Beneath the Cascade

by Winds-of-Dawn
~Moonridge, July 2003~

The moon rises over the ridge,
the wolf yawns.
The panther blinks and resumes grooming.

Over the city the sentinel stands guard,
faithful guide steady at his side.

Beneath the shadowy cascade of starlight,
forgotten lie the clamors of the day.
Rest all from their weary labors,
the never-ending chase, the unrewarding toil.
Let the broken heart be cleansed with tears afresh,
and torn bonds be knit anew with tendrils of hope.
Explosive grief, crashes of will,
stealing despair, ravaging pain,
misplaced trust and murderous grind;
tilt at the windmill, scoop the sea with a hand.
Running feet, sirens flashing,
chattering old ladies and students rushing to class,
crying toddlers, car horns' blare,
ebb and flow of the shopping crowd,
fountain misting a sunlit lawn.
Rest all, if for a moment.

For over the city the sentinel stands guard,
his faithful guide steady at his side.

The moon rises over the ridge,
the wolf blinks.
The panther yawns and keeps grooming.

This is for DebraC, who won it in the 2003 Moonridge Auction, held for the benefit of Moonridge Animal Park. All proceeds from the auction is donated to the Moonridge Animal Park in Garett Maggart's name.

My heartfelt thanks to DebraC for being so encouraging and enthusiastic about this project, even while I meandered off on a tangent. Thank you also to Barb for brainstorming ideas for some of the lines, and to Sarah for help in coming up with the title.

The lovely pics on this page are the work of the talented Lady Grey, who also writes Stargate SG-1 fics. Click on the pics for larger versions.

Last but most important, my deepest appreciation and gratitude to Garett Maggart and Richard Burgi, for bringing Blair and Jim alive for us. Their talent, dedication, grace and generosity is an inspiration for all of us.
