She watched until the metal became indistinct from the surrounding stars. She wasn't sure she would miss him, and she felt more guilty for that than anything she had done. When she turned to go, she was startled to come face to face with Chakotay. He had been watching her for how long? "Do you think he will come back?" He asked. "No," she said, with a certainty that rarely came to her these days. "A shame," he replied, almost holding her gaze. "I think he made you happy." --- It was a long ride back to Devore space, and Kashyk had Kathryn Janeway's lips to consider. He admired her pragmatism. Her practicality. He admired the way he couldn't tell whether her kisses were purely business, or tinged with something more. On Devore, she would have risen far above the rank of Inspector. On Devore, he would have been proud to attend commissions with her. On Devore, he could imagine her. . . He resettled in his seat. It was a long ride back to Devore space, and Kashyk had Kathryn Janeway's lips to consider. Still, it was a shame. --- The End
