Fallen Heroes, Broken Wings
by Jade Stiger
"Come on Doug, back me up."
"You're just talking to your snitch, I can back you up from here." He settled back on the fender of the car, crossing his arms across his chest and frowning.
"Fine." Tom snapped. He pulled his jacket on and strode angrily into the dark alley. "Becket would probably bolt if he saw you anyway." he growled over his shoulder, not looking back.
Doug watched the young detective stalk down the alley and he tried to ignore a stab of nervous guilt as the shadows swallowed Tom's slender form. Doug shook his head and got up from his perch on the car and slowly followed the path his partner had taken into the trash littered alley. "Tom, wait up." he called.
"Doug!" he heard Tom scream. "Don't ..."
Doug heard the gunfire in the darkness and a hammering pain in his head sent him tumbling to the ground. He managed to get his gun from the holster only to have a foot connect with his hand and send the weapon spinning away. The lights of a car pulling into the alley speared the darkness. He fervently hoped that it was help but that hope was crushed when Scorpio stepped out of the vehicle and strode over to tower above him, laughing.
"Well, well, well. I only wanted the pretty one." Scorpio snapped his fingers and Tom was thrown to the ground near Doug. "But this is just too good an opportunity to pass up." Scorpio kicked Tom as the young man tried to get to his hand and knees.
Doug could hear Tom's ribs snap and his friend cried out, collapsing on the pavement.
"Say good-bye." Scorpio purred, straddling Doug and pointing a pistol at Doug.
Doug threw his hands up and felt the bullet pass through the palm of his left hand and then burn its way into his chest. Before Doug lost consciousness he saw Scorpio roughly drag Tom to the car and shove him in.

Scorpio shoved the detective into the sedan got in with him. He pushed Tom into the floorboard, snarling, "Lie still pretty boy, I'd hate to have to kill you so soon."
Tom lifted his head, leaning his cheek against the seat. "Who are you?" he asked painfully. "Why are you doing this?"
"I am called Scorpio. Your captain will know why and your dead partner knew why." Scorpio reached out, caressing Tom's face. "Perhaps I will tell you why later, my pretty one."
Tom's heart sank, knowing that Doug was dead and he himself would wish to be before the ordeal ended.

Doug tried to suck in a lungful of air and scream but his throat felt constricted
"Relax." he heard a soft voice say. "Just a minute and I'll have that out and you can breathe."
Doug opened his eyes to see a doctor standing beside the bed he was in. He gagged as the tube was removed. He tried to put his hands up but he couldn't move them.
"We had to restrain you. You were hallucinating and very uncooperative while we tried to treat you." the doctor said reaching for the straps that tied him to the bed. She smiled at him, "I think you'll behave now if we release you."
"What happened?" asked Doug, his voice rasping in his dry throat.
The doctor passed him a cup of water and he drank it quickly and held it out as she poured more.
"You were brought into the emergency room three days ago with gunshot wounds to the temple, left hand and left chest. If you hadn't deflected that last bullet with your hand you'd be talking to St. Peter instead of me."
"Three days?" Doug asked.
"Concussion, it can cause extended periods of unconsciousness." the doctor explained.
"Where's Tom?" Doug’s voice was cleared now.
"Tom?"
"His partner."
Doug and the doctor looked up as Captain Fuller walked in.
"Hey Penhall, how are you feeling?" the captain asked.
"Like I've been hit by a truck."
"Again?" Fuller teased.
"Well, worse than when I was hit by a truck." Doug grinned, returning Fuller's smile.
"I'm sorry, Doug. There's been no sign of Tom. We've been searching the whole damn town and not found anything." the captain's smile turned into a frown.
"It was Scorpio, Cap. He said he was wanting just Tom, what do you think he meant by that ?"
"Scorpio is a lunatic, there's no telling what he meant by that. If it meant anything at all."
Doug struggled to sit up in the bed, "It's my fault, I should have been with him."
"You can help Tom now by getting better and getting back on the street." Fuller put a hand on Doug's and Doug looked up, unshed tears sparkling in his eyes.
"We'll find him, I promise." the captain declared.

Tom regained consciousness with a startled jerk that make him scream.
The glow of the small lamp she carried barely illuminated the space in front of her but she was in
no hurry. Tom sat up and leaned painfully against the wall as she crouched next to him. As before, she never spoke a word to him, just handed him a cup of water and some cheese crackers. Tom took them and hungrily ate the handful of crackers and washed them down with the entire cup without taking a breath. He handed her back the cup and she stood up and left. The room went back to total darkness as the door locked behind her.
Tom had no idea how long he had been locked in the soundproof dark room. He had explored it well the first time he awoke and found the room to be twelve feet square with just one door and a toilet. The floor was wood and the walls concrete. The woman had come to feed him four times, today was five. He had learned a harsh lesson about her, she wouldn't talk to him and if he didn't take the food and water quickly, she would leave, taking it with her.
He had tried to stop her once and two muscle bound men had beaten him senseless for it. The beatings had become routine now. Tom's hands were handcuffed in front of him, the cuffs were never removed. He would be sitting in the dark or sleeping and the door would slam open and the bright flashlights would blind him. He would be dragged to the far wall where his bound hands would be hung on a hook and his dangling body would be pummeled until he screamed or lost consciousness. Tom had begged them for a reason but no one ever spoke to him. No one except Scorpio. The dark haired man with the scorpion tattoo on his right bicep would sometimes come in after Tom was beaten and he would stroke his hands across Tom's wounds, making the detective shake with fear and pain.
"There is a reason for all this, you know." Scorpio told him. "Your captain and your partner took my love, my darling Stephan and he died in that stinking jail alone and afraid." Scorpio lightly kissed Tom's bare shoulder. "Now I will do the same, you will die here, alone and afraid but it will take more time. I want Fuller to suffer as I did, knowing that he can't help you, knowing that you pray every moment that he will somehow manage to save you." The kisses continued across his throat and up to the corner of his mouth and Tom jerked from the contact. Scorpio laughed, "You'll make such a pretty corpse."

"It's been two weeks and we've got nothing!" Doug shouted. "What if he's killed Tom?"
"Doug, you've got to believe that Tom is alive.
Besides, if Scorpio had killed Tom, we'd have found his body." Fuller said.
"Why is he doing this?" Doug continued to rage. "Why take Tom? Why keep him?"
"I don't know for sure, but I think it may have something to do with Stephan LeCrox."
"LeCrox? That guy that died in lock-up last month?" Doug asked.
"LeCrox was Scorpio's lover. Scorpio took it pretty bad when he died, made a lot of threats."
"So he's doing this to get back at Chapel Street?" the young detective reasoned.
"Scorpio is a psychotic, there is no way to tell why he does what he does or what he'll do next."
"We've gotta find Tom before that guy does something to him."
"We're doing everything we can." said Fuller.
"It's not enough. Tom has nothing to do with LeCrox or Scorpio. We have to get Tom back."

Tom no longer struggled when they came in and beat him. He didn't care if they killed him. He'd lost all hope that he would ever escape or that anyone would ever find him. He had even stopped taking the food and water that the girl brought. She had tried to get him to take it but he let it fall from his hands, spill on the floor. He became weaker and sick. The room seemed colder and he lay on the floor, shivering and coughing.
Scorpio pulled the detective up, shaking him. "I won't let you die yet, boy." Scorpio picked Tom up and carried him out. The lights blinded Tom and he whimpered, trying to cover his eyes.
"Shhh." Scorpio whispered. He carried the detective upstairs to a bedroom. After lying the detective on the bed, he leaned over Tom, kissing the young man gently as he unlocked the cuffs and removed them.
Tom was too weak to resist as Scorpio continued to kiss him. Tom could not stop the other man from undressing him.
"So pretty." Scorpio's voice was low and husky as his hands caressed Tom's body.
"Don't." Tom moaned.
"Relax, I won't hurt you." Scorpio kissed down Tom's neck.
Tom's throat closed and he began to cry.
"It's all right, don't be afraid." Scorpio licked the tears from Tom's face.
"Let me die."
"Not yet. You're very strong. Much stronger than I thought. Do you know how long I've kept you?"
Tom tuned his face away.
"It's been exactly a month and your friends haven't come for you. They don't care about you or they would have come." Tom tried to let his mind go as Scorpio assaulted him, he was too weak and dehydrated to cry or struggle, he could only lie there helplessly as his body was invaded.

Fuller's phone rang, loud in the nearly empty office. The captain picked it up, "This is Fuller."
"Are you missing one of your guys?" a woman's voice asked.
"Who is this?" Fuller demanded angrily.
"Are you?" she persisted.
"You know I am or you wouldn't have called!" His angry reply caught the attention of the other Chapel Street detectives. They gathered silently around the captain's desk. Fuller carefully switched the call to the speaker phone.
"I hated you, that's why I agreed to help him." The woman's broke. "He said he needed me, that the kid wouldn't fight me because I'm a woman. I've watched him kill that boy little by little and I can't take it any more. If you hurry maybe you can save him. He's at 600 Atwood."
The captain looked stunned as the call ended with a loud click.
"Do you think it's a trap?" Judy asked.
"I'm going." Doug said.
"Let's check it out." Booker said.
Harry pulled out his gun, checking the clip; "I'm ready, let's go."
Fuller nodded, leading the way.
They quickly went to the parking lot and loaded up in the captain's car. Fuller drove to the address and they assembled behind the car, weapons ready.
"Hoffs, you're with me. Harry, you and Doug take the east door. Booker, your specialty, the fire escape on the north side. Let's try to take Scorpio alive." the captain ordered.
"You find Tom, yell and the rest of us will come on the double." Doug said.
"Move out." Fuller said, going to the front door.

Scorpio stood beside the bed, watching Tom as the young man struggled to breathe. Delirious, Tom cried out in a weak voice for his partner Doug.
"You are dying now." Scorpio pulled out a gun and pressed the muzzle against Tom's head. "I can make it easier for you."
"Don't." Tom cried.
"You've suffered a great deal. Let go and die. No one is coming for you"
"Fuller will." Tom murmured.
Scorpio's mouth twisty into an angry snarl and he drew back the gun and struck Tom across the face with the barrel, cutting the detective's cheek.
"He will never find you, not until it's too late." Scorpio growled at the now unconscious man.
He grabbed Tom by the wrist, pulling the young man onto the floor and dragged him out into the hall. The rough treatment opened the wound on Tom's wrist from the handcuffs making his arm slick with blood. Scorpio lost his grip and grabbed Tom's other arm, opening the wounds on that wrist too. When he couldn't keep a hold on the man's arms he grabbed a handful of Tom's dark hair and continued to drag him down the hall.

Judy and Fuller crept into the darkened building, pausing at the bottom of the stairs. Harry and Doug materialized out of the darkness.
"All clear back there Cap." Doug reported.
"Let's go up and meet Booker." Fuller suggested.
They went quietly up the stairs, a noise on the landing above made them all stop, pointing their
weapons upward.
"Hold it right there." Captain Fuller warned.
Judy aimed her flashlight toward the figure on the landing, illuminating Scorpio.
Scorpio reached out and flicked on the downstairs lights. "Well, if it isn't Captain Fuller and his
intrepid little band of avengers." Scorpio pulled Tom closer, aiming his gun at the detective's head. "I'll kill him if you don't back off."
"Where do you think you can go? You kill Hanson and we kill you." Doug growled.
"Penhall? I guess you're harder to kill than I thought. You and your partner have a lot in common,
I've tried for a month to kill him but he just won't die."
"Tom? Tom can you hear me?" Doug shouted. "Bastard, if you've killed him ...!"
Scorpio laughed, curling an arm around Tom and squeezing, making the detective's still tender ribs grate. Tom's head jerked back and a strangled cry escaped his bruised lips.
Doug started up the steps and Harry and Simon grabbed him, holding him back as Scorpio fired a round into the ceiling.
"Come on Penhall. Let's see if you can survive being shot this time." He aimed at Tom again. "Or perhaps you'd like to watch me blow your friend's brains out."
"No!" Doug cried.
"Let him go." Fuller demanded. "You can't escape."
"Really?" Scorpio stepped backward several paces, pulling Tom with him. "I think I can and I promise you, I will kill him if you try to stop me." He shoved the muzzle of his gun viciously under Tom's chin, raising the detective's head.
Fuller grabbed Doug as he tried once again to climb to the landing. "Wait, Doug." he warned.
"You better keep your pups on a leash, Fuller," Scorpio jerked Tom roughly, causing Tom to cry out again, weaker this time. "Otherwise you'll have one less bitch to worry about."
"Stop it!" Judy cried, "Stop hurting him and we'll let you go!"
"You let me go and I'll leave him for you." Scorpio bargained.
The window on the landing shattered as Booker jumped through it, "Drop the gun, you son of bitch or I'll blow your damn head off!"
Scorpio spun around, loosing his grip on Tom and the detective fell against the banister.
Scorpio dropped the gun and raised his hands as the others rushed up the stairs. Booker was on him in an instant, pinning him down and cuffing his hands behind his back.
"Tom, are you all right?" Doug asked, reaching for his friend.
Tom jerked away, screaming. "No! Don't !"
"Tom?" Judy slowly stepped toward him. "It's all right. We're here to help you."
"No ! No, you're not! You never came!" Tom shouted. "You left me! You let me die!" he climbed over the banister, holding on with one blood-slicked hand.
"Tom, you're safe." Fuller said holding a hand out toward Tom. "Come back here with us."
"No. You're going to hurt me." Tom's eyes were wild as he stared back at them.
"It's Doug." Penhall took a step toward his partner.
"I'm your friend Tom, remember?"
"Doug's dead, I saw it ... I saw him, he's dead." Tom stuttered.
"Tom where are you going?" Loki asked softly.
Tom looked down, "I just want to go home ..."
The captain holstered his gun and held his hands out to the young man, "I'll take you home." He walked slowly toward Tom. "Will you let us help you?"
Tom's eyes grew frightened and he leaned out over the empty space. "I'm so tired of being scared." He let go and fell.
Loki dived for Tom, catching Tom's arm but losing his grip on the detective's blood slicked wrist. Loki scrabbled for a handhold on Tom's waistband, snagging his fingers in the jeans belt loops.
"No!" Doug reached out dragging both of the men back onto the landing, the three fell in a tangled heap on the carpet.
Fuller called for an ambulance as the others gathered around their fallen friend.
Doug pushed the others back and gathered his partners' body into his arms. "Tom?"
Tom's unblinking eyes stared back, large and dark.
"Is he ..." Judy sighed.
Doug's fingers sought and found a pulse pounding in the hollow of Tom's throat. "He's alive."
