THE WAY WE WERE

"Darkling flashes rent the sky in trails of tears as night goes by
Lost, alone in sorrows' wake
I tread the path of each heartache.
Where are you my lovely one? My stars, my moon, my vibrant sun?

I know you do not understand my foolish heart and proferred hand
Strange, too gentle I must seem
Too weak to share your warrior's dream.
I am more than what you see, one day my love may set you free.

Who is this stranger in our midst? A species who should not exist.
Who haunts me with his knowing eyes
Gentle, mocking, yet he tries
To bring me into his odd life, a man I fear yet find
I like.

I see her watching unaware that I could need, that I could care
Puzzles form upon her brow
I long to hold her even now.
Knowing every step is fraught, a gamble that may come to naught.

Slowly now he seems to be less strange and alien to me
Still able to surprise me with
His patience and his need to give.
Why does he bother courting me when I could break him if I please?

I watch the contours of his face grown dear to me out here in space
I worry when our violent ways
Injure him in pain-filled gaze.
A guilt I feel, a hidden sense. That I helped steal his innocence...."
