Stories

These stories have been written for various reasons … inspiration, boredom, because I had to … but they have one thing in common. I have put them here online for you to read at your leisure.

Under the stories I have the explanation for them, when they were created and under what circumstances.

My stories

"There have been great societies that did not use the wheel, but there have been no societies that did not tell stories."
-- Ursula Le Guin

The Library [ read ] 5kb (added 2002.03.10)
Inspired while I was in the library looking for something more to read. I am told that it's a horror retelling of "The Goose Who Laid the Golden Eggs". Not exactly for the faint-hearted.

Beginning of Stillness [ read ] 6kb (added 2002.03.10)
A snippet which flowed into my head after reading a Jonathan Carroll novel. What is it that you are most afraid of? This is my answer, in a way.

The Pink Pen [ read ] 4kb
I wrote this at the Logan Art Gallery one day while bored using, funnily enough, a pen with pink ink. Not overly long, it follows the life of a pink pen as it tells it. Maybe I should find more things to keep myself occupied!

Misconceptions [ read ] 3kb
I was asked to "write a short story with psychology in it" and so, I did. It's not the type of in-your-face psychology you expect; I bet that you are thinking Freud. If you are, sorry to disappoint you, but I chose another, yet as interesting, psychology line; social psychology. Indeed, the bystander phenomena is interesting. One would never know how one would behave in similar circumstances.

Train Windows [ read ] 8kb
One day, sitting in the train, I was struck by the reflections of the people in the train in the windows, and saw something weird. Turning around, it wasn't there of course, and I thought that I was seeing things. In a lecture a week later, the Psychopathology lecturer was talking about how alcoholics see things. The two put together inspired this story -- but it as yet needs polishing.

Emotion [ read ] 3kb
Ah, emotion. For homework in the Logan Writers' Guild, Inc., we were asked to do a piece titled "Emotion", starting with the line "I had to laugh when …", no longer than 300 words. I got bagged for this piece, including the comments "too third person", "not descriptive enough", "too descriptive", "What's a Citadel?" and other equally useful comments.

Sky Lord [ read ] 3kb
I wrote this one many years ago during high school, for which we were asked to write a descriptive piece. A descriptive piece, with no need for a storyline behind it, but I couldn't resist, and this is what resulted. I invented a storm, and then handed this in, for which I received full marks and had it read out in front of the classroom. She told everyone "this is an example of excellent work", making all those who hadn't done "excellent work" hate me for the rest of the day.

Evening Storm [ read ] 4kb
Descriptive piece of a storm—something done for high school. I have since revamped it considerably—I didn't feel that it was done properly, added to which, kept switching between past and present tense. No, not done that well at all. See if you like it.

Hunger Pangs [ read ] 4kb
Some of the stupid exercises we are given in the LWG. I mean, really. Write a story that contains Vegemite in it. Okay, sure, I can do that. Yeah, I can do that. I went and used Vegemite as a trap. For non-Australians: Vegemite is this disgusting black sludgy stuff that most Australians like for some unknown reason. You spread it on bread and make sandwiches with the it.
