They were greeted by a short, fragile- looking woman who held out her hand with a shy smile. "Hello Mrs. Laiceps. My name is Agent Doggett. This is Agent Reyes and Agent Scully. You called the FBI about a disturbance?" She smiled and replied "Yes Mr. Doggett. A few days ago an intruder entered the house and attacked my daughter. I was in the garden and heard some screams. I rushed in and caught sight of a young girl rushing into the other room. I followed her and..." she drifted off. "Yes?" said Scully softly. "She wasn't there. She had disappeared." Doggett looked at her disbelievingly. "And where was your daughter when all of this happened?" "Well, the intruder had attacked her and I luckily scared her off before she could seriously harm my daughter. Reyes took a step forward. "Could we speak to your daughter?" Mrs. Laiceps paused and then called out. "Propheci! Propheci!" Scully and Reyes exchanged curious looks. Almost immediately Propheci appeared at the door. She was a small girl of about 14 Her dark eyes were wide and full of wisdom. Her jet-black hair fell neatly at her shoulders. Doggett held out his hand. "Nice to meet you Propheci." The girl took his hand and nodded her head, her eyes fixed on his. Mrs. Laiceps watched the situation with a worried gaze. "If you don't mind, could we speak to Propheci on her own?" asked Scully politely. Mrs. Laiceps frowned and scratched her head. "Alright, but not for too long. She is still quite traumatised." She then glanced once more at her daughter before walking out of the room. There was a silence as the Agents watched Propheci carefully. There was something about her deep, dark eyes which entranced them. Finally Reyes spoke up. "Would you like to tell us what happened?" Propheci looked at her. "There isn't much to tell." She said with a soft voice. "Someone came into our house...and she grabbed hold of me, like she was trying to tell me something. Then Mum came in and scared her off." "Did you get a look at her face?" asked Scully. Propheci frowned. "No, not really. It all happened so fast." "So you saw nothing? What colour was her hair?" asked Doggett. "I don't know. She was wearing a hat." "What about her eyes, her features?" Propheci looked down to the ground. "I didn't see." "Surely you would have.." he was interrupted by Reyes' hand on his arm. She looked at him as if to say 'Leave it.' She then walked up to Propheci and put her hand on her shoulder. "It's O.K. Just try and remember what you can." Propheci suddenly darted her head up and stared at Reyes. "Do you have a boyfriend?" she asked suddenly. Reyes looked uncomfortable. "What's that got to do with.." "You should ask him. Don't put it off or he will find someone else." Reyes smiled. "What are you talking about, Hun?" "You know he likes her. I can feel your constant pain. You go to work every day, never once getting him out of your mind, like a drug. You don't know how to stop it. You wish he had eyes for you." Reyes stared at her and then felt a shiver down her spine. She took a few steps backwards, looking embarrassed. Her gaze avoided Doggett at all costs. Doggett looked curious, but slightly irritated. "Listen, as much as we would love to talk about Monica's personal life, you seem to have avoided the subject of your attacker Propheci." Propheci looked up and stared deep into Doggett's eyes. "Don't do this to yourself, John." "How did you know-" "She doesn't have yes for you. She never will. You know that. Why are you fooling yourself? I can feel your heart beating for her but if only you knew the other. The other beating heart. It's beating for you, John. Why don't you listen to it? You'll be happier for it." Doggett paused, staring curiously at the girl, not knowing what to say. She can't know about his love for Scully, she just can't, he thought. Or could she? Scully stood watching the situation. What was that girl talking about? Whatever it was must have hit a nerve in the too awkward looking agents in front of her. Something urged her to step forward and get a piece of the action. As soon as Scully thought this, Propheci walked up to her and touched her on the hand. She then instantly stared into Scully's wondering eyes. "You've got it all sorted, haven't you?" said Propheci. "But I wouldn't be so sure. You two have got together but you don't even know where he is or if you'll ever see him again. You won't if you don't go and find him soon. Follow your heart, Agent Scully. It's time you put your happiness first. After all you two are soul mates." Scully breathed deeply. Those words, soul mates. How often had she used them when thinking of her and Mulder. How did Propheci know that? Scully stared into her dark eyes. She felt as if the girl was peering into her soul. Suddenly the door opened. "Have you finished?" asked Mrs. Laiceps, peering round the door. "It's just that I'm sure Propheci is very tired." "Yes we have." Said Doggett, looking flushed. Propheci smiled at the agents and walked out. Something urged Scully to ask Mrs. Laiceps a question. "Did you get to see the girl attacker?" Mrs. Laiceps looked uncomfortable. "Well sort of. But you wouldn't believe me so never mind." "Try me." Said Scully. "Well the girl, she looked exactly like Propheci. A spitting image actually." Doggett frowned, as did Reyes, but Scully nodded, pondering. "Mrs. Laiceps, has Propheci always been this...erm....strange?" The woman took a deep breath. "Well, yes. Ever since birth she has always been unique. She always seems to know about people, about their deepest darkest secrets. And she makes no delay in telling them so." "Is it almost as if she can see into the future lives of these people?" asked Scully. "Erm..yes. But that's impossible." "It's just that what she said to me was so accurate. She talked about me and Mulder and she's never met me before." "Yes, but she never used his name, did she?" said Reyes. "She used mine though." Thought Doggett aloud. After long consideration, Scully said "What if that girl, that intruder, was in fact Propheci, but it was herself from the future. It would explain how she knew all about what would happen to us if we didn't make certain decisions." There was a silence before Mrs. Laiceps laughed a worried laugh. "Agent Scully, I know you are a qualified FBI agent and I'm sure you have your own theories, but take a listen to yourself! For goodness sake, you're talking nonsense! "She's right, Scully." Said Doggett. Scully turned to him. "Fine, if I'm talking nonsense then whatever she said to you must also be nonsense. Is that true Agent Doggett?" Doggett stared at her. Of course it wasn't nonsense. He was so in love with Agent Scully it wasn't funny. But how on earth could he tell her that? And anyway what was that business about the other beating heart. That must surely be nonsense, he thought. "She was just making things up to get attention. I see it all the time." He said. Scully looked disgruntled and turned to Reyes. "How about you?" Reyes eyes Doggett. What Propheci had said had scared her. She hadn't realised it before, but she was head over heels in love with the man. But how on earth was she going to tell him when all he could think about was Scully? "Doggett's right. It was a load of nonsense." Scully sighed, as she watched Mrs. Laiceps leave the room. The agents then walked out of the house. "What's going to happen about the intruder?" asked Reyes. "Most likely it was made up to be worse than it was. But we'll send other FBI agents to investigate as this....err.. isn't an X-File." replied Doggett. But Scully wasn't listening. She knew she was right. Propheci had described her relationship with Mulder to a T. And she was trying to warn her to not lose him. Scully could see the wisdom in that girl and she realised that she had to take her advice. She was not going to lose Mulder again. It was obvious that Propheci was getting information from somewhere, and it was obvious that the intruder had something to do with it. Scully suspected that the future Propheci was fed up of travelling to and fro as a kind of messenger and that was why she "attacked" her. But Scully was glad she had met Propheci, if only to make her realise how important Mulder was to her. Why couldn't the other agents see it? Suddenly it struck Scully. No one had seemed to notice Propheci's peculiar name. Yes, her Christian name was very strange, obviously something to do with her fortune-telling, but that was not what Scully was thinking about. Her surname, her surname was what entranced Scully. It summed up what Mulder meant to her, like a sign to show her what was most important to her. For Scully had also used this word when thinking of Mulder many a time. Not Laiceps, but Special. ***********The End************** ### The End ###
