Summary: In its own unexpected ways, the Hyperion Hotel remains the last help for the hopeless in the wasteland once known as L.A. Spoilers: BtVS season 6, AtS season 3
Rec: Tavia says: 'As Time Goes By' is one of the best pastiches (in this case of that great film 'Casablanca') I've ever read in any fandom. The setting is bleak but believable. The characterization manages to stay true to the series, despite the fact that the plot stays quite close to the film. In my opinion, the story captures the best of both the series and the film. Set in the near future, with spoilers for early seasons 6 and 3 of BtVS and Angel, respectively. Rating PG, though readers of a nervous disposition might like to note that it's dark in places
The following characters are the property of Joss Whedon, David Greenwalt, Mutant Enemy Productions, 20th Century Fox, etc., etc. They are used without permission, intent of infringement or expectation of profit. I do not use relationship, character-death or other warnings; you read the fic, you take your chances.
This story is set six years from now and may contain spoilers for anything that has happened through early Season Three ATS and Season Six BTVS. After that, things begin to go AU. You'll be able to tell where canon is and is not in force. Also, if you haven't watched "Casablanca" before -- well, first of all, what HAVE you been doing with yourself? Go rent it! If you choose to read this first, you'll be spoiled for the movie. (Not that anything actually spoils "Casablanca.")
Not long after I conceived of this idea, I remembered hearing that it had been done before, albeit in XF fandom, not ATS. After some pondering, I decided not to read "Letters of Transit" by Loch Ness before writing this story. I am confident that the differences between the series, sets of characters and dilemmas we were each dealing with will make the resulting stories equally different. Whatever similarities we may have are undoubtedly the result of our shared source material -- but if there's anything more worth sharing, I don't know what it is.
All thanks to beta-readers Rheanna (whose contribution here goes beyond that of a beta reader; she could more accurately be called "executive producer"), Mariner and everyone at the Angel Fanfic Workshop; thanks also to Jesse, who braved the mall with me the day after Thanksgiving to discover a clock. As ever, feedback is greatly appreciated
