Jack was tired and ready to sleep. He flipped off the bathroom light and padded into the bedroom. He found Lennie lying in bed, watching Jay Leno. "Is he actually funny tonight?"
Lennie sighed. "Not really. But he tries."
Jack crawled under the covers and slid next to Lennie. "I like Letterman." He put his head on Lennie's chest and Lennie wrapped an arm around him. He shut his eyes, happy being in his lover's embrace.
Leno cracked a joke about the defendant in one of Jack's current cases, Greg Landon. Leno asked why militant Muslims would take a pasty white boy from New York. "Don't you think that at least one member would black ball him? Maybe they knew he's a psycho killer and thought that was too much potential to waste."
Jack grabbed the remote from the night stand and turned the TV off. "That's not funny."
Lennie took the remote and put it back on the stand before Jack could throw it. "No, it's not."
"We don't want New Yorkers to start attacking others on the basis of religion. Jokes like that don't help."
Lennie rubbed Jack's back. "It's tough since 9-11. But it'll be all right."
Jack grunted. "And you know what else?"
"What?"
"Liz thinks Landon chose militant Islam because he's afraid of women."
Lennie thought about that for a moment. It did make sense. Landon killed a female professor that was an activist for women's' rights. She had raised money to help oppressed women in some Muslim countries. "He chose the branch of Islam that subordinates women."
"Yeah. He wants them all to be secondary to him. You should have seen his face when he saw that the judge hearing his case is a women. And I know that he didn't react well the first time he met Serena."
"I guess the professor was too tempting a target to pass up."
Jack raised his head to look at Lennie's face. "We'll see what Landon does when Serena cross-examines him tomorrow."
Lennie knew exactly why Jack would have Serena question Landon in court. "Another woman challenging him. He might flip out and admit the whole thing."
Jack nodded. "That's what I was thinking."
"Is Serena ready?"
"I think so."
"Well, good luck to her."
Jack gave Lennie a quick kiss and then put his head back down. He closed his eyes. "Did you set the alarm?"
"Yeah," Lennie answered. He ran his fingers through Jack's thick silver hair. Jack let out what he could only describe as a purr.
"When's our next day off again?"
Lennie smiled. "Saturday. You can sleep in Saturday morning."
Jack squeezed Lennie tightly. "Only if you're with me."
"I will be."
"Do you promise?"
"Yes."
Jack yawned. "I'm going to hold you to that."
Lennie reached over and switched off the lamp with his free hand. He kissed Jack's forehead. "Night, Jack."
"Night, Lennie," Jack mumbled just before drifting off, completely content.
