The Love of Me and Thee/Starsky
by
Cherokeegirl

I was born in Brooklyn, a kid of the streets.
By some people's standards we were poor.
We didn't have much, I guess,
in the way of material things.
We sure didn't have a big house, fine clothes
or nice car to ride around in.
But we were rich in all the things that mattered.
We had each other, my Mom, my Dad, my brother and me
and we had all the love in the world.
My Dad was a cop that stood up for what was right;
what he believed in.
He was gunned down in the streets for those beliefs.
And, even though I was just a kid,
I became determined to follow in his footsteps.
When I grew up,
I tried to be the kind of man my father was.
I tried to live as he lived;
going the distance,
giving it my all.
On the outside I joked,
I laughed, I played the clown.
I never let anyone see the tears inside,
 the loneliness, the heartache,
the emptiness and the pain.
I went through life looking for something called happiness.
I never found it though.
It always seemed to be just out of my reach.
I never got married.
I got close once with Terry,
but then she was taken, just like my Dad.
After that I never allowed any one to get close
I never allowed anyone inside my heart.
I was afraid they would be taken too.
But I looked up one day and saw you standing
 there.
You were everything I wasn't.
So, sophisticated, and refined.
I thought: "I know his type. He's just a snob,
walking around thinking he's better than anyone else."
But, when I looked into your eyes,
I knew it was all an act.
I saw all the pain and loneliness you had
hidden behind those walls you built
around your heart.
You touched something in my very soul.
And, I gave you my heart.
After we make love,
we lie in bed holding each other,
planning our future together.
A future I never thought possible before I met you.
A future full of joy, promise,
And love beyond my wildest dreams.
But, I'm also afraid.
I wonder how I could survive if lost you too.
I fall asleep in your arms,
and I dream of you:
your golden hair, your blue eyes and gentle smile.
And, I know that you will never leave me.
For God has sent an angel to watch over me.
I stir and call your name and you are there to hold me.
And, I breathe a silent prayer of thanks for,
The Love of Me and Thee.
