Prior Robert had praised him for his "renewed dedication to his prayers," but it amused Cadfael to imagine what his reaction would be if the man had known exactly /why/ he had been spending more time on his knees. Though most days Cadfael was reconciled to the blood he had spilled during the Crusades, he was again spending hours on his knees in the sanctuary, a penitent for a new sin. For though he did not act on them, his thoughts of Hugh of Beringar were of a love not sanctioned by God and the church.
