May it Be

The hardest goodbye of all stood a few feet away, studiously keeping his eyes off the shimmering Gate that would take Robin back to the past. This was not *his* Robin, Superman reminded himself for the umpteenth time, his Robin was dead. It wasn't right to keep this child here, out of his own time, no matter what Kon's heart was screaming.

Black, split toed boots came into view, and the half-breed felt a touch on his shoulder. "I just want you to know," Robin began.

"There's nothing to say," Kon cut him off. "They're waiting for you." Go. Please go. You belong with Superboy, not with me.

The vigilante lowered his head, hearing the hostile tones that had marked his first three months here resurface. He knew Kon was trying to protect himself, but it still hurt.

Something beeped, and Robin turned to look at the time portal that would carry him home. Through it's blue haze, he could see Superboy standing nervously next to Batman, Secret behind them, and Impulse waving at everyone. Other friends, long dead in this time, watched and waited for him to return to them.

He had to go back, if he ever hoped to change the future.

Swallowing the lump that had risen in his throat, Tim turned back to Superman, and gently rested his hand on Kon's cheek. "Enqueri," the younger man's voice faltered, not knowing what else to say.

Kon jerked in surprise at the nickname he'd all but forgotten. Robin had started calling him that in private after his Super senses had kicked in, the word stolen from The Watchman t.v. show. He'd turned around and stolen another word from Space Trek to use on the Teen Wonder.

"T'hy'la."

It was all Tim needed to hear. He smiled, blue eyes shining as he stood on tiptoes and pulled the Man of Steel's head down until their lips met.

"The Gate is becoming unstable," Bruce's voice echoed over the room in warning, breaking the moment.

"Tell mah veriunte shree. Tell mah." Foreheads touching, Robin whispered the promise, knowing that Superman would remember the Threshold phrase. He kissed Kon again, then pulled out of his arms, running for the Gate before it collapsed.

His boots slammed into the ramp, and Robin leapt through the plasma energy, tucking himself into a somersault.

The Teen Wonder rolled to his feet on the other side, and was immediately snatched into a hug by Superboy. Robin wrapped his arms around Kon's neck and, as they kissed, Superman felt warm arms wrapping around his own waist. He turned, seeing the black clad man behind him.

Nightshade smiled at his lover as the past and the future changed.

The End

By the way, the Threshold phrase translates to : Our love does not end in death.
