May I call you Dana?" said the psychiatrist. Scully put on a smile. "Of course" She really didn't want to be here. Skinner had made her come. "Everyone's doing it these days!" he had said. But what was the point? She wasn't going to tell this weird woman anything anyway. Scully only talked to people she trusted. Like Mulder. "So, how do you get along with your partner, Agent Mulder?" That was amazing. It was as if she had read Scully's mind. It was in fact slightly creepy and Scully didn't like it. "Fine" She said shortly. "You must work very closely," the woman was staring at Scully now with deep blue eyes. Scully felt uncomfortable. It was as if she could see right through her. "We're very good friends." "Are you sure there is nothing else you want to tell me?" Scully took a deep breath. She got the feeling that the psychiatrist could see her aching heart. How day after day she had to keep her feelings bottled up inside her. Her feelings for Mulder. How she loved him more than anything else in the world. "No." ** Suddenly, the door burst wide open. It was Mulder. He stood still for a moment staring from Scully to the psychiatrist back to Scully again. "Scully, what are you doing? I didn't know where you were; I thought you were in trouble. Then Skinner said you were seeing a shrink!" "Excuse me, but this is a private consultation. If you wouldn't mind leaving?" The psychiatrist's eyes narrowed as she looked at Mulder. Scully leapt up and gave Mulder a look that said "Go!" Mulder shrugged and walked out of the room. "I'm very sorry.....one of my friends...a bit over protective... you know." she murmured quickly. She knew that any minute now those deep blue eyes would put two and two together and find out that was Mulder. Scully didn't want this to happen. she didn't know how, but this woman knew too much. Way too much about Scully and her feelings. She had to get out of here. "Erm..I'm sorry but I have to go... I hope you don't mind" "Of course not," said the woman slowly. Scully began to walk out of the room. She could feel the woman's penetrating gaze on the back of her neck. "After all I will be seeing you again very soon." Only after Scully had left the room to find an impatient Mulder waiting outside, did the woman's words actually seep in. What on earth did she mean by that? Scully turned and hurried back into the office. "Excuse me, but..." she stopped, mid sentence. The woman was gone. ** Mulder drove his car into the parking lot and sighed. He didn't know what was going on with Scully. She was acting really weird lately, what with going to a shrink and keeping it from Mulder. Maybe he should have a talk to her. Yes that's what he would do. Get it out in the open. He walked into the building, going over in his head what he was going to say. He realised his hands were sweaty. 'Don't be stupid' he told himself. 'It's only Scully' He had reached Scully' office. Through the frosted glass he could see shadows of people inside but couldn't think who they all were. 'Here go's' he muttered. He knocked twice on the door and opened it. He stopped abruptly. Scully was in the office in mid-hug with a strange man! Twinges of jealousy writhed through Mulder but he just stood there and managed a forced smile. "Morning Scully!" Scully immediately sprung apart from the other man and blushed. "Hi Mulder!" she grinned. "This is an old friend of mine, Simon." She pointed to the rather embarrassed looking man beside her. That was strange, thought Mulder. I thought I knew all of Scully's friends and yet I have never seen him before. Mulder shoved a stiff arm forward and shook hands with him, perhaps a little too tightly. Suddenly he realised he was glaring at him and straightened up, pushing his hand through his hair. It was an awkward silence. "Erm...Me and Dana go back a long time actually. she's told me a lot about you, Fox." Mulder flinched. He didn't like this stranger using his first name. Why was Scully allowing this idiot into her office? They must be really close. Suddenly Mulder saw something in Simon's eyes which he recognised. The way in which he crinkled them up when he smiled. It was familiar. Perhaps Mulder did know him after all. ** Mulder mumbled, "Well, I have some work to do" and walked out of the room. Scully felt a strange aching inside her. But why should she feel guilty? It wasn't as if she and Mulder were going out or anything. Why shouldn't she see old friends? After all that's all they were. Just friends. Scully could feel eyes on her so she turned around quickly. Simon was gazing at her, like he was in a dream. "Oh sorry Simon. I forgot you were there! Do you feel like going to get a coffee?" Simon nodded in agreement and followed Scully out of the office. As they past Mulder's desk, Scully said "Mulder.." but he was so engrossed in his work she decided to leave it. Once they were outside, Scully tried to make conversation. "So Simon, do you still work at that managing firm?" Simon looked confused for a second, but then smiled and nodded. "Yes,I do." "Well how's it coming along?" asked Scully. "Oh, erm...really well, yes..umm..I am really enjoying it" he replied. Scully frowned. "But I thought you said you hated it last time I spoke to you!" Simon looked worried, quickly said "Oh look, there's the coffee house" and rushed over to it, leaving Scully to trail after him. ** As they walked up to the counter, they saw Mulder sitting in the corner, sipping a coffee. To Scully's surprise she almost felt relieved and called "Mulder, come and join us!" Mulder looked up and smiled as he saw Scully. He, however did not look as pleased when he caught sight of Simon, but joined them anyway. Simon had fixed his eyes on the counter and did not look at Mulder. "So what are you love birds up to now?" Mulder said, sarcastically. "Nothing much" said Scully. It really annoyed her when Mulder called her and Simon things like that. They were just old friends and nothing more. She decided to change the subject. "Simon and I were just discussing his current job, weren't we Simon?..Simon? Simon's chair was empty. Scully frowned. "I wonder where he went?" "No idea" said Mulder, looking a bit happier. "I'd better go and find him." she said, looking around. And with that she rushed out of the cafe. Mulder, however, remained. He looked slightly disgruntled, as he had never had that chat he wanted with Scully. And it was all Simon's fault. Mulder decided he would find out more about Simon. How old he was, exactly who he really was. After all he was another potential rival for Scully. And Mulder didn't like that idea at all. ** The next day Scully arrived at work. She felt exhausted. She hadn't had a wink of sleep and something was still pestering the back of her mind. Where had Simon gone? When she had left the cafe the day before she had searched high and low for him but he was nowhere to be seen. "Scully..Scully!!" Scully focused her tired eyes on to the person in front of her. It was Mulder and it looked as though he had been up all night too. "Scully? Are you even listening to me?" He looked at her curiously. "Yes, what is it Mulder?" she said, irritably. "I just thought you should know. It's about Simon. He's not who he says he is." Scully frowned. "What do you mean?" "I mean that I was just browsing through the web..." Scully raised an eyebrow. "Just browsing were you?" Mulder coughed. "Yes..and I came across Simon's managing firm. Anyway, he doesn't work for it. He hasn't for six years." Scully combed her hand through her hair. "Mulder, are you sure you got this right, I mean..." "Yes I'm sure!" said Mulder, angrily. "Look, I wouldn't make this sort of thing up, you know!" Scully knew he wouldn't. It was just that she was so tired and she couldn't deal with this sort of thing now. "Look we'll talk about this another time, O.K? I've got a splitting headache and I'm going home to rest. I should have never come in today." she said quietly and headed off. Mulder looked briefly concerned but was still annoyed with her so he muttered "Fine." and walked off. ** Scully pushed her key through her door and weakly pushed against it to open it. Her eyes widened with horror. Someone had been in her flat. Scully's heart beat fast. She closed her hands around her gun and carefully walked into her *apartment*. A small wooden table was on its side and the light was on. Whoever it was was gone and had taken Scully's silver pendent and loads of photos of her. What kind of sick weirdo was this? Scully thought as she searched through her drawers. Nothing else was missing. She reached for the phone and her fingers automatically dialled Mulder's number. She stopped herself. What was she doing? If she told Mulder about this, he would say it was Simon or something. No, she wouldn't tell him. Anyway what could he do? Mulder sat on his bed with his head in his hands. He sighed loudly. He didn't know what was happening between him and Scully. It seemed they ever since Simon had come on to the scene, Scully wouldn't listen to Mulder or talk to him. And now this. Mulder had been burgled. It wasn't serious. Just a few pictures had been taken. It was weird though, he thought, how they were all of Scully. Probably, that psycho, Simon did it. But why would he want pictures of her. Maybe he should tell Scully. But, no, thought Mulder, I know what she'd say. 'Stop going on about Simon' she'd think he was making it all up. What was the point. He'd have to just not tell her. It wasn't important anyway. ** The next day, Mulder tried to avoid Scully as far as possible, but seeing as they worked together and were partners and had never got through a day before without saying anything to each other, this was relatively impossible. Before long, Mulder entered a lift and sure enough, he looked up to find an awkward looking Scully standing in front of him. "Errr... hi!" she mumbled. "Listen" they both said at the same time. They chuckled nervously. Then Mulder broke the silence. "Look, I'm sorry about before. I shouldn't have been checking out your friends. I know its none of my business." "Its O.K" replied Scully. "I was tired. I snapped. Let's forget it shall we?" "Sure" said Mulder, smiling. They were just about to hug when the lift door opened with a ping. "After you" said Mulder. They walked down the corridor. Suddenly Mulder said, "Scully, has anything strange happened at your house?" Scully narrowed her eyes. "Strange?" "Yeah." "No" said Scully quickly, remembering her promise to herself not to say a word. "Oh, O.K" said Mulder, still eyeing Scully suspiciously. He had to find out if Scully had been burgled or not but he knew she wouldn't lose face by telling him and risking it being Simon. Suddenly a brainwave struck Mulder. "Scully, can I see your FBI tag?" he asked innocently. "What? Why would you want to see that?" Scully replied. "Look, I just need to see it." It looked urgent so Scully sighed and got out her tag. The picture of her was gone. Mulder couldn't help smiling as he watched the bewildered Scully try and look normal. "Ermm.. I can explain this!" "Look, Scully I've been burgled too. He took all the pictures I owned of you." Scully stared at him. 'Simon' they both thought. Suddenly a police officer approached them saying, "Excuse me, Agent Scully, but I thought you might like to know. We've had a breakthrough in the case." "I'm listening," said Scully. "Well, there are many witnesses who saw someone waiting outside your apartment looking suspicious, at the time you went to work and then the suspect was seen later, driving off, supposedly with your pictures." Mulder looked at Sully. "Looks like we've caught our man." he said. The policeman looked puzzled. "Sorry, sir, I think you've got it wrong. You see we've had an artists impression done and...well take a look for yourselves." Mulder and Scully peered at the picture. Scully gasped. It was the psychiatrist. ** Scully stared at the picture. The deep, blue eyes stared back. The policeman stuttered, "I've got to go now" and walked off but Mulder and Scully remained, motionless. "I don't know what's going on," said Scully,"but I'm going to get to the bottom of this." And with that she turned and rushed out of the building. "Scully, wait" cried Mulder. But she had already gone. Scully stood outside the psychiatrist's hospital. To think that she actually sat down and chatted with the person who later broke into her house sent a shiver down her spine. Scully straightened herself up and walked in. At the desk was a young woman, who looked very pale. Scully tried to speak to her, but she proceeded to shake her head nervously and dart her eyes around. In the end Scully gave up and turned for the door. Mulder was standing in the doorway. Scully, quite surprised to see he had got here so fast, walked up to him, saying, "Mulder, what are you doing here?" "Oh, I was just passing.." he said. "Oh, O.K. Well, maybe you can help me find this mysterious psychiatrist." Mulder nodded and walked up to the desk. "Excuse me, but what are the names of the people who work here?" The woman went pale again and stared at the floor. "I said, what are their names?" said Mulder, his eyes narrowing. The woman remained silent and started to organise some papers with her trembling hands. "ANSWER ME!" shouted Mulder, angrily. He threw his hands forward and clutched the terrified woman's shoulders. He then shook her, violently, shouting "ANSWER ME!! ANSWER ME!!" Scully stared at him. "Mulder, stop it! Mulder!" she screamed trying to pull him off but he was too strong and angrily pushed Scully to the ground. Scully peered up, her eyes full of tears. "Please Mulder" she sobbed. Suddenly his angry face got calmer and he removed his hands from the woman, who cowered into a corner, sobbing with pain. The fire in Mulder's eyes was replaced with softness and he walked over to Scully, offering his hand. Still terrified, Scully slowly took it and got up. She stared at the now perfectly normal Mulder. What on earth had just happened? Suddenly Scully's phone rang. She took two deep breaths to calm herself down and, her eyes still fixed on Mulder, proceeded to answer it. "Hello?" she croaked. "Scully! Where are you? I've been looking everywhere for you since you left! I thought you had got lost or something! Scully?...Scully!" Scully froze, her hands beginning to shake. It was Mulder's voice. ** Scully slowly fixed her eyes on the man in front of her. It was definitely Mulder, but she knew Mulder's voice too well. She felt torn, not knowing which one was real. She thought this could all be a dream but the feeling of utter helplessness that was buried inside her was too strong to be fake. "Scully, Scully, answer me!!" the voice called her. Scully restrained herself and spoke with a low whisper. "Mulder...Mulder is that you?" "Of course it is! Who else would it be? What's wrong? What's happened?" At that moment the Mulder standing in front of her stared curiously at her, suspecting something. "Listen, Mulder. I'm in the...." The man snatched the phone from Scully's hand and slowly crushed it into tiny little pieces. Scully screamed "Mulder!" But it was too late. The man smiled an evil smile at her (Continued in part 2)
