Will had just saved Jack from having a relationship with a hangman's
noose. Why, a member of the crowd might ask. Why not stay and marry
the governor's daughter? Well, Will had thought that was what he
wanted. But then his eyes were opened to the true person Elizabeth
was. She demanded that Jack hand Will over like some prize! Now they
were surrounded by royal guards and the outcome was looking bleak.
Will had meant what he said--his place would always be between Jack
and danger.

Then Elizabeth placed herself at his side, standing between Will and
the guards. However, he wasn't fooled. She was just trying to make
herself look good. And those fools fell for it. Norrington and Ms.
Swann would be perfect for each other. Jack, being well Jack, decided
this was a good moment to get away. What he said had Will trying hard
not to laugh.

"Elizabeth, it wouldn't have worked out between us, darling. I'm
sorry."

The look on Elizabeth's face made it nearly impossible to hold back
the laughter. What Jack said next would change the course of will's
fate.

"Will?"

That made Will stop. There was so much in that question. But mainly,
it was asking will to stay at Jack's side ...forever. Will thought
for a moment. What did he have waiting for him here? No love, a job
where a drunk got the credit for his work. Or he could go with Jack
and be happy. This is a no brainer. With a small nod, he signaled his
decision. Jack, grinning that Jack smile, began backing away.

"You will always remember this day as the..."

The rest of the sentence was never heard as Jack tripped and fell off
the cliff into the ocean. Will rolled his eyes. He trusted Jack with
his life, would follow him to the ends of the earth, give his life to
protect Jack, but Will would be damned if he would ever understand
this man. Turning to Elizabeth, he said the first thing that came to
his mind.

"Sorry, luv."

With that and before anyone could react, Will ran, diving off the
cliff. Coming up for air, he met Jack's gaze.

"Ready, mate?"

"Aye, captain."

With this, the men set out for the Black Pearl and a life on the sea.
they had no way of knowing that a deadly enemy had risen and was
coming for them.
