He Broke It Off

What's a person to do?
I could yell, scream, and throw a tantrum.
Or.
I could cry; small tears sliding down my face with little sound, maybe a good loud wail
Or.
I could make him pay; money, sweat and tears, maybe even pain.
Then I look into his face.
I see the "I'm sorry" followed so closely by "I really tried"
His hands holding the two angel statues…holding them out to me.
His eyes slowly moved down to the single broken wing in pieces on the floor.
As I stare down at the broken pieces my mind rewinds to the beginning of the scene.
The barking
The scurry of claws on the floor
The ball of hair jumping for the chair back, onto the shelf and continuing across as everything in the cat's way moved from its place of safety heading for the floor.
His outstretched hands catching first one then the other…barely keeping hold.
So he pulled them to his body in a fight to keep hold of them both.
To keep them both safe…one wing hitting into the other before he can stop it.
The glass wing falling, hitting, and shattering into pieces
As the dog and cat peek out from under the couch…trying to hide from me.
A breath later, I look up.
There he stands my hero!
So maybe the wing did break off,
Maybe it's in pieces,
The important thing is he tried to save them because he knew how much they meant to me.
I step over the pieces, take the angels from him and set them back on the shelf.
Then I reward my hero for his valiant effort.
The rest…I'll deal with later!
