Bernard closed the office door behind him soundlessly. He'd go back to the staff Christmas party and make their excuses for the Prime Minister and Sir Humphrey. They'd been working flat out trying to clear the PM's desk so that he could have Christmas and Boxing Days completely free to spend with his wife and daughter. It was a measure of how exhausted the two must've been, then, that Bernard had found them sitting asleep on the rather uncomfortable sofa in the PM's office with a stack of half-finished work sitting in front of them. He'd give them an hour or so before he knocked and woke them up, it was probably the best Christmas present he could give them.
