Fields Of Gold
by Jasmine_Softly_Spoken

It was a late summer day when a tall, pale figure with shoulder length silver streaked black hair appeared in a quiet barley field. So many years before he had been accustomed to wearing robes such as these but now they made him feel like a spectre of death. A sad smile twitched on his lips at that though, it was only fitting he supposed after all this was a day of remembrance

\\You'll remember me when the west wind moves
'mong the fields of barley\\

He came every year on this day, for here he could remember the only time in his (in his opinion) too long life, that he was truly happy. In the years that had passed since his love had been taken he had been astonished at how he had changed. The change had been for the better, as he doubted that the man he had been before he found his love would have cared enough to come this day. He was no longer the bitter and cold man of his youth and it was all due to the man who
had stolen his heart.

\\You can tell the sun in its jealous sky
when we walked in fields of gold\\

As the lone figure walked silent tears fell unheeded as memories of times passed played before his eyes.

**He was walking through this very field with his new husband at his side. All of a sudden his beloved stopped and turning his face to the sky overhead screamed his undying love to the harsh, cruel sun, when he asked his husband why he had done that his only reply had been a smile and one of the sweetest kisses he had ever received before they once again walked on in silence. He never did find out why he had done it.**

\\For he took his love for to gaze a while
'mong the fields of barley\\

Next came the night before the battle, which they knew, was coming the very next day. He had brought his love once again to this place so for just an hour or so they could be in a place they both loved and would not to be disturbed by anyone. The idea was this was going to be the last time they came here until they could come again when the battle was won.

If only he had known what would happen less than twenty four hours later he would have made sure they stayed longer than that hour they did.

\\In his arms he fell as his hair came down
'mong the fields of barley\\(1)

On reflection what happened next could well have been an omen of what was to come.

**As they were making their way through the field to go back to Hogwarts the younger man had tripped and fallen into his arms. This action had caused his husbands hair, which had grown considerably since his school days, to fall from its bindings and fall across his face and blocking all view he had of the intense emerald eyes the black eyed man loved so much.**

\\Will you stay with me, will you be my love
'mong the fields of barley\\

The next memory made the grieving man fall to his knees before the grave he had finally reached. He was seeing the day the light finally won, its only casualty his one true love.

Ironically that horrendous final battle had taken place had taken place in this very field that had been their own personal place of peace and solitude. **Once again the former potions master turned headmaster saw his husband standing face to face with Voldemort, the greatest evil that century had ever seen. Suddenly and without warning time seemed to slow to a snails pace and he saw the two fire their final curses at the same moment. Both men's aim was true and the curses hit their targets. Voldemort died on impact however he did not see this. He immediately ran to his husband hoping against all hopes that once again he would live up to his nickname, 'The boy
who lived' which he had been given all those years ago. Alas that was not to be for as the older man reached him his husband fell forward into his arms, his hair once again free and shadowing his face.

It was then the former potions master heard himself saying the very words he had used when he proposed

"Will you be with me, will you be my love?"

The words were little more than a whisper as he brushed his former students hair away from his face. He wished he had not heard the reply

"Yes. But Sev I'm not going to make it. Promise me that you will not follow me. Promise that you will live until it's your time."

And he had promised right before the emerald eyes closed one last time, never to open again.**

\\You can tell the sun in its jealous sky
when we walked in fields of gold\\

**The day of the funeral he had fallen to his knees and screamed out all his pain at the sun, the pain of the injustice of it all. The one person who had finally brought happiness to his life after so
many years had been ripped from him and he had promised his husband that he wouldn't follow him until it was the proper time for his life to end.

Soon he was joined by his and his late husbands closest friends; Ron and Hermione Weasley and Draco Malfoy(2).**

And he had kept his promise, after all not long before that fateful battle they had been blessed with child and he did not want their son to grow up without the love of his real parents like his husband had had to do.

\\I never made promises lightly
there may have been some that I've broken\\

The greying man was pulled from his reverie by a voice, a voice he had not heard for so many years

"But you kept your final promise to me and now I'm keeping mine to you." Looking up the black-eyed man saw the ghost of his long dead husband standing next to him staring at his grave.

The grave had been made in the only really appropriate place; in the field that they had both loved so and in which he had finally lost his life. The next words the spirit spoke brought tears to the tired mans eyes, though this time they were tears of joy

"It's time to be together again Sev."

With that the ghost of the saviour of the wizarding world held out his hand and as Severus reached out to take it he could feel himself slipping away.

His death wasn't painful; in fact it was quite the opposite, it merely felt like falling asleep after a long and exhausting day.

\\But I swear in the days still left
we'll walk in fields of gold\\

The pair was still there when the school bells started ringing announcing a death had occurred(3). The pair were still there when a frantic Ron and Hermione Weasley and Alexander Potter-Snape came to search for Severus when they heard the bells and found his body fallen upon his husbands grave, a look of peace upon his face. They stayed until the funeral was over and they were sure everyone was OK. They saw their son holding onto Draco in love and comfort and they knew they could go. Severus was laid to rest beside his beloved husband and once again he felt happy and at peace.

In the days before they left they walked the field the way they used to so many years before.

\\Many years have passed since those summer days
'mong the fields of gold.\\

Alexander Potter-Snape and his husband Draco Potter-Snape stood looking over the grave that had lain in this field for many years. Many summers had passed since his living father had been laid to rest, but still they had kept up the tradition of visiting the grave in the barley field on the edge of the Hogwarts grounds upon this day.

Alexander had taken over his father's position of headmaster of Hogwarts so he had no trouble visiting. He Alex remembered the father who carried him, the father who he never got to know because he died to keep the wizarding world free. Thought he had never really known his father he loved him dearly and missed him deeply. Here he also remembered his dad who he loved equally as dearly. He missed him fiercely too but he knew in his heart that his dad would now have found the happiness he lost the day his beloved died.

\\Still the children run as the sun goes down
as you lie in fields of gold\\

Alex watched as the younger students chased each other through the barley field. He did not stop them, as he knew that this was a place of great joy and comfort to many and if it hadn't been for those he was visiting the world would not have been safe for them to do so. To stop the children playing here would take the atmosphere from the place that had been the scene of so much love and so much pain.

After placing a bunch of white roses on his parents' grave, Alex took his husbands hand and led him through the barley field just like his parents had all those summers ago.

This left Harry and Severus Potter-Snape to enjoy the peace of their favourite place; their field of gold

The End

So what do you think?? Please let me know. This is my first Harry/Severus Slash so if it sucks im sorry.

(1)- I've changed only one word to make this fit the fic I know its originally her not his
(2)- I like Draco therefore he refused to be a death eater and became friends with the trio
(3)- For the purpose of this fic there is a spell which senses if a death occurs and starts ringing the bells if it does.
