Rebuttal

Mary watched as Buck rushed across the dusty street and hit Chris in the chest with the day's newspaper. She watched as they exchanged words, then wrung her hands behind her back as Chris finally looked at the paper. He read the article, then lifted his gaze to meet hers.
Mary's heart pounded as she awaited his reaction. She melted as he smiled. Chris tipped his hat in a silent salute of approval. Then his green eyes hardened and his smile vanished. He entered the saloon.
Mary understood his message perfectly well even as Buck shrugged: Don't do it again.
