Never an Absolution

I sit here, by your side, hoping you'll pull through
like so many times before.
God, I am such a fool.
Why did I shut you out?
Now I'll never get the chance to tell you.
Tell you what?
I don't know.
I've never experienced this before.
Oh, sure, I've experienced other forms of it.
But never this intensity.
Never this happiness.
Never this vulnerability.
I've never been loved.
Until you.
You loved me from the moment we met,
though you tried to hide it.
I kept running off and nearly getting myself killed,
believing that you would make the first move.
Never thought of myself as a coward, but that's
what I am.
A stupid, lovesick coward.
I thought my "luck" with my lovelife would always last,
that it'll be composed of weekend or one-night stands.
Boy, was I ever wrong.
Luck is never an absolution.
But love is.
I love you, my friend.
Oh God, your heart's racing.
Your hand's gotten one of mine somehow.
You're waking up!
Shit, you've heard everything.
You look me in the eye and smile.
"I love you too," is all that you say.
Then you are gone.
I am truly alone now.
Oh god, this horrible emptiness inside me.
