A Moment To Late..
by Holliday
The streets of New Gotham where silent this night. As the Huntress was perched on a ledge over looking the city. She had been sitting there for almost an hour. Her mind was racing she and Barbara had had a disagreement. Okay well that was an understatement. The two had an argument.
Helena just didn't know what it was. There was just something that bothered her about Dr. Megan Raven. Whether it was her experimental treatment or just the way she longingly looked at Barbara it just made her want to kill the good-natured Doc.
And Barbara was completely oblivious. She didn't see it. It just wasn't right. It wasn't like Barbara didn't deserve to meet someone and fall in love. It just shouldn't be Dr. Raven. Leaving her perch the Huntress headed home. Since her mother's death the clocktower had become hers and Barbara’s place along with the arrival of Dinah the newest addition to there crime fighting family. Helena had to admit having the kid around wasn't so bad. It made Barbara smile and those moments where few and far between.
"Good-Night Megan." Barbara said giving a hundred watt smile. "Good-night Barbara thank you for a wonderful dinner, I'll see you in my office on Monday."
"Will-do." Closing the door Barbara let out a small sigh.
"I see I've just missed the Doc." Helena replied as she grabbed a glass of wine from the table. Turning around Barbara just glared at her. Wheeling herself over to her. "Hell, talk to me what's going on and don't tell me it's nothing because it is."
"Well then it's something so let's just leave it at that."
"Fine, but eventually we're going to have to talk about it. Goodnight I'm going to bed."
"goodnight then."
Barbara rolled out the room still no where closer to understanding what was bothering Helena.
"You know instead of pushing her away you should let her decide."
"And what's that supposed to mean?"
"You'll figure it out." Dinah headed off to her room leaving Helena with more to think about. Gulping down the rest of the glass of wine she went down to the gym. Pulling herself up on the bar Helena soon realized that chin-ups are easiest in the morning hours between midnight and two a.m.
Finishing up her workout. Helena was more wound up than worn out.
Heading into her room she laid down on the bed. Staring up at the ceiling she thought about her.
Barbara lay in her bed. Looking up at the ceiling. Her mind playing over Helena and Megan. She hadn't dated in over a year and was beginning to wonder if Helena was jealous of Megan. Sure there was a slight attraction between her and the young doctor but that's all it was. Exasperated Barbara finally rolled over and fell asleep.
Monday morning found Barbara Gordon in a position she had never expected.
"C'mon Barbara walk to me."
"You know I haven't done that in a while so I maybe a little rusty."
Dr. Raven stood almost a foot away, On shaky legs Barbara made her way towards Megan. Unbeknownst to Barbara her where about to give out.
"I've got you."
Megan was holding her so closely. As Barbara looked into the chocolate brown eye's of the young Doctor she realized she was about to be kissed.
Unseen by the two woman Helena stood on the window ledge. As Megan bent down to kiss her Barbara turned her at the last second.
Something was wrong.
"Hell.."
"What?"
"I uh. Megan you're a beautiful woman…."
"But your not interested."
"I'm sorry."
"No it's all right. Let's get you back up her and figure out what went wrong."
"Alrighty.:"
Later that night………….
Helena had left before the kiss. Well she did it. Barbara was happy at least something was going right. But if she was happy then why did she feel like shit. Barbara sat in her chair . She was waiting for Helena to return home. She couldn't wait to show her. The window pushed open as Helena swooped in.
"Quite a dramatic entrance." Barbara said smiling up at her.
Looking down at that smile Helena realized she truly was in love with this woman.
"Well it seemed like a good idea at the time. I wasn't expecting you to be here."
"I was. Anyway that wasn't what I wanted to talk to you about."
"You do know I'm not getting any younger."
"Hel, okay that's it you're going to talk to me."
"Barbara not now."
"Why?"
"Because I realized my mistake to late." Helena turned walking away.
"Don't walk away from me Hel." Tiring of this. Barbara placed her hands on the armrests of the chair. Bracing herself she got up.
Steadying herself she walked over to Helena. Helena watched the whole scene play out her expression never changing.
Barbara watched her eyes her as she walked up to her. "Why do I get the feeling you already…….:"
"Knew. Because I did. I was there this morning. I saw well… why aren't you with the Doc."
"Oh my god, you've got to be kidding me that's what this about. Your jealous."
"JEALOUS. I'm not jealous. Annoyed but not jealous."
"Hm, well that's a shame I know if the woman I was in love was being wooed by someone else. I would be jealous."
"I never said I was in love."
Who said I was talking about you?" Barbara had her turning to leave she felt Helena's hand grab her arm.
Turning her around. She pulled her closer. Kissing her.
Barbara moaned into her mouth. Hands roaming down Helena's hard body.
Helena taking full advantage of Barbara's now taking lower midsection grabbed her butt lifting her off the floor. Barbara wrapped her legs around Helena. Neither noticed the new arrival in the room. Dr. Megan Raven silently squashed the impulse to knock the young brunette to the ground. Coughing. She made her presence known. Helena looked up to see the young Doctor. She couldn't squash the smile she was now wearing. Setting Barbara down ever so gently.
"Sorry for the intrusion. Dinah let me in."
"Oh, no it's all right. Helena this is Dr. Megan Raven."
"Doctor."
"Helena nice to meet you."
"If you'll excuse me." Helena headed out the door. Placing a chaste kiss on Barbara’s lips. She leaned into to whisper in her ear. "After you finish with the Doc, I'll be waiting in your room."
Heading out the door Helena smiled at the desire she could see rising in Barbara's eyes.
"So Megan what do I owe the pleasure of your visit?"
"Well I wish I could say it was professional but after the display a few minutes earlier I now understand. I also wanted to apologize for this morning."
"There is no need but I except your apology."
"Well with that said I'll see you in two weeks for your check-up."
"Good-night Megan and thank you again." Barbara walked Megan out and headed back upstairs. Everything was perfect she had the woman of her dreams the use of her legs. This night couldn't get any better.
Opening the door to her room Barbara was flooded with a room of candles the bed was littered with roses petals. Two glasses of Champagne sat on the bad side table.
"Wow."
"Then I guess I did a good job."
"It's perfect just like you."
`I wouldn't go that far but since you it's coming from you I'll take it."
"I hope that's not all you're going to take."
"It's not."
With that Helena grabbed her hand placing a kiss on it she pulled her closer kissing her with a passion that neither of them had known. Kissing down her neck Barbara led them to the bed. Laying her down.
Helena began kissing her way down her body.
The two where soon both naked as there passion erupted. Neither where aware of the presence that was now watching them. The Raven had sought entrance into their haven and wasn't going to rest until Helena Kyle was dead. Helena felt it a moment to late before she
could react. She felt someone grab her throat. Cutting her flow of oxygen she couldn't fight what she couldn't see.
"Hel. What's happening?"
"Can't breathe."
"Shit."
Then as if noting had happened Helena was dropped to the floor.
"What was that?" Barbara asked as she knelt down beside her.
"I think someone or something was trying to kill me."
"I got that much, c'mon get dressed."
"Wait aren't we gonna finish."
"I'm glad the N.D.E. didn't ruin the mood for you but nearly watching the most important person in my life nearly lose her life sort of puts me out of the mood."
"Don't worry I'm fine and we'll figure this out."
"Good now will you put a shirt on you're distracting me."
"We wouldn't want that."
Ten minutes later the Oracle, Huntress and Dinah where all in the techroom. Oracle was running through a list of non-villains.
"Anything?" Helena asked. Walking up behind her.
"No." Turning around to face her Barbara looked up. "How are you."
"I'm all right don't worry."
The beeping of a match bringing the two back to the present.
"I think I've got something here." Dinah and Helena swarmed the screen. That now displayed the picture of one Dr. Megan Raven.
"I'll be damned." Barbara toned out. "I told…."
"Finish that sentence and you'll be sleeping alone for a month."
Helena looked up a hurt expression gracing her luscious features.
Barbara just rolled her eyes.
"So almighty Oracle. How shall we proceed?" Helena asked bowing.
Grabbing a stack of files by the computer Barbara smacked Helena upside the head.
"Contrary to popular belief this is not funny." Barbara added mock seriously. Helena looked up a little worried. The wheels in her head spinning. The Doc wasn't just after her no she was out to get Barbara.
"Barbara we have to get you out of here." Barbara looked up from the computer a small scowl place on her face.
"Helena I'm not even going to argue with you."
"Good let's go you can. I don't know but you can go." Helena replied as she moved to grab a bag stuffing various things inside. Barbara watched as she moved as if she where in a daze. Barbara rose looking at Helena she walked over to her placing her hands on her shoulder.
Looking into Helena's eyes Barbara began to speak.
"Hel. Relax nothing is going to happen to me and I'm not going anywhere." Helena looked down into those blue eyes as images of Barbara after the accident flooded through her mind. "But the accident. I don't."
"I know." Barbara said as she pulled Helena into a hug. Dinah was still watching the two as she slipped out of the room unseen. Barbara stroked Helena's head soothing the younger woman.
"Well now that we've got that settled we need to find someone to protect you from Dr. Raven."
"Well it's very clear that as long as I'm with you I'm a target and I don't like where this is going." Helena got up to face her. Barbara lowering her gaze.
"Helena it would only be……….."
"No, I don't want her anywhere near you. She may not hurt you but she doesn’t deserve to be anywhere you for any reason." Helena knew she sounded possessive but she couldn't lose her not now.
"Fine what did you have in mind. Because personally I'm not to keen about you going after her either. She did try to kill you tonight and going after my lover is not exactly a low priority."
"If we agree to disagree can we at least go to bed?" Helena asked half pleading. Barbara looked up at her half-awake herself reaching out a hand Helena pulled her up. The two embraced one another walking toward the bedroom. Lying down Helena held Barbara until she fell asleep.
Slowly turning Barbara over Helena rose from the bed donning her suit she left. Closing the door bedroom door she crept out. Not before coming face to face with Dinah.
"Not that I don't like the fireworks between you two. I just hope you know what you're doing." Dinah turned and walked into her room.
"So do I kid. So do I." Huntress was gone.
Dr. Megan Ravens paced her office. Why hadn't she killed her she knew the answer. Yet even to her it seemed a lame ass attempt at self wallow. She loved Barbara everything about her she just couldn't see in that wild beast of a woman. She had to find a way to get rid of her. She couldn't live with herself if she lied to Barbara but how could she get that Helena woman to leave?
Barbara rolled over in bed to find her side empty. She didn't even think she already knew. Rising from the bed she headed up to the clocktower. Sitting in front of the computer she checked the receiver Helena had it on.
"Huntress."
"Right-here."
"I thought."
"I was .. I was on my way to. I don't know what I was going to do but I came back so who knows maybe some of your sensibility has rubbed off on me." Helen said flashing a smile. Barbara just looked up to her…
"I'm glad you didn't… but."
"But?"
"Let's leave it at that for now."
Epilogue:
The rain fell down mercilessly on New Gotham as a battle was being raged on a roof-top. The Huntress and The Shadow Raven where locked in a death match. Kicking Helena to the ledge of the roof. She lost her footing and slipped. Nearly falling over the side a hand reached down and grabbed her.
"Not so fast are you?" The voice chided down.
"Not when I'm fighting shadows."
"Well to bad then." In a move to swift for mortal eyes to follow Helena had reversed there positions. Yet with the rain she couldn't grab a secure hold on the other woman. Helena heard the screams as the body hit the pavement. Turning whoever was listening.
"Huntress are you all right?"
"I'm fine. I'm on my way." Helena looked over the side one last time and took off in the direction of the clock tower. If she had waited another second she would have seen the shadow that crept from the shadows of the roof-top. If she had listened she would have heard the maniacal laughter and the menacing voice.
"We will meet again and this time it will be you that takes a flying leap."
Slinking backing into the shadows she disappeared.
