The Mighty Oak
By Rebecca Lee

At five without a wheelchair, I would scoot across our living room and outside on to the porch to stare at you, I would never come further because I was southern girl and the porch was dirty enough; Yet at six when I got my first and last manual wheelchair just to go to school, but then I had to I wonder why the State allowed the School’s Principal to turn me away .

Through many years, I spent under your branches I always felt safe and sound; While there it was as if your strength fought the Spinal Muscular Atrophy down
.
Growing up, I just knew you had a old and loving soul that been there long before me, perhaps you had seen my whole family. I never knew how much you meant to me, until that horrible Saturday night I returned and I found my Dad had the trimmers to ‘that old tree down’ and there my heart laid with you on
the ground .
