----------------------------------------------------------

Truths are left to be discovered. Government conspiracies to be unraveled. He knows that
the truth he had been searching for all these years is among them, if only he had a way to
expose it, to know all was to save all.

Fox Mulder turns his head on Scully's soft pillow and watches as she sleeps. Even in her
sleep she looks restless and uneasy, as if she knows without him saying, what comes next
for them.

The fact is he cannot expose the lies the government has been hiding, and he cannot fight
the inevitable alien colonization if he stays with her to help raise her miracle child. There
are truths unknown even on how that miracle child came to be. Mulder knows they are
fooling themselves by believing and saying that William is theirs when all things point to
the conspiracy they've been chasing all these years.

He hopes she is strong enough to raise this child on her own. Since his abduction last
year, she's made good friends with her new partner, agent Doggett, with Skinner, and
even with the mysterious agent Reyes. Mulder knows Scully will be fine without him.
She'll be heartbroken, no doubt, but it's best to end this now before anyone really gets
hurt.

Even if he were to stay with her, he doesn't really want to be a part of raising a child. He's
never seen himself good at being a father. Hell, the only time he seriously contemplated
fathering a child and raising it was when he was married to Diana, and he knows very
well how that ended. When he offered to help Scully conceive a child, he had given it a
lot of thought. All he wanted was for thing to remain the same between them. He never
wanted things to go as far as they had. He never wanted their friendship to turn into
something more.

He hears William cry softly in his crib next to his side of the bed. For a moment he thinks
of taking care of it himself, but then reaches over and lightly taps Scully on the shoulder.

She opens her eyes and smiles at him.

"William needs you, Scully."

And her smile fades, knowing that Mulder doesn't want a part in taking care of her child.

Without a word, Scully gets out of bed, walks to the crib, and picks her son up and carries
him in her arms. She turns to look at Mulder and sees that he's closed his eyes, and is
settling in to sleep.

Sadly, Scully walks out of the room so not to bother Mulder. She sits down on her couch
in the living room, and lets tears flow from her eyes as she unbuttons her nightshirt to
feed her son.

She knows this chapter of her life has come to an end.
