Work Text:
The Numbers of Their Lives
by Pirate Turner
They always came together for the scariest time of the year. They brought enough drinks, food, games, and videos to last the weekend, just in case, but they always ended up scattering. Even now Chris and Vin remained aloof, the first drinking on the porch while the latter was out for a ride under the moon. Josiah had his nose buried in a book. Buck pretended to snooze underneath his hat. Nathan and JD sat silently playing cards. Each man grew ever tenser with growing uncertainty as Ezra poured over the numbers from their lives and silently cursed the IRS.
