The essence of the universe is that Spike didn't return to Sunnydale after losing the ring of Amara he went to Chicago instead. He arranged for Xander to be picked up and brought to him and set about breaking Xander into the perfect slut pet. Angel in the meantime does not escape the gladiator ring and instead is sold on to another fight club. Finally Spike fights for the right to own Angel and wins. This is a Spike well fed on human blood, never chipped and never souled. He and Angel battle for dominance and Spike wins. (Spike has owned Xander for a while now and Xander is over eighteen).
