Waiting.
That was all. It comprised and erased everything else. Nothing more existed in his world anymore.
Just waiting.
He looked out the single barred window of his cell and waited. Waited for the junior priest to come for him.
It had been two days since his world ended. Two days since his failure, the death of his guide in battle. He had wailed against the injustice of it all, had wanted to rush after his guide to the next world, to the next life, but his guide's comrades had stopped him. Such was not done. The traditions had to be followed.
So he waited.
The preparations would be done by now, the rituals would soon be over. The body prepared, the prayers recited, the chants sang and the pyre built. They would soon come for him and he could at last join his guide.
So he waited.
