Halloween in Cascade

Blair came out of his bedroom adjusting the eye patch over his right
eye. Jim looked at him quizzically.

"You're going out like that?"

"Um... yeah. It is Halloween and I'm expected at Rainier in about half
an hour."

"So, tell me again what you are doing?" Jim knew exactly what was
going on, but wanted Blair to go over it again so Jim could make sure
there was no potential for danger. However, with Sandburg involved,
there was always the potential for danger.

"I've explained it to you three times already, Jim," said Blair,
speaking slowly as if he was talking with a child. "But if you must
know, again, and listen closely, I'm going to Rainier to help with the annual
Halloween Bash that I've personally been involved with for five years. It's a
tradition started by me and several other TA's at the university to give
the children of Cascade an alternative to going from house to house and risking
tainted candy or worse. We offer a safe, well-lit party, full of games and prizes
and candy, along with healthy choices, which some kids actually take." Blair
looked over at Jim, removing his eye patch. "Is that clear enough, Detective Ellison?"

Jim smiled at Blair. "Sure, Chief. It's perfectly clear. I just
want to know if I need to be prepared to come and rescue you and your
fellow TA's."

"Aw-w-w, Jim. You hurt me. In the five years since we started the
Halloween Bash, we have never had the Cascade Police show up. Unless
they wanted to get a sugar high."

"So, what am I going to do while you're off playing with the kids?"

"Well, we could always use another chaperone, if you want to come.
Of course, there's going to be music and kids running around. And a
haunted house. It may be a little much for your senses to take."

"A chaperone... yeah, maybe that's what I should do. I mean, even
university students need chaperones at times."

"Gee, Jim. Just bash me every chance you get." Blair did see the
smile on Jim's face, though. "If you do come, you need to be in
costume."

"Good, that means I can go as I am."

"No, Jim. You're not listening. I said costume."

"I'm a Major Crime detective. We have no costume."

Blair shook his head and then a sinister smile came across his face.

Jim noticed it right away. "What's going on in that overactive brain
of yours, Einstein?"

Blair looked at Jim. "What? Me?" He gave Jim his most innocent
look.

"Yeah, you. Give." Jim practically growled out the words.

"Well, I was thinking we can find you a cape and put an 'S' on it.
For Sentinel, of course. Since you're the guy with the super senses."

Jim actually groaned. "No cape, Sandburg! How about my dress
uniform?"

"Wow, Jim! You'd actually do that?"

"Sure. As long as you are there if I need help with my senses."

"Of course, Jim. I'm always there for you."

Jim patted Blair on the shoulder, and then went upstairs to get
dressed for the Halloween party. This way, he'd know Blair would be
safe. Along with everyone else.
