Johnny's Issue
by Robin R. Neher

"Alright! Alright! I'm coming!" Joanne DeSoto called as she made her way downstairs.

The desperate pounding on the front door continued as Jo wrapped her robe tighter around her.

"Jo?! It's Johnny! Please open up!" Johnny Gage called from outside.

"Johnny?" Jo called as she flipped on the light by the door, then opened it. "Johnny, what's wrong?"

"Jo, I caught a lady spying on me." Johnny told the wife of Roy DeSoto, his best friend and partner on LA County fire department rescue squad fifty-one. "I just got out of the shower and was going to put some clothes on when I looked out the window. Jo, there was a lady with a telescope in the building across from mine! She was looking right at me!"

"Are you sure?" Joanne asked him.

Johnny nodded.

"I'm sure it was harmless." Jo offered.

"Jo?" Roy DeSoto asked. "Who's at the door? Oh, it's you, Johnny."

"It seems Johnny here has a female admirer." Jo smiled as her husband came to join her. "He caught her looking at him through a telescope."

"Oh?" 6'1 Roy asked. "Been parading around with no clothes on again, Junior?!"

"Roy, she saw everything!" Johnny told him.

"So?" Roy asked.

"Roy, she was eyeing me!" John exploded as Roy and his wife laughed.

"John, it was your own fault." Roy told him. "How many times have we talked about you walking around your place naked with nothing covering the windows?"

"Roy," Joanne stepped in.

"Hon, I don't parade around here in the nude." Roy told her.

"I sometimes wish you would," Jo teased.

"Guys, what do I do about my lady spy?" John asked.

"Johnny, get some curtains or something for your windows." Jo suggested. "Also, dress before you come out of the bathroom like you do at the station."

"I will," Johnny promised. "I think I'm gonna go to a motel for a few days though."

"I think that's a good idea," Roy agreed.

"Me too," Joanne added.

"Good night you two and thanks," Johnny grinned, then left.

"So, you'd like me to walk around nude, Huh?" Roy asked as his wife shut the door.

"Sometimes," She admitted.

"Well, why don't we go upstairs?" Roy breathed in her ear. "I'll dance naked for you too."

"Hmmm," Jo purred as her husband took her by the hand and led her toward their bedroom.

***********************************

The next day, Roy arrived for his shift at fire station 51. Entering through the back door, he was met by his stationmates, sitting around the kitchen table, having coffee.

"Morning," He greeted them. "Where's Gage?"

"In the dorm." Captain Hank Stanley replied. "Roy, he seems jittery this morning."

"He has an admirer." Roy explained. "She likes to look at him through a telescope, naked."

"What a scary thought!" Fireman Chester Kelly winced, jokingly. "Who in their right mind would wanna see him nude?"

"Chet, Johnny was taking a shower last night and caught a lady peeking at him." Roy explained. "He's really upset about it."

"Roy, he's just sore that he wasn't the one doing the peeking!" Chet scoffed.

"I don't think so." Roy disagreed. "He was really upset when he came to my place last night."

"He bothered you over THAT?" Chet gasped as Johnny came in from the dorm.

"You okay?" Roy asked his partner.

"Not really," Johnny replied.

"Gage, you still bothered about last night?" Chet asked. "So, a chick took a look see at you! I thought you liked it when gals did that!"

"CHET!!!" Johnny growled.

"John, you get a kick out of leering at women, but now, the tables have turned and it just burns you up!" Chet taunted. "How do you like it, Johnny-boy? How do you like being harassed?"

"How do you like it, Johnny?" Asked Mike Stoker, A-Shift's Engineer. "How many times have you stalked the nurses at Rampart?"

"I never stalked them!" John defended himself.

"John, there are times when your behavior toward women has borderlined on harassment and stalking." Roy spoke up. "Look, I'm not saying that anyone deserves to be spied on, but this experience could be a lesson for you. There are times when I think you go too far in the hunt for a date, now, you know what it feels like to be on the receiving end."

Johnny sighed as he slumped into a chair next to Roy.

"I just want the same thing every other guy in the world does." John said after a minute.

"We know, Pal." Hank soothed.

"I never mean to make any female uncomfortable." The Paramedic continued. "I just want somebody to love. I'm not looking for anything long term, I just want a girl that I can have some fun with and a girl that will think I'm a fun guy to be with."

"Johnny, are you saying that some girls don't think you're fun to be around?" Chet asked.

"Kelly," Hank warned.

"Some have called me the date from hell," John answered.

"Well, you can be just that sometimes," His partner told him. "I've seen you be downright obnoxious to your dates at times."

"Now, wait a minute!" Johnny growled, rising to his feet, only to be cut off by the tones.

Station 51, station 8, engine 86, engine 127, battalion 14, structure fire at the school. 455 Asner Way. 455 Asner Way. Crosstreet: Mars. Timeout: 08:05.

"Station 51, KMG-365." Hank responded as Roy and the rest scrambled aboard the apparatus.

Hank then took his place on the engine. Mike then guided it from the station behind the squad. As they sped toward the scene, Johnny just stared straight ahead out the windshield.

Oh boy, he's mad. Roy thought.

When they arrived on scene some ten minutes later, they saw smoke pouring out a window. Hank was quickly on the engine's radio.

"LA, station 51 at scene! We have smoke showing from a first floor window! Continue other units!" The Captain requested as a man in a janitor's uniform came running up to them.

"Some kid left something in the oven too long in the home ec room!" The man told Hank.

"Okay, what room is it?" Hank asked the man who appeared to be in his early fifties.

"Room 102." The man replied.

"Is everyone out of the building?" Johnny asked as he buttoned his turnout coat.

"Johnny, look," Roy suddenly cut in. "over there."

"Where?" John asked.

"Across the street." Roy replied.

Johnny looked across the street and saw his lady spy and her telescope again.

"What's she doing here?!" John scowled.

"Let's find out." Roy replied.

"Hey, I need you guys here." Hank reminded them as other units arrived on scene.

"Cap, that lady's after me!" Johnny insisted.

"John, what's the harm in looking?" Chet asked the medic. "That's all she seems to be doing."

"So far." John mumbled. "I'm gonna go after her."

"John! John!" Hank called as the distraught man started to walk away from the fire. "Gage, we are on a-Damn! Roy, get back here! Roy!"

Both men were already across the street though and out of sight. Cap just sighed and turned his attention to the job at hand. Roy and John, meanwhile, entered the restaurant across the street.

"She's gone!" Johnny cried upon looking out the window they'd seen her at. "Roy, I must be goin crazy."

"I saw her too, Partner." Roy reminded him. "We'd better get back and tell the Cap.

Upon arrival back at the fire scene, they went to find Hank. They found the Captain, placing the other units.

"Find her?" Cap asked.

"She was gone when we got there." Johnny answered.

"So, you wasted time that you two could've been here chasing some ghost with a telescope." Cap summed it up. "Look, I have enough to deal with managing my crew and other units on this scene! The last thing I need is two of my crew running off when I need them most! John. if you're that scared of this gal, call Vince or another police officer, but when we are on a call, I expect you both to do your jobs!"

"Cap, you have no idea-" Johnny began.

"Johnny, you're right. I have no idea what you're going though, but my job is that fire there!" Hank cut him off. "That gal is probably someone you teased and messed with and now she expects what you promised her!"

"Gage, one of these days, you're gonna mess with the wrong little gal and you may end up with a knife in you or your manhood cut off." Chet added. "I'll be the one laughing his head off and saying, I told you so when that happens."

"Look, guys, none of us are unsympathetic to John's plight, but there's a job to do here. Either you get your mind on the job or you get outta here and I'll have LA send another squad." Hank told them.

"It might be best if you did just that, Captain." Johnny replied. "I wouldn't want to cause anyone here to become distracted by my problem."

With that, Roy and John went back to the squad.

"Squad 51, available." Johnny reported to LA.

Squad 51. LA returned.

LA, engine 51. Respond another squad to this incident. Stanley was heard to request.

Engine 51. Dispatch returned. Squad 110 in place of squad 51, structure fire at the school. 455 Asner Way. 455 Asner Way. Crosstreet: Mars. Timeout: 08:19.

"We sure blew that!" Johnny remarked as he and Roy left the scene. "It's just so weird though."

"What?" Roy prompted as he drove.

"If I'd been a gal and my spy were a man, those guys would've rallied around me." Johnny replied.

"You may be right," Roy agreed.

"Maybe I should take some leave," John mused.

"Why?" His partner asked. "Don't tell me you're scared of this gal."

"I'm not scared. I just think that the Cap was right back there." John replied. "This is a personal problem that I have to deal with on my own. You guys shouldn't be dragged into this, the department either. I'm gonna ask Cap to arrange for me to have some leave."

*******************************

"No," Hank said a few hours later.

"But, Cap!" Johnny started to argue.

"Johnny, are you gonna hide from your peeping Tomette your whole life?" The Captain asked.

"I'm not hiding!" The medic defended himself.

"What do you call it then?" Hank wanted to know.

"I call it protecting myself and the station." Johnny answered.

"Hey, Gage, you have a package." Chet interrupted, sticking his head in the door.

"Ah," Johnny smiled as he left the office and followed Kelly into the kitchen.

Spotting the package on the table, the Paramedic took no chances as he stepped toward it.

"Open it, Junior." Roy encouraged.

Johnny reached the plainly wrapped parcel and took off the brown wrapping.

"Oh, here's a note." He remarked, holding up a piece of folded paper.

"Let's see," Roy said, taking it from him.

Opening the note, Roy read it aloud for all to hear.

"Dear sexy," Roy read, out loud. "I think you are the hottest fireman I've ever seen. I almost had what you call an MI when I saw you the other night. You are a man's man and put all others to shame."

"WHOOO!!" Chet and Marco teased.

Cap glared both into silence as Roy read on.

"Please accept this package with the spirit with which it's intended." Roy finished."There's no signature at the end."

"Oh!" Johnny breathed as he held up a bunch of thongs and a box of chocolates.

"Someone must really like you, Johnny." Chet remarked.

"Well, all this is going right back the way it came." John declared, smacking Chet's hand as he reached for a candy. "The US mail."

With that, Johnny put the candy and sexy underwear back in the box and sealed it with tape.

"Johnny, this lady like ya!" Chet protested.

"Chet, I don't want or need her kind of attentions." Johnny told him.

"Funny from a guy who likes the attentions of Rampart's nurses." Roy remarked.

"This lady is a nut, Roy!" Johnny told his partner.

"Johnny, how are you gonna send it back? There's no return address on the wrapper." Roy said.

"I'll just sat it out with the trash then." His partner decided, then headed outside to the station's dumpster with the parcel.

"I just can't figure him out." Roy sighed as soon as John was outta sight.

"You're not the only one!" Chet laughed. "I think Gage is the one that's cuckoo! If Gage had sent her that stuff, he'd have been happy to date her! The woman is the aggressor and he can't stand that!"

"You're right, Chet." Marco Lopez agreed. "I think that this gal may be someone that Johnny tried the so called Gage charm on and it led to her wanting more than he can handle."

"True," Roy nodded as his partner rejoined them.

"What a waste of good candy." Chet shook his head.

"John, whoever this lady is, you need to meet with her." Hank told him.

"Cap!" John protested.

"You need to be a man about this." Cap insisted. "You need to find out-"

The tones cut him off before he could say anymore.

Squad 51, man down at the blood bank. Harbor valley hospital. Harbor valley hospital. Timeout: 11:50.

"Squad 51, KMG-365." Roy replied, then joined Johnny in the squad as they left the station.

Shortly after, the back doorbell rang. Cap answered it and saw a lady of about five feet tall wearing a red polo shirt and jeans.

"Yes? Can I help you?" Hank asked.

"I'm looking for John Gage. Is he here?" The lady asked.

"I'm afraid he just left on a rescue." The Captain replied. "I'm Captain Stanley."

"I'm Shawn McShane." The lady nodded.

"Uh, why don't you come in and have some coffee?" Hank invited.

"Thank you," The young woman replied, stepping inside the station.

"We have a visitor, Gentlemen." Hank informed his men. "Shawn McShane, meet Mike Stoker, Chet Kelly and Marco Lopez."

"You wouldn't be Johnny's peeping Tomette, would you?" Chet asked.

"Guilty," Shawn blushed as Hank scowled at the short firefighter.

"Uh, I think there's some things you should know about John." Chet said. "He may be attractive, but he can be a real jerk at times."

"Yeah, especially to women." Mike added. "You see, Johnny, well, he only sees women as sex objects. He has a one track mind when it comes to dating. Miss, take my advice and forget about Johnny."

"It'd sure be ashamed to see a lovely young lady hurt because of a boorish man like Gage." Marco added. "He harasses and bothers the nurses at Rampart General Hospital."

"Marco!" Cap yelled. "I'm sorry, Shawn. My men seem to have forgotten that John has alot of good qualities too."

Marco and the rest left the kitchen as Cap served the lady with long black hair a cup of coffee, then joined her at the table.

"Captain, I know about Johnny and his reputation. I also know about the long list of ladies he's dated." Shawn assured him.

"How?" Hank queried.

"I asked the neighbors in his building." Shawn replied. "I've been watching him for quite awhile. I find it interesting that he just now noticed."

"I don't." Hank smiled. "Johnny isn't the most observant person at times."

***********************************

As the guys and John's admirer continued to talk at the station, Roy and Johnny were in route to the blood bank.

Squad 51, cancel. Dispatch advised over the squad's radio.

"Squad 51," Johnny acknowledged as Roy killed the code R response.

"Johnny, we need to have a serious talk." Roy told him. "About this admirer of yours."

"Sure," John replied.

"Why don't we go somewhere and eat?" Roy suggested.

"Kay," John nodded.

Before anymore could be said, tones came over the radio.

Squad 51 with truck 106, man trapped on ledge of building. 14700 Wells Ave. 14700 Wells Ave. Crosstreet: Ericson. Timeout: 12:09.

"Squad 51, 10-4." Johnny replied as Roy again turned on the lightbar and siren and drove toward the scene.

As the squad arrived on scene a few minutes later, they were met by truck 106's Captain.

"See him?" The Cap asked.

"Yeah," Johnny replied as he saw the man in question, holding on for dear life to a ledge on the tenth floor of a skyscraper. "What happened?"

"According to the manager here, our victim is an amateur stunt man." Captain Charlie Evans answered. "He was going to jump out of that window up there and down to an airbag below."

"And, he got scared." Roy guessed. "Could we get him down with the life net?"

The Cap shook his head.

"I think it's be better if we used the ladder." He told the Paramedics.

"I'll get the belts." Johnny told them.

***********************************

As Roy and John got ready to go after the victim, lunch was being served at 51's with Shawn as their guest.

"So, Johnny has a history with women?" She was asking.

"He does." Hank admitted as he served up his clam chowder.

"See, Gage, he doesn't stay with any one girl for very long." Chet took over "It's not that he cheats on them. He breaks up with them and moves on to somebody else within a week, maybe two."

"I see," Shawn nodded. "That being the case, maybe I oughta rethink my feelings for him."

"Good idea, Miss." Mike Stoker agreed.

"Maybe he just isn't as mature a man as I thought he was." The lady mused as she toyed with the chowder. "Heck, he's more like a high school boy than a man from what you fellas said."

"John has his good qualities too." Cap was quick to point out.

"I'm sure he does, but I don't wanna go any further with him if he's only gonna be with someone else in a week." The woman said. "It'd be a waste of both my time and his. Thank you, Guys."

***********************************

As Shawn was about to leave, Johnny and Roy returned from their run.

"Hi," Johnny grinned as soon as he saw Shawn. "My name's Johnny Gage."

"I'm Shawn McShane." Shawn replied. "Excuse me."

"What the?!-" Johnny asked as she pushed her way past him and left the station.

"Uh, John, that was your lady with the telescope." Hank explained. "She arrived just after you guys rolled out. I hope you don't mind, but we told her all about you."

"I see," Johnny replied. "No wonder she left here so fast. What did you tell her?!"

"The truth." Mike Stoker replied. "We told her of your history and reputation with women. We only told her what we thought she needed to hear."

"About what a jerk I am sometimes, right?!" Johnny demanded. "About my seeming inability to keep a girl for more than a week, right?! Well, gee thanks, Guys!"

"Johnny, you were gonna send her gifts back!" Roy reminded his partner.

"You didn't seem interested in her!" Chet added, hotly.

"I wasn't, but I would've liked the chance to meet her and tell her how it is myself!" Johnny yelled. "Contrary to popular belief, I am a sensitive guy and can let women down gently!"

With that, John stormed into the dorm.

***********************************

After giving his partner some time to calm down, Roy went into the dorm.

"Roy, I don't wanna talk!" Johnny warned him.

"Tough!" Roy told him. "Johnny, you were way out of line in the kitchen! Those guys just told her what you yourself know to be the truth! You are a jerk with girls! When you date one, you only have one thing in mind!"

"You Son of a bitch!" John hissed as he rose to his feet from his bunk.

"Johnny, there is more to being with a woman than sex! There is more to a relationship than penis in vagina! Look, if you're gonna find a mate someday, Pal, you gotta learn how to be a man first!"

"Are you implying that I'm not a man?!" Johnny demanded.

"Johnny, you're not even out of puberty yet." Roy answered. "Physically, you're a man, but mentally and emotionally, you're about sixteen years old! I'm sorry, but that's the truth! Haven't you ever wondered why you rarely get a second date?!"

Johnny sank back down onto the bed and buried his head in his hands.

"Am I really like that?" Johnny asked.

Roy nodded.

"I really am a jerk!" Johnny realized, then started to cry. "I'm not a man! I'm a jerk!"

"Johnny-" Roy reached out to him.

"I'll never be a man, Roy!" His partner sobbed. "I'll never be the kind of man a woman wants to marry!"..............

******************************

"Jo, he was really hurt." Roy told his wife the next day over breakfast.

"Honey, he needed to hear that." Joanne answered.

"I told him he wasn't a man!" Roy told her.

"Honey, in alot of ways, Johnny Gage is not a man. He's immature and insecure, not to mention a show off. If I were single, I wouldn't date him." Jo stated. "I don't know of any woman that would date John once they met him."

"I wonder if we didn't go too far though?" Roy asked.

"Honey, both he and this Shawn needed to hear the truth. Shawn was only attracted to Johnny's body. They both need to realize that love can't be built on looks alone."

"Are you saying that you didn't fall for my rugged good looks?" Roy teased.

"Honey, I fell in love with the whole package." Joanne smiled, then kissed him.

****************************

"Roy, I need to talk to you, in private." Nurse Dixie "Dix" McCall requested as he and Johnny stood at the nurse's station getting needed supplies for squad 51 two days later.

"I'll be in the squad." Johnny said, then made his way out through the ER's double doors. Once he was gone, Dix turned to Roy.

"Roy, how did you do it?" The head nurse asked.

"Do what?" Roy replied.

"What did you say to John?" Dix elaborated. "He acted professional and totally appropriate with my nurses. He was even polite to them."

"Dix, I-" Roy stammered.

"Whatever you told him took, because it's the best I've ever seen him." Dix smiled. "Thanks, Roy. On behalf of all the nurses, thank you."

"Uh, yeah." The senior medic stammered as the head nurse went to tend to other matters.

Roy just shook his head as he went to meet Johnny outside.

"Ready to go, Partner?" Dark haired Johnny asked as Roy went around to his side of the squad.

"Yeah," Roy answered. "Uh, Johnny."

"Yeah?" John replied.

"What was that all about in there with the nurses?" Roy asked him. "You actually were professional toward them."

"So? We were there to do a job." Johnny shrugged.

"Is it what I said the other day?" Roy wanted to know.

"No," Johnny was quick to assure his partner. "Squad 51, available."

Squad 51. LA returned over the squad's radio, followed by three beeps and a set of tones.

Engine 51 with squad 51, difficult breathing. 147 West Tucker Ave. 147 West Tucker Ave. Crosstreet: Allen. Timeout: 08:23.

"Squad 51, 10-4." Johnny responded.

Engine 51, 10-4. Hank was heard to respond as Roy and Johnny raced toward the scene.

***********************************

"I'm telling you, Joe, something's up with John!" Dixie was telling Dr. Joe Early as they sat in the breakroom inside the hospital as squad 51 was going to another victim's aid. "He didn't ask even one nurse for a date, nor was he all over one for a date!"

"Well, maybe he's got a new girl outside of here." Silver haired Early speculated as he sipped his coffee.

"Joe, he called all my nurses Miss or Mrs, even Ma'am." Dix told him. "Since when does John Gage call anyone Ma'am?"

"Well, maybe someone talked to him." Remarked Dr. Kelly Brackett over his own coffee.

"Or someone hurt his feelings." The head nurse speculated.........

***********************************
Roy DeSoto was thinking the same thing as his Captain's voice came over the squad's radio.

LA, Engine 51, we have a false alarm at this location. Cancel squad 51. Stanley was heard to request.

Squad 51, cancel. Engine 51 reports false alarm.

"Squad 51." Johnny sighed. "Slow morning."

"Yeah," Roy replied as John hung up the radio's mic. "Johnny, did I hurt your feelings last shift?"

"No," Johnny assured him. "As a matter of fact, you helped me."

"Helped you?" Roy asked.

"Roy, when you told me I wasn't a man the other day, it hurt. Then, when I got home and I thought it over, I realized that you had several valid points."

"Go on," Roy encouraged.

"I saw some things about myself that I didn't wanna see." John continued. "I realized that I was a jackass with girls. I dated them for awhile and dumped them or they dumped me."

"Johnny, that happens to everyone." Roy replied.

"Yeah, but when I first heard about Shawn, I have to admit that she made me uncomfortable. For the first time in my life, I was what I had made women. Sex objects. I was being looked at for my body and Roy, it made me wanna throw up. I felt horrible about all the times I did that to girls. I felt rotten."

"Roy, I spent the last two nights looking back on every date I've ever had." Johnny told his best friend.

"And?" Roy prompted.

"I've come to the conclusion that I, John Roderick Gage, have absolutely no business dating." Johnny announced. "I realized that I'm just not ready."

"Ready for what?" Roy wanted to know.

"Roy, I'm not ready to have any sort of a relationship with a woman, dating wise I mean." Johnny explained. "See, I never had anyone talk to me about sex."

"C'mon!" Roy scoffed.

"It's true!" Johnny insisted. "My mother was never comfortable talking about that and my father wasn't around to tell me about the facts of life, so I've been winging it with women."

"Johnny, dating and sex don't come with how to manuals!" Roy giggled.

"Roy!" Johnny growled.

"Johnny, listen to me. I think you're scared. You try to be something you're not as a way to hide your shyness around women. Shawn got to see the real you the other day."

"Yeah, through the guys!" Johnny hissed as the squad arrived back at 51's.

"Johnny, you threw away her gift, remember?" Roy reminded him as he backed the squad into the apparatus bay.

"Gage, you have a phone call, in the office." Hank told him as Roy turned off the squad's motor. "It's Shawn."

"Thanks, Cap." Johnny sighed, then went into the office.

"Roy, what is with him?" Hank asked the senior medic. "I thought he'd be delighted by a girl being interested in him."

"Cap, I think Miss McShane made John see something he didn't want to." Roy told him.

"Oh? What?" A-Shift's skipper asked.

"Himself," Roy answered as Johnny rejoined them. "Well?"

"She wants to meet with me." Johnny told his friends. "I agreed to meet with her."

"Good. Where?" Roy asked.

"I agreed to meet her on a double date, with you and Joanne." Johnny answered.

"What?!" Roy roared.

"Roy, I don't wanna meet her alone!" Johnny argued.

"Uh, DeSoto," Stanley called, cocking his finger at him.

Roy followed as the Cap lead him into his office and shut the door.

"Roy, I think a double date's a good idea." Hank said. "I don't like the idea of John meeting her alone either."

"Okay," Roy decided. "If it helps him, okay."

With that, Roy and Cap rejoined the others outside.

"Okay, Johnny, Joanne and I will do it, but you owe us, BIG!" Roy told him, then went to call his wife.

"Johnny, you okay, Pal?" Hank asked him.

"Cap, what I didn't tell Roy was that I got a letter from Shawn this morning. I found it taped to my door as I was leaving for shift." Johnny revealed. "It said she dreams about me, in a thong and dancing for her."

"Kinky lady." Cap remarked.

"She also said, she'd like to tie me up and whip me." John added.

"Some women like S&M." Cap shrugged.

"I'm not sure I do though." Johnny told him.

"How do you know unless you've tried it?" Roy asked as he rejoined them. "Johnny, I danced for my wife in the buff last night."

"Too much information, Pally!" Johnny winced as Hank chuckled and the tones went off.

Station 51, man down at the department store. 7714 North Eden Ave. 7714 North Eden Ave. Crosstreet: Eve. Timeout: 09:10.

"Station 51, KMG-365." Cap acknowledged as Johnny and the rest boarded the trucks.

***********************************

When they arrived on scene ten minutes later, they were met by none other than Shawn herself.

"Shawn!" John cried."You work here?!"

"Yeah," She replied. "A man claims he hurt his back in the bathroom. Follow me."

Cap, Johnny and the rest followed her to a restroom in the back of the store. As Johnny was about to enter the men's room, Hank stopped him.

"I think we can handle this, John." Hank said. "I think you and Miss McShane here have some, uh, things to talk about."

"Cap!" Johnny protested as Roy took the biophone from him, then followed the rest of the crew inside the bathroom. "Don't leave me! Cap! Guys!"

"Johnny, I'm not gonna bite! C'mon!" Shawn said as she led him toward the nearby storeroom. "As the Captain said, we have some things to talk about!"

Johnny had no choice but to follow as she led the way inside a storeroom and shut the door behind them.

"Okay, John Gage, your friends aren't here now. It's just you and me now." Shawn told him. "I want some answers and I want them now! I wanna know why you threw away my package and I wanna know why you don't wanna be with me!"

"Shawn, look, I don't know you and you don't know me, yet, you've seen me naked, sent me gifts and letters." John told her.

"Is that why you didn't have the guts to face me?" She asked. "Is that why you hid behind your colleagues when you saw me just now?!"

"Yes," The Paramedic admitted. "Shawn, the truth is, you make me uncomfortable."

"Okay. Why?" Shawn asked of him.

"Well, you spied on me in some of my most private moments for starters." He answered. "Then you send me gifts that were not in any way appropriate. Last but not least, you send me a note that details what you'd like to do to me if given the chance."

"So?" Shawn prompted. "Johnny, you are so sexy, but you go from girl to girl. Nobody ever gets to know the real John Gage. You never give anyone a chance."

"Look, let's cut to the chase here." John said. "You said that you wanted to meet me, right?!"

Shawn nodded.

"Okay, my place. Tomorrow 8:30 AM." Johnny told her. "I wanna see you in something hot."

"Deal." Shawn agreed as Johnny wrote down his home address on a slip of paper from his shirt pocket and handed it to her.

Johnny then left to rejoin Roy and the rest as Shawn looked at the piece of paper he'd just given her.

****************************************************

The next day, Shawn arrived at Johnny's on time. He answered on her first knock.

"Come in," He invited. "The kitchen's this way."

"T-the kitchen?" She stammered as she stepped inside and he shut the door.

"That's right." Johnny answered. "Any girl of mine has to be able to cook a meal for me. You see, I can work for up to a week at a time at the station and when I come home, I'm gonna be tired more times than not. I need a gal that can look after things here while I work."

"Johnny-I." Shawn stammered. "I thought we were gonna-"

"Honey, I don't have the energy to love you, much less romance you right now. I've just come off of a twenty-four hour shift at the station and all I want now is my breakfast." Johnny said as Shawn started to cry.

"You Son of a bitch!" She cried, then slapped his face, hard, knocking the young man into a chair. "If I'd known you were like this, I wouldnt've come here!"

"Shawn, wait!" Johnny pleaded as she yanked open his apartment door."Shawn! Don't go! Shawn!"

John could only watch as she ran out, crying and heard the sound of the door slamming as she left. At that moment, John Roderick Gage knew he'd blown it, big time.

******************************************************

"Yeah, you blew it all right." Roy said when he heard what happened two days later as he and John were changing for work at 51's. "What the hell were you thinking?!"

"I just wanted to give her a taste of her own medicine!" John defended himself. "She was living a fantasy!"

"So, you took it upon yourself to give her a dose of reality, right?!" Roy guessed.

"Yeah! I wanted her to see that life with a fireman isn't all she thinks it is!" Johnny answered.

"Let me ask you something, Johnny-boy." Chet Kelly spoke up from his locker down the row from Roy's. "How the hell do you know what her ideas are? How do you know what her dreams are? Did you ever bother to talk to her or did you just assume she was crazy cause she was the one that made the first move?"

"Why don't you answer him?" Shawn encouraged as she entered the lockeroom.

"What are you doing here!?" He demanded.

"I just came by to tell you that I won't be bothering you anymore." Shawn answered. "I also came by to say on behalf of all women everywhere, go jump off the nearest bridge cause we have no use for sexist, uneducated pigs like you! Johnny, you were right when you said I was living a fantasy! I was living one! I thought that you were a real man, but I sure found out the other day what a jackass you are!"

Johnny was pale as she stepped over to him.

"Somehow, somewhere in your childhood, you were taught that a woman is nothing unless she lives for you!" Shawn told him. "Well, we women are people too, John Gage and we'll be just fine without you and your goofy grin! As a matter of fact, I can replace you and that grin with a cold piece of liver!"

With that, Shawn turned to go.

"When your ready to go from boy to man, give me a call. I'm in the book!" Shawn finished. "Roy, will you walk me out?"

"Sure," Roy replied, then escorted her out.

"What are you looking at?!" Johnny growled.

"Nothing," Chet assured him.

***********************************

All just went on about changing for work as Roy returned from escorting Shawn out. Roy just changed in silence, then went to the kitchen for coffee. John joined him shortly after.

"Well?" He asked.

"Well, what?!" Roy replied. "What do you want me to say, John?! I just don't understand you now!"

"Why?!" John asked. "Because I'm not married with a family like you?!"

"You're jealous of me." Roy realized.

"WHAT?!" Johnny laughed.

"You're jealous!" Roy laughed.

"How can you even think that?" John asked his partner.

"We all know that you wish you had family. I also know how difficult being alone in the world is for you." Roy calmed down. "You see us with our families and are reminded of what you don't have. It hurts you inside, doesn't it?"

"I think we all know how Johnny hurts." Cap chimed in as he joined the Paramedics. "I think that with the hurt, there's resentment too. John here resents you and me cause we have found love and happiness with others."

"No!" John yelled, then stormed out of the kitchen.

Roy was hot on his best friend's heels as he went into the dorm.

"Johnny, we struck a nerve, didn't we?" The older medic asked. "Tell the truth."

"It's not that, Roy." A defeated Johnny said as he sank into the chair at the desk by the Captain's bed. "You have no idea what it's like to be a piece of meat. That's how most women see me. Oh, they love me, every single one of them. They love lookin at ol John when he's washing his car without a shirt on or fixing something for them!"

Roy nodded.

"Oh, the ladies sure love me when they see me at a fire in my turnouts or I pull them from a smoke filled building or extricate them from a car wreck! I'm a big hero to them! Get one of them in a room with me outta uniform and watch them dump me or slap me!" Johnny hissed. "I resent women who love me because of what I do for a living or how I look!"

"Like Shawn." Roy recognized.

"Exactly." Johnny nodded as Stanley came in.

"Roll call, Guys." He told them.

"Be right there, Cap." John replied.

John and Roy left the dorm and followed Hank into the Apparatus room where they joined Chet, Marco Lopez and Engineer Mike Stoker in line by the engine As Cap took his place in front of his men. The tones started sounding before the A-Shift skipper got one word out.

Station 10, engine 51, engine 11, fire alarm ringing in the elementary school. 55 West Johnston Ave. 55 West Johnston Ave. Crosstreet: Ventura. Timeout: 08:01.

"Engine 51, KMG-365." Hank responded, then joined the crew on the engine as they left the station.

"Roy, about what I said in the dorm-" Johnny began as Roy shut the bay door.

"Johnny, you didn't say anything wrong." The Senior Paramedic assured him. "I think that what you said needed to be said. It helped me to understand you better."

"How?" The younger man asked.

"You revealed alot to me in those angry words." Roy explained. "You have reason to feel as you do about women. I see that now."

"That don't excuse what I did to Shawn." Johnny told his partner. "I was a complete ass toward her!"

"Yeah, but she was toward you too." Roy reminded him.

"She could've been the one, Roy." John said, sadly. "I'll never know now because I just had to be an ass!"

"Johnny, look her up in the phone book." Roy suggested. "There can't be too many McShanes in LA County."

"I doubt she'd even talk to me." John hedged as he grabbed some cleaning supplies from the storage closet. "I'll be in the latrine."

"Johnny-" Roy began.

Johnny just went to clean the bathroom. The rest of the morning was spent cleaning the station and inventorying the squad. Once the chores were done, Johnny made his way into the dorm to think while Roy went to read in the rec room. The engine arrived back from it's run shortly after and soot covered Mike joined John in the dorm, along with Chet.

"How'd it go, Guys?" Johnny asked them as they walked by him on their way to the shower.

"Johnny, it was a mess." Chet told him. "It was a fire in the school cafeteria. It was started by someone leaving an oven on. It took us two hours to get the fire out and one hour to do the overhaul."

"Sounds like a real mess." Johnny remarked.

"You still thinking about Shawn?" Chet asked him.

"I really blew it, Chet." Johnny told him.

"So what?" Chet asked. "You blew it. Maybe you can learn a lesson from the experience."

"She might've been the one I was looking for." Johnny stated.

"John, look, we both know that she would've wound up like any number of other gals you victimized over the years. You're a love em and leave em guy, Johnny-baby. That's just the way you are." Chet told him.

As Chet left to grab a clean uniform from his locker, John couldn't help but think that the Irish fireman was right.

***********************************

The rest of the shift passed with very few runs and when he got off the next day, Johnny looked up Shawn's address in the phone book.

"So, you're gonna call her, Huh?" Roy asked as he and John were walking to their cars in the parking lot.

"I'm gonna go by her place on my way home." Johnny replied. "I wanna apologize to her face to face. Later."

Johnny got in his Land Rover and leaving 51's he made his way over to Shawn's apartment building which was across the street from the one he lived in. Going inside, he bumped into the lady herself as she was leaving for work.

"John," She greeted the dark haired man. "What are you doing here?"

"I came to apologize for the other day." He explained. "Have you got a minute? I'd like to talk to you."

"Johnny, I'm sorry, but I cannot forgive what you did the other day. You had fun at my expense." Shawn told him. "You hurt me outta some childish need to get back at me."

"Shawn-" Johnny reached out to her.

"Johnny, one of these days you're gonna learn that love is not a game. You're gonna meet a girl that will see beyond your charms and your smile and see you as you really are. A manipulative, self-centered, oversexed bastard! Part of any successful relationship is having two people who are mature enough to understand the responsibilities that go with a relationship and with sexual activity." Shawn told him.

Johnny nodded.

"I'm not saying this to hurt you, I'm saying it in hopes that you'll rethink your behavior toward women. Johnny, I love you. A part of my heart always will, but I see now that you're not ready for a serious relationship with me or with any other woman." Shawn finished.

"Shawn, I realize that I acted badly the other day, but it wasn't because of anything you did. I was carrying around alot of hurt and resentment. See, alot of women have used me too. Some have only liked me because I'm a firefighter. Others have only liked me for my looks." Johnny told her. "I've never found anyone who loved me for me."

"You have now." Shawn smiled, gently. "C'mon."

Johnny followed as she led him toward her apartment.

"Make yourself at home. I'll be right back." She told him as she shut her door behind them.

Johnny sat down on her sofa and looked around as she went back into her bedroom. As Johnny looked around the small apartment. He saw photos along the walls. He guessed they were of Shawn's family.

"I'm back." She brought him out of his thoughts.

Johnny gasped when he saw her. She was now dressed in a shimmering red dress that ran all the way to her feet. Her hair shone as it cascaded down her back.

"Wow!" The Paramedic breathed as she turned on a record player.

"Dance with me?" She invited as a slow song played.

John rose to his feet and took her in his strong arms.

***********************************

As they danced, Johnny felt something he'd never before felt. As he held Shawn close, his heart skipped a beat.

"Johnny?" She asked.

"You know, I have a strange feeling." He remarked. "I have the feeling you ain't gonna be on my love em and leave em list. Shawn, are you still hot for me?"

"Yeah," She admitted. "This time though, I'm in love with the man I have in my arms, not the fireman I saw at the fire."

"Well, that's good, cause I'm falling for the lady I'm holding now." Johnny told her. "Not just sexually either."

"Why, Johnny Gage, I do believe that the man in you is emerging." Shawn smiled. "I'd like to fix breakfast for you."

"Only if you let me help." He purred as she pulled him into the kitchen which was just off the living room. "I'd better warn you, the guys at the station rib me about my cooking."

"Well, I nearly gag on my cooking!" Shawn giggled. "I've nearly burned this place down a time or two with my eggs!"

"Well, I think between the two of us, we can come up with a half way decent breakfast." Johnny grinned.
