History: Agt. Scully first encountered Kritschgau in the lab of Dr. Vitagliano. Kritschgau fled the lab with ice cores brought to Dr. Vitagliano for analysis by Agt. Scully. When Agt. Scully followed Kritschgau into a nearby stairwell, he assaulted her and knocked her down the stairs. Through analysis of fingerprints found in the stairwell, Agt. Scully was able to identify Kritschgau and locate him at his place of work, the Pentagon Research Division in Sethsburg, Virginia.

Kritschgau then revealed to Agt. Scully a story that turned all the work she and Agt. Mulder had done in four years on its head. He detailed to Agts. Mulder and Scully how they had been played in a complex scheme to promote false beliefs in extraterrestrial life. The purpose of this scheme was to divert attention from the dubious and unregulated practices of the U.S. military. Kritschgau asserted that he was only now coming forward because his son had fallen ill during the Gulf War.
