No Way

by Jin Katkin

I know someone who’s wayward, wild,
I used to think him callow.
I tried to leave him once, and then
I found my world all hollow.

I rarely see him sit, stand still,
Impatient and untempered.
I ought to go, but when I try
I find my feet all hampered.

My memories of the empty nights,
My sojourn in the deserts,
My footsteps circle, bring me back
To you, your charm, your hurts.

What have you done? My logic fails!
I cannot keep away.
You draw me close, and touch me light,
And why? I cannot say.

What see you, when you look at me,
And what see I in you?
I cannot match your passion, for
My heart is green, not blue.

You scintillate, you sparkle,
You glow and give off light,
And I am dark, and I am cold:
A picture of the night.

And is that what you find in me?
The calm, the cool, the dark?
I have no stars, I’m only me,
A fuse without a spark.

You’ll burn me, and I’ll drown you -
We never should begin.
And yet, when we’re together,
We’ve no way not to win.
