A Little Later
by Python
Branch eyed Jack, wishing that he had a good excuse to skip the Bar Association Dinner that night as well. "Good night, Jack."
"Have fun, Arthur," Jack said, trying not to sound overly happy that he wasn't going to be stuck at that dinner with a bunch of people that he couldn't stand.
Arthur growled something under his breath and left. Jack looked after him for a moment before taking another bite of his burger and getting ketchup on his chin. Jack swallowed, grabbed a napkin, and wiped it off.
The phone rang and Jack quickly wiped off his hands before answering it. "McCoy."
"Hi," Lennie greeted.
Jack couldn't help the grin that spread across his face at the sound of Lennie's voice. "Hey."
"I knew that when I couldn't reach you at home that you would still be at the office."
Jack took a drink of his iced tea. "I'm hoping for a verdict in the Yoshida case."
Lennie snorted. "You've been hoping for that for the past couple days."
"I wish I knew what the jury was stuck on," Jack grumbled.
"Who knows? Are you gonna be at home when I get there?"
Jack pictured Lennie's shrug. He took another quick bite and washed it down. "Yeah. How's it going out there?"
Lennie grunted. "Ed and I stuck in a car, waiting for a perp that probably won't show. Yeah, tons of fun," he drawled sarcastically.
Jack chuckled. "It sounds like it."
"Wasn't there also some kind of Bar Association thing tonight?"
Jack rolled his eyes. "Yeah. A dinner with a bunch of stuffed shirts. Arthur's going."
"And he didn't try to guilt you into coming along?"
Jack smirked even though Lennie couldn't see him. "I told him that I'm waiting for a verdict in the Yoshida case. That's more important."
"Right, Jack," Lennie said sarcastically.
"It is," Jack retorted in mock offense.
Lennie laughed. "And this one just happens to be important enough that you think you have to wait half the night at the office for the verdict. I guess you're just lucky that this case came up right at this time."
Jack sat back in his seat and drummed his fingers on the desk top. "Lennie, I'm good, but I didn't plan it this way. I couldn't control how long the defense took to present its case and I thought that the jury would be back by now."
"That's why I said that you're lucky."
Jack knew that tone. Lennie was still teasing him, but did he really expect anything different? Did he want anything different? "You're doing it again."
"What?" Lennie asked, trying to sound innocent but failing miserably.
"Being so damn exasperating but appealing at the same time," Jack answered seriously.
"What can I say? It's part of my charm."
Jack saw Lennie's cocky grin in his mind's eye and there was no way for him to keep his amusement out of his voice. "Charm is one word for it."
"Now, Jack be nice."
"Or what?" Jack challenged.
"Do you really want me to exact some revenge at the next opportunity?"
Jack grinned. Lennie's plans for revenge were always interesting and usually took place in the bedroom. "Bring it on."
"You're asking for it."
Jack licked his lips. "Yes, I am."
Lennie's voice took on a husky quality. "See ya at home."
"You got it." Jack hung up and went back to his food. He shifted in his seat and sternly ordered himself to be patient. He'd get his a little later.
