AND BABY MAKES THREE
by Taffy
"MICHAEL!!!! STOP!!!!" Taffy squealed as their car passed by a spacious home in Los Angeles.
Nearly jumping out of his skin at her scream, Mike slowly brought the car to the curb, pulling it to a rolling stop and looked at Taffy with the look only an expectant father could have when his wife was due soon.
"What's wrong? Is it the baby? Are you alright?"
"That's Clint Eastwood's house!" Taffy said as she exited from the car and ambled her way up the brick walkway towards the front gates of the house.
"TAFFY!!! YOU CAN"T JUST GO UP THERE!!!" Mike yelled after her and quickly throwing open his driver's side door, scrambled out of the car and strode quickly after her. Taffy had her hands wrapped around two of the bars on the gates, squinting as she peered through them by the time he reached her side.
"I wonder if he is home?" she said softly to Mike as he arrived beside her with a look of exasperation crossing his handsome face, before taking her firmly by the upper arm.
"He's probably at work, where I was supposed to be 10 minutes ago to meet with Chief McConnikee. Now come on, let's get going. The last thing I need is the Chief to be mad at me."
"Alright.." Taffy sighed dreamily, allowing Mike to lead her back down to the car as she looked back at the house. "…I'd sure love to meet him some day."
"You and a few million other women." Mike said as he opened the door for Taffy and helped her into her seat. He closed her door and then walked around the front of his car to his side and got in. Taffy still had her head turned toward the house as Mike looked at her, then cleared his throat.
"Your husband here, remember me?"
Taffy turned her head and looked at Mike. "I'm sorry hon. It's just that I've admired him for the last few years and I would love to do something nice for him sometime."
"Send him a birthday card or something." Mike said absentmindedly as he pulled the car slowly back into the traffic.
Taffy thought for a moment and then smiled.
`Michael Stoker…..' she thought as she gazed out towards the passing houses `You might just have something here.'
Part Two
Mike sat at the kitchen table, in the dayroom of Station 51, with Chief McConnikee. They were just finishing up their conversation, going over some Fire Department business. The quick departure of C- shift going out for a run, over an hour earlier, had given the two men some privacy for a leisurely talk as they both enjoyed a cup of freshly made coffee. From time to time, Mike glanced over at Taffy, who was sitting on the leather sofa. She was reading a newspaper article she seemed engrossed in. Every now and then she fished her hand into a bag of Oreo cookies she had found in the cupboard, labeled with the name of Johnny. Henry was lying across what he could find of her lap totally oblivious to the kicks from the baby Taffy was carrying, as he carefully cleaned up any dropped cookie crumbs.
Chief McConnikee finished the last of the coffee in his cup before turning his attention to Mike's wife as he was about ready to leave.
"When is the baby due Mrs. Stoker?" he asked then waited for her response.
She never looked up and continued to read the article, also as oblivious to the Chief's question as Henry himself seemed to be. The Chief looked at Mike in confusion.
"Taffy!" Mike said, raising his voice a little higher then he normally would, in an attempt to get her attention. It worked and she looked at the two men. A puzzled look crossed her face at the same time.
"Yes?"
"The Chief asked you when the baby is due. Didn't you hear him?"
"No. I'm sorry Chief. The baby is due on August 24, one month from now."
"That must be a very interesting article to have you so engrossed. What is it about?" Chief McConnikee asked.
"Clint Eastwood. He's my most favorite movie star."
Mike just rolled his eyes.
Part Three
Three Weeks Later
May 20 1974
Taffy sat in her bedroom, on the queen-sized bed she and Michael shared since they were married. Surrounding her were piles of unopened birthday cards and brightly colored packages all addressed to Clint Eastwood. She was busily writing down the names and addresses of the people who had sent gifts or cards that day in a small red notebook.
Mike came into the bedroom carrying a mug of hot tea for her and set it on the nightstand next to her side of the bed. Placing his hands on his hips, he surveyed what lie in front of him with more than a little distaste.
"I guess if I wanted to take a nap then I'm out of luck, right?" He said, mostly just to hear her reaction.
"Lie down on the couch in the livingroom." Taffy said, without even looking up from her notebook as she continued writing.
"The bill for the ad you put in the newspaper for all this came today." Mike said as he handed her a white envelope. She smiled at Mike, took it and without even opening it continued her writing.
"Are you going to read it?" He asked.
"I will later." She replied, still writing.
"So which one of us is going to pay for that?"
"I will. I have some money left over from when I bought your recliner."
"Can I ask another question?" Mike asked.
"Go ahead." Taffy replied as she continued with her writing, "I'm listening."
"Just who is going to deliver all these?"
Taffy stopped and looked up at Mike as he stood there looking down at her, hands on hips.
"I am and you are going to drive me there." She said as she put her notebook and pen to one side. Mike pushed some of the cards to one side and sat on the edge of the bed. Taffy leaned into kiss him.
"I love you Michael Stoker."
"You're just trying to soften me up so I will drive you." Taffy nibbled her way softly down his neck.
"Is it working?" she asked as she moved her hand under his sweatshirt and softly stroked his chest.
"I'll let you know in an hour!" he said, pushing the letters and parcels to the floor and pressed Taffy backward into the fluffy down pillows behind her.
