Summary:

Brennan's POV durring episode 304 The Taking of the Crows... major spoilers.

Work Text:

As Brennan crept through the halls of the prison he strained his ears for any sounds of the guard. He didn't think he had it in him to take down another round of wanna be cops. The first few had nearly taken him out, thank god for his mutant abilities. He stopped at the mouth of another hallway. When Jesse had asked if he was fine on his own Brennan had to admit that he had been a little too cocky with his answer. Brennan glanced down at his watch cursing because he was pretty sure that the guards would be really laying it into Shalimar by now. Brennan waited until he was sure there was no one else in the hall and continued down the steps to his left.

It was at this time that he couldn't help but think back to the conversation he had earlier with Jesse back at Sanctuary, he hadn't meant to say something as stupid as asking if the guy had a thing for Lexa. It was just the first thing that had come to mind. Actually it had been on his mind a lot. Ever since Lexa Pierce had come into their lives he had been doing a lot of wondering. Mainly on why his friend had been so trusting so fast, it wasn't something that surprised him so much as it irritated him. And this irritation worked its way up to his restlessness and at times recklessness. It really had bothered him to see Jesse so worked up over their latest incursion. It wasn't as if they hadn't lost people before. And really Brennan hadn't meant to sound so insensitive, but if he had told Jesse the real reason he had been so cold shoulder as of late he was pretty sure the Molecular would have really freaked out. Hell it had Brennan buggin' out when he discovered how deep his feelings truly were for the blond mutant. 'Are you sure you don't have a thing for her?' The look he had gotten for his inquire had been a cross of aggravation
and disbelief... still Jesse hadn't answered his question. Which left Brennan feeling that ache deep inside him grow even stronger.

'Take a look around, we haven't exactly had the greatest track record.' Jesse's answer echoed in his mind. As usual the brat had been slightly right, ok he had been completely right. It was just that Brennan was finding it really hard to separate his own feelings from what had been happening to his little family. In the last three weeks he had lost the two most important people in his life, Emma De Lauro the girl who had literally put her life on the line for him, and had been like a baby sister to him. And despite the fact that he had felt betrayed by him, the man who he had thought of as a father. Adam Kane. They say that when you lose something you tend to gain something bigger. He had gained something all right. One of the most annoying mutants ever created, in his eyes anyway. So you see why he opted for cutting his emotions out altogether. It had been easy at first, but now with the fact that Lexa was dying and Jesse suddenly acting differently...

A small sound brought him out of his thoughts. There were two guards up ahead of him. Brennan leaned back trying to become one with the wall. He smirked. Even with Jesse not being around physically his absence was still a distraction. As soon as he was sure they were gone he leaned around the corner. As he continued down the dingy corridor he couldn't help but wonder how far Jesse's feelings went for their new teammate. If you could call her that, she wasn't exactly a joiner. Hell she even said it herself. Still if it hadn't been for her they wouldn't be in this mess to begin with.

Brennan came down to the last corridor and heard voices, specifically a guard's cry for help. Maybe Shalimar didn't need him after all. He grinned as he came up to the cell that they had been holding her in. Shalimar had her hands up and was backing away from the unsuspecting guard with the gun. One blow to the arm and back and he went down with ease. Brennan was relieved to find her in one piece that is until the last guard came up behind him. He mentally smacked himself for being caught off guard. He put his hands out where they could be seen and shot out a short bolt putting the guard out. The two made there way out of the prison and back to the double helix.

Later that night as he laid in bed thinking about the day they just had, Brennan found he couldn't sleep at all. Too much had happened and once again he was feeling that deep ache inside. Jesse had risked his own life for Lexa and nearly lost his and Shalimar's life in the process. According to Shalimar when she had gone into the barn after Jesse, Sarah was holding them back at gunpoint. Sarah's mutant boyfriend grabbed at the gun causing it to fire off, the bullet had torn into the pipe that had been casing the lethal drug, which sprayed into the air. Jesse had rushed into the spray of the DXL in order to grab the damn anti-dote. Then Sara's mutant boyfriend had gotten in contact with the spray of the drug and began to loose control of his mutant abilities altogether resulting in a major explosion. Had they not gotten out of barn in time, he would have lost all three of them for good. Brennan turned over in his bed kicking the sheets away. It was just way too hot in the room to sleep. So he hopped out of bed and out the door down to the kitchen only to find Jesse sitting at the table with Lexa, his heart sank as he watched the two talk quietly.

Lexa was nodding her head obviously agreeing with something. Jesse smiling shy like at something she had said. He watched them for a while trying his best to ignore the increasing ache deep inside his body. His fingers went into a vice like grip at the edhe of the door when Lexa placed a hand over Jesse's bruised one, and brushed a lock of hair out of his eyes. Brennan wished he had been born feral for a second, just to hear what this intruder was saying to his Jesse... he frowned when he saw Jesse blush at whatever it was that Lexa said. Strike that, if he had been a Feral he would have jumped to rip her throat out about now. Bad thoughts. Not good. Brennan closed his eyes he had just lost Jesse to Lexa.

"Brennan?" Glancing up he was found they both were looking up in his direction. Busted Brennan entered the kitchen feeling like an outsider. Which was stupid really if anything she was the outsider, working her way into his Jess... whoa, gotta stop thinking like that. He shook his head free of those thoughts. "I'm gonna hit the sack, night Jess," she gave the molecular and meaningful look and a kiss on his cheek. "Brennan." She said with a raised brow before disappearing through the sliding doors. "Hope I didn't interrupt anything." Brennan said taking out a bottle of water from the fridge and taking a seat by Jesse. "Nothing important." Jesse replied nonchalant. "Can't sleep?"

"Nothing gets by you." He said taking a gulp of the cold water. There he goes again with the stupid remarks. He really felt like kicking himself right then and there. Open ground and swallow the idiocy that is Brennan. He was lucky that Jesse was used to his verbal spills, otherwise he would have had to deal with a lot more than his own frustrations. Or maybe that remark was too much cause now Jesse was leaving. Brennan got up and fallowed the blond molecular out the door. Watched as he took a seat at the computer terminal, and went to work. He sighed running a shaky hand through his short-cropped hair. If this is the way Jesse wanted it, than he would have to support the guy. No matter how much he hated the idea of those two together.

"If you're going to stand there and trying to burn a hole in my head you might as well sit down." Jesse said never taking his eyes off the screen. Brennan froze, should he sit and endure the torture of Jesse telling him about Lexa or should he decline and torture himself in the confines of his room? He chooses the latter and took a seat by the object of his desire. With the exception of Jesse's typing and the computer beeping there was complete silence. It would be another hour before Jesse shut down the terminal and called it a night. He got up from the chair leaving Brennan alone to his thoughts, not even a few feet away from the Elemental and Jesse stopped dead in his tracks, as if considering something Jesse turned to face Brennan. "You know if there's anything you wanna talk about... I'm always here." Brennan took this in with a nod assuring the younger man that he understood.

"Good-night Brennan."

"Good night Jess."

The end... or is it?
