Title: Heatwave Author: RPcrazy Classification: SXR Spoilers: Season 9 Rating: NC-17 - language, graphic sex scenes Keywords: Doggett/Reyes Romance/Smut, case file. Summary: Doggett and Reyes investigate a town in Minnesota experiencing a very unusual phenomenon. They must work closely, very closely, very very closely to discover the cause. Get the hint? You all know me by now. Chapter One Basement Office "John, I thought you switched on the fan a moment ago?" He looked up to the still dormant ceiling fan then across to the switch. "I did." "Not something else broken in this place! Tell me John does maintenance ever come down here or is our office not even on their building plans?" Reyes looked a little annoyed as she fanned herself with her makeshift paper fan. A heatwave had hit the city and Doggett and Reyes were in their office doing routine paperwork in muggy heat without air conditioning. They'd already discarded as much clothing as they could safely get away with in each other's presence. If she was home under the same conditions Reyes would be down to her underwear by now but she new her partner would be a little distracted by this so there she was with pants and a shirt unbuttoned far enough to let in a little air. Her socks and shoes had long been discarded. Doggett leaned over his desk writing and reading. He didn't seem to be as concerned about the heat as she but had taken off his tie and unbuttoned a couple of shirt buttons too. "Let me check." Doggett got out of his chair and flicked the switch again. "Looks like it's dead." Reyes, near the end of her tether climbed on the table and tried to reach the fan to give it a push manually. "What are you doing Monica?" "Maybe it's just stuck for some reason." She stretched precariously at the table's edge as Doggett walked over to her. "Monica, get down, you could fall. Come on I'll go find maintenance and get this fixed. We can't work under these conditions." Just then Reyes felt her feet slipping and knew she couldn't balance any longer. It was one of those times when it's probably better to fall rather than risk more serious injury by trying not to. "John!" The world spun for a moment as gravity took hold. She had expected to hit the hard floor but she landed on something soft. The small groan below her brought her to her senses. She had fallen on Doggett. Here she was lying on top of him. They were chest-to-chest, face-to-face and Reyes' right knee was resting on his groin. They would look back on the situation and laugh but now the temperature in the room began to increase and not from the outside heat as they looked into each other's eyes and saw desire. This was a moment that could not be lost. They both knew what they must do then and moved in to kiss. It was a slow, measured kiss with all the emotion of a first time touching of lips. Then they went further and opened their mouths letting each other delve with hot tongues. Doggett's hands made sweeping movements over her back then wrapped around her and rolled her over so that he was on top. His left leg was now between Reyes' and his hips lightly touched hers. The kissing had become more heated and their hips were grinding when they heard a sound at the door. Realizing the world hadn't stopped around them like they'd thought Doggett quickly got up and Reyes followed. Both sets of eyes saw a foot tapping Assistant Director Skinner at the door. ........................ "I can explain sir, um, I was just on my desk trying to see if the fan was working and I fell onto John and..." Skinner was just shaking his head and Doggett was standing there head down, one hand was on his hip and the other rubbing the back of his head. They had been caught all right. How could they explain their way out of this one? "Agent Reyes, how long has this been going on down here? Maybe you two need an office closer to mine so I can keep an eye on you two." Doggett just shook his head and walked back to his desk leaving Reyes to explain. "I'm very sorry sir, it was just an accident. It won't happen again." She brushed her self down and as she did so realized her shirt was a little more open at the front exposing her black lace bra. As Skinner spoke she rearranged her clothing. "An accident? So if I hadn't come when I did would you have stopped there?" Reyes was desperate to change the topic but had dug herself into a hole. "Look Sir, really that was a one off. It wasn't meant to happen. It's so hot down here that we just lost all senses for a moment." He seemed to be satisfied so continued. "Your phone doesn't seem to be working so I've come to let you know there's a case. Get dressed you two and meet me in my office in ten." With that he was off and down the hall leaving two stunned FBI agents. Reyes hadn't realized she'd been holding her breath until she was gasping for air. When in control again she very sheepishly went back to her desk for her shoes. "Monica, I'm so sorry." There was concern in Doggett's voice. "I shouldn't have done that. I promise I won't put you in that situation again." Reyes could hardly maintain eye contact with her partner. She knew this was all wrong but she was confused by how good she felt. All the times she'd thought of Doggett's lips on hers and finally they'd kissed. It was wonderful but taboo. "That's all right John, let's put it down to the heat." They both said these words on the outside but now they had initiated first contact the feeling wasn't going to be so hard to shake. Once presentable Doggett ushered Reyes out the door to the elevator. What did their job on the X-Files have in store for them this time? As they entered the elevator Doggett spoke. "Is there anything in our office that's working? Really gotta get those maintenance guys down here." Reyes laughed a little knowing exactly what *was* working and it had something to do with her partner and what she'd felt between them as they kissed. Chapter Two AD Skinner's Office "I'm not sure I should be giving you this case Agents because of what I've just witnessed." "Sir, please. I told you it was a one off. You just caught us out." Reyes pleaded. "Agent Doggett, you've been quiet about this. What do you have to say?" "Sir, I agree with Agent Reyes, it was a mistake and we'll be more careful in future." He shifted in his seat then looked across briefly to his partner. Reyes was looking straight ahead at Skinner. He seemed to be satisfied for now, nodded and sat down pulling a thick folder from underneath some papers. "This is the file that has been accumulating over this case." "Accumulating sir?" Doggett reached forward as Skinner held out the folder to him. He immediately opened it and started reading, that expression of concentration covering his face. "For the past year as far as we know there's been a small township in Minnesota by one of the lakes that has been experiencing a phenomenon that no one has been able to explain." "Heatwave?" Doggett looks up from his reading to Skinner then across to his partner beside him. "According to this here the town of Laketon has been in a heatwave since May last year, well that was the first time it was reported. Is that right sir?" "Yes, Agent Doggett. This could have been going on longer but there is no proof." "So why us sir? Why the X-Files?" Reyes shook her head slightly as she spoke. "Because Agent Reyes no one sent there so far has been able to come up with any reason why a small town like that would stay in a ninety degree heatwave all year round." "Ninety degree heatwave? I can't believe it." "Well believe it Agent Doggett, it's all there in many case reports." "So what makes you think we will succeed where others have failed?" Doggett kept his furrowed gaze on Skinner as though he was listening to his words and reading his mind at the same time. "You're our last resort." Doggett's demeanor immediately altered. "Oh that's great. Sounds like you are expecting us to fail too." "No, I am expecting you to succeed." Doggett and Reyes remained quiet while he proceeded. "Since you came to the X-Files Doggett your determination and sometimes tunnel vision has helped solve many of your cases." He then glanced at Reyes. "And Reyes your calmness and coming at the situation coolly and from a different perspective has given you an excellent track record since you've been partners." "So by putting both our skills to this task you think we have a good chance of solving this unusual climatic event?" Reyes was looking from Skinner to Doggett as she spoke; she wanted this all to be clear. "So how do you want us to come at it sir? Do we go in as say tourists?" "No you go in as yourselves. I want you to be up front with them. I want them to know there is FBI presence in the town to give them hope that their weather can once again become normal." "So when do we leave?" Doggett began to get out of his chair. "Not so fast Agent Doggett." He sat again appearing puzzled. The assistant director then spoke in a slower voice wanting to make himself very clear. "That is why agents I cannot have any of that behaviour I saw down in your office before. We need level heads here and cogent thinking?" "Yes sir." Reyes was the first to speak. "Agent Doggett, you are FBI agents on this case not a couple of teenagers." "Yes sir, we understand. So when do we leave?" Chapter Three Reyes Apartment. "So what's our accommodation like John?" Reyes called from the bedroom as she finisheed packing her bag for an unknown length of stay in this small town in Minnesota. "Says here we have a room each at a place called Lakeside Resort. Sounds more like a vacation than a case." He laughed silently to himself. "Any fishing or water-skiing, those sorts of activities?" Reyes was smiling as she entered the living room struggling with suitcase in hand. Doggett chuckled, "Very funny Monica, but I don't think we'll have time for leisure activities there and besides they'll be expecting us to work on this case to solve it and hopefully get their weather back on track as soon as we can." "What do you think it may be John?" "I really don't know. I've never heard of this happening before especially just to a small town; maybe a larger area. Why just this town of, I think the file says two hundred or so residents? I'm sure with good police work we'll be able to figure it out." "That may be John but did you see all the reports in that file? Looks like the whole FBI has been there ahead of us and they've turned up nothing. They just confirm the excess unrelenting heat. They do say that the town's folk have been very friendly and cooperative." "What do you think Monica? Have you come across anything similar to this before?" "Never. I've read of cases of days and weeks of unrelenting weather conditions but not almost a year. All I can think of is maybe there's something focussing in on them from space." "Come on Monica, you don't believe in all that alien shit. There's not been one bit of hard evidence to prove the presence of alien life outside this earth." "I know John but that doesn't mean there isn't any. Extraterrestrial beings may not have been able to communicate with us yet or maybe the universe is so sparse with sentient life that our nearest neighbours may be just too far away." Doggett just shook his sceptical head. "Who says it has to be alien anyway. Maybe it's something to do with the satellites that orbit the world." "Oh well whatever it is let's be on our way. We need to be there, to experience all this first hand, to be able to make any more judgements." "So did you bring your swimsuit?" Reyes lifted her eyebrows a little and tried to push the thought out of her mind of this man in a swimsuit showing a lot more skin than she'd been used to. "No, I really don't think I'll need it." "Oh?" Reyes produced a cheeky grin. "What I mean Agent Reyes is that I probably won't have time to go swimming." "Okay I won't bring mine either." "Are you ready to go?" Doggett took Reyes heavy bag from the floor and she raced back into the bedroom. "I thought we might need this though." She held up a tube of sunscreen. "You know what John? I think the ninety degree weather will be probably more tolerable than our office at the moment." He laughed and added, "Hopefully maintenance will have visited by the time we get back. How many times will you fall on me before I suffer real injury." They both laughed and then went a little quiet. "We need to talk John." He knew exactly what she meant. "We've denied to ourselves what happened between us in the office before Skinner came in." "Monica, we can't let this go on further. It needs to be nipped in the bud now." Reyes could tell that Doggett looked a little concerned and hoped he'd liked the initial contact as much as she. She wasn't sure how she could keep her hands off him now though. "I can't forget what happened and we can't just take it back. I enjoyed it too much. Did you enjoy it John?" He didn't seem accustomed to talking so freely like this but Reyes wanted to know how Doggett felt. "Yes, it was good but we'll just have to remember it and not revisit. Fuck it Monica, we have a job to do. We are FBI partners and we must act that way. Promise me you will keep your mind on our case just like me?" He looked straight into her eyes as he said this. "I promise, my job is important to me too. Now that I know how you felt I can concentrate on solving this case." They both nodded with resolution as they left and locked up. ......................... Chapter Four Laketon, Minnesota, 5.00 pm "The signpost says one mile to go. I can't feel any heat yet." Monica opened the window of the rental car that Doggett was driving and kept it down. "Maybe since we got the case the heatwave has righted itself?" He looked briefly across to his partner. "I find that hard to believe but crazier things have been known to happen." "You're telling me, since working on the X-Files I've seen and experienced my share of the bizarre." "Look John, there's the city limits sign up ahead." They were silent as it came closer. Suddenly there was rush of raw heat in the car through Reyes' open window. "What the fuck!" Doggett almost swerved off the road. "Shit!" exclaimed Reyes as she wound up the window to shield them from the sudden burst of heat. "Did you notice that too John?" "You mean that charge of heat happened the exact time we passed the city limits sign." "Yes, that's so weird." Reyes was looking all around them for anything that could explain what had just happened. "Nothing out of the ordinary as far as I can see." Doggett also quickly glanced around for confirmation. All he could see were some open fields and a sprinkling of houses over the nearby hills and beside the road. "We need the air conditioning, noticing the warmth yet John?" "I think it's that small blue button there." Reyes pushed it and the cool air began to restore normality to the cabin atmosphere. "Thank goodness for air conditioning at times like these. What would we do without it?" "Yes John, this town probably has shares in the air conditioning industry." They both smiled and nodded. "I suggest we find our accommodation first then check in with the local police, what do you think Monica?" "Sounds good to me." She lifted up the paper that explained directions to Lakeside Resort. "There should be a turn off coming up soon. There! See that sign up ahead?" "Lakeside Resort. You know Monica? The name of this place suggests that it isn't normally one two FBI agents would stay at. Resort sounds a little too flashy to me." "Perhaps they're trying to attract tourists along. Maybe the weather like this day in day out they're not attracting so many tourists." "I suppose you're right." They headed through a copse of trees and into more bushland. There was a heat haze all around and the sun was glary making the two agents glad they'd remembered their sunglasses. Reyes retrieved them from the glove compartment and handed Doggett his. Such a simple thing as wearing sunglasses made Doggett look so sexy, Reyes thought. She was trying so hard to keep those thoughts off her mind. More and more her mind was heading towards wanting a relationship with this man that was more than friendship. It had been becoming harder and harder since their partnership to keep those thoughts at bay. After that spur of the moment steamy kiss they'd shared she wanted him more than ever now. "Looks like there's a turn off to the resort over the next hill." A smaller road led off to the left. There were trees on either side now and in the distance they could make out the shimmer of the lake. They couldn't believe their eyes when they saw the resort. Spotted around were log cabins, which looked like the accommodation, and in the center was a huge wooden two storey mansion. The two agents were now very surprised at what they saw. Around the mansion and the cabins were beautifully manicured gardens. The view of the lake was magnificent. The colourful mountains in the background mirrored in the water with ethereal picture quality. This resort looked very expensive, how could their FBI expenses ever cover anything even close to this. "I can't believe it. Who booked this for us?" "I just assumed it was Skinner's secretary. Looks as though it'd cost a pretty penny." Doggett found a parking spot close by to the main mansion and sat back feeling the air conditioning almost committing it to memory before the expected hot journey from the car to reception. "Must have really cut the rates to be able to afford this place." Reyes opened the car door and once again felt the searing heat after experiencing the frigid cabin air. "Oh god John, we just got our second taste of what we're going to have to put up with whenever we're outside." "I can see these guys must also have shares in the sun block industry as well." Reyes loved it when Doggett made one of his funny quips. "Let's go." "Hello, I'm Agent John Doggett and this is Agent Monica Reyes, you're expecting us I hope." The receptionist was an attractive woman in her forties with a nice smile and her hair tied up above her head. She had on a halter-top and wore shorts that ended mid thighs. She was definitely dressed for the heat. "Yes of course Agents, happy you could visit us. We haven't had many tourists of late especially since the weather turned on us like this." Doggett looked at the barometer on the wall behind reception and read ninety-eight degrees. "We'd love to talk with you later if that's okay." Reyes smiled at the woman. "Yes of course, you've probably had a tiring journey. My name's Karen by the way. If you need anything just call. We have a restaurant that's open from six and feel free to use any of our facilities while you're here." She handed each of them a brochure. "Now follow me and I'll take you to your cabin." The two agents stayed a little behind Karen just out of earshot. "Mon, have you noticed the temperature in here?" "Yes, it's almost as hot as outside. Where's the air conditioning?" Reyes looked around then up. "There are ceiling fans but they're not even going. That's odd." They both readjusted their collars as they kept following the receptionist to a cabin between the main mansion and the lake. Karen unlocked the door then gave Doggett the key, as he was the closest. "Remember agents just call when you need anything, I'm here to look to see you enjoy your stay." With that she left them looking at each other bewildered. ............................. "Come on John there has to be some kind of cool air around here somewhere or I'm about to strip off and dump myself in the bath." Reyes closed the front door and began searching the cabin. "Oh?" Doggett was a little taken aback by her statement and the image of Reyes in just her underwear was pushing its way to the front of his mind. He had to shake his head to push it back again. "This place is amazing. Have you seen the beds in our rooms? They're huge." She headed to the kitchenette and began looking through the cupboards. Doggett looked around also then met her there. "Look John, they're all stocked." She opened the fridge then looked over to her partner with a big grin. "We may not even need to go to the restaurant, everything is here that we need." "Except air conditioning." As if reminded of their plight Reyes reached for her shirt buttons and undid a couple then ballooned it out letting in some air. "I need cool air and I need it now." She looked up. "We have a ceiling fan. I hope it works better than the office one." She went to switch it on. They both sighed relief as it began to spin. "I've looked everywhere and cannot find any other way of cooling this place down. This is so strange. Why wouldn't they have cooling here?" "Maybe they're just used to the heat. Look John, how about you get the car and bring in the luggage while I'll fix some cool drinks." "Fine by me." He looked at his watch. "It's five thirty. I suggest we check in at the town's police station this evening then begin investigations tomorrow. They've put up with the heatwave this long, they can wait one more night." "Okay then but can we last that long?" "There are ways Monica." He left her to ponder the look on his face. He had a few ideas up his sleeve and she hoped they involved them being close but she doubted it. He'd seemed very determined when he'd looked into her eyes and had said < Promise me you will keep your mind on our case just like me?> His words stood out. Her thoughts turned devious. If he wanted her mind on the case then it would be, she was as determined as he to solve this where all the others before had failed. However there would be times when they'd need to relax to clear their minds; that was only natural. That kiss of his was too good just to throw it all away; she wanted more. Picking up the resort's brochure in one hand she opened the fridge door with the other and got out some lemonade cans and placed them on the bench. As she went to the cupboard to extract two tall glasses she read the front of the pamphlet. "Lakeside Resort, swimming, fishing, golf, tennis.... Sounds like heaven. Why are we here of all places and not in the town?" She found herself muttering. By the time she'd arranged everything on a tray including ice in the glasses and a packet of chocolate chip cookies from the pantry Doggett was opening the front door and dragging in the bags. "Phew, it's hot out there, not much cooler in here I might add." He looked over to the wall. "I see we also have a prominent barometer. It's almost like they're proud of their weather? It's dropped a little and is now ninety-six degrees." "I don't know about you but I have to get a little cooler John. Just let me know if you feel uncomfortable." The expectant look on Doggett's face made her inwardly smile. Standing up and slowly undoing her shirt buttons one at a time she kept an eye on her partner. When they were all undone she opened her shirt a little exposing her pale blue sheer lace bra, reached over to the lemonade can and began running it first over her neck then over her chest and down to her midriff. With all the sighs to go with this action she made sure the movements were slow and seductive. Looking up she saw Doggett just staring open-mouthed. "John, are you all right? Come on, here's your lemonade." She reached for his can, opened it and poured it over the ice in the glass then walked over to hand it to him. "I don't mind if you want to strip down a little too John." She smiled warmly at him not letting him see the true reason for her words. At times like these she wished she could read minds. The look on his face told her this action had made an impression. As she sipped her lemonade she had a mental image of undoing Doggett's shirt buttons for him and exposing that wonderful chest of his and feeling all over it with her fingers. She leaned back in the chair with eyes closed hoping that this man was watching her. .......................... Chapter Five Laketon Police Station 6pm The two FBI agents soaked in as much of the cool air as they could sitting in their car just outside Laketon Police Station. "I can see us sleeping in this thing tonight Monica. I don't know if I'm looking forward to a hot, muggy night. Was never fond of them." "Either this or an ice bath." He looked across to his partner and smiled at her comment. "Okay, here goes." With determination Doggett opened the car door and was momentarily still as the heat and humidity once again hit his face. Here it was six in the evening, it was getting darker and yet the temperature seemed to have only dropped a few degrees. Reyes also exited and they made their way to the front door. "Ah, you must be Agents Doggett and Reyes from the FBI." A rather attractive looking man a little taller than Doggett approached them all smiles and shook both their hands. As he took Reyes' he held it for a little longer then looked into her eyes before introducing himself. "I'm Detective Raymond Meyers, just call me Ray. I was expecting you two a little earlier." He began walking away and the agents followed. "Yes Ray, I hope you can understand we needed a little time to adjust to this heat of yours." Doggett stared at the man as he led them to his office. Reyes had seen that expression before; it wasn't unlike the look he gave Assistant Director Brad Follmer often when they crossed paths. "So you're here to try to explain this heatwave of ours." The detective sat back in his chair with a smug expression that seemed very much like one Follmer would have. Reyes began to see perhaps the reason for Doggett's response. "You don't seem too concerned about it." Doggett frowned at the man. "In fact the people we've met so far don't seem at all concerned by the unusual climate. Explain that." Still with a cocky smile he leant his head on one side. "Oh, I suppose we're used to it. We love the small community we have here. Those who couldn't stand the heat left ages ago." It was now Reyes' chance to speak. "Detective Meyers." "Ray," he interjected and gave her a half wink that Doggett noticed. "Ray, so you're not phased whether we find out the answers or not? Who called us then? Who contacted the FBI?" "Agent Reyes, we tried to solve the problem a year ago and got nowhere. We gradually just got used to the heat I suppose and began thinking that we still have abundant water, we have a beautiful setting here and we live comfortably. Why worry?" "So you're not the least bit curious why this is all happening?" Doggett leant forward, elbows on knees. "Don't get me wrong Agent Doggett after all I am a detective, I like to solve cases. This one's just too big and not that important in our eyes any more. Go ahead, be our guests, go out and poke around. I assure you there won't be anything out there now that we haven't already found and analysed." Doggett sat back in his chair again and Reyes recognised that look as steely determination. Meyers' words had sparked resolve in Doggett. He was going to find the answers here to wipe that smug look off this man's face. "So Ray," Reyes spoke. "What can you give us to go on?" The detective got out of his chair and headed for his filing cabinet and pulled out a thick folder then slapped it on the desk in front of them. "Here's everything we have on this case. Take it with you; peruse it at your leisure. All I ask is that you keep me informed of where you plan to go and get back to me with updates." Doggett had had enough of this man. He picked up the folder and made his way out the door. "Come on Agent Reyes, we have work to do." The detective followed them to the front door then with his hand gently on Reyes' back his ushered her our out. This hadn't gone unnoticed by her partner. ................. Chapter Six Doggett's and Reyes' cabin, 9pm "Monica, I'm getting more and more suspicious by the moment. Why do you think Detective Meyers wants to keep tabs on where we're going?" They'd had a dinner made from ingredients they'd found in the kitchen and now were into case mode before bed. Doggett had spread out the contents of the 'heatwave' folder on the coffee table and was looking at a green form. By now Reyes had changed into a skimpy top and shorts. Even wearing her bra made it too hot so that had been discarded. She was reading one of the reports while her bare feet also rested on the coffee table. Doggett had seen her come out of her bedroom dressed that way, with obviously no bra and knew if she continued to tease him like this it was going to be very difficult to keep his promise to Skinner. He was going to make a comment about covering up more around him but it was hot and Reyes did look more comfortable. He would just have to try and divert his eyes and imagination and think of the case. There was more than enough to occupy him in the reports lying in front of him. "Maybe there's something he might not want us to see?" "Hmm, that's what I thought too. Did you notice in these reports about the weather stats?" Doggett looked up from what he was reading and tried hard to just look at Reyes' face. "Yes," she spoke slowly, eyes still on the form. "Seems like the weather stays in the nineties and never deviates; same with the humidity." "It says here," he waved the green paper. "That the lowest recorded temperature for the last year has been ninety and the highest ninety-nine. I would call this some sort of clue but don't know what to make of it yet. Monica, tomorrow we're going to have to do some interviews with town members and also a bit of snooping." Reyes noticed thin beads of sweat forming on Doggett's forehead and knew he was overheated but probably resisting stripping off in front of her. "John, you're hot. Don't mind me; just go and put on something cooler. It'll help you concentrate more." When he wasn't moving she got up, took his hand and lead him to his bedroom. "Now go and find something cool to wear; you haven't changed since we got here." Moments later he was out just wearing some shorts. Reyes had never seen him in so little clothing before and liked what she saw very much. That toned body of his had been hidden under work suits all this time. He went via the kitchen and brought back with him some more lemonade for each of them then sat and flicked through a few more pieces of paper. She found herself staring over every part of him and then focused on his long arms and large hands and imagined them around her once more but this time in a loving embrace. They had hugged a number of times now while comforting each other but Reyes wanted it to be more. "Happy now Mon?" She probably didn't need to answer; her face said it all. "Mon?" "Ah John, I think you'd better go and put some clothes back on if we're going to get any work done here." He chuckled to himself, smiled and shook his head. "You're a fine one to talk, dressing like that in front of me. It's amazing I can keep the paper still enough to read it." "Oh, dressed like what? I'm only trying to keep cool." Reyes wanted him to tell her exactly how he felt. "So the scanty top with no bra isn't for my benefit? Monica, you're just making it too hard for me here." "Well what should we do about this John? If we put clothes back on it'll just make us hotter. Taking them off distracts us from the paperwork." Reyes got up out of her seat and walked around and placed herself next to Doggett. "John, we both know that the kiss this morning was special. We both felt something; I know I want more. No matter what I promised Skinner I can't keep it. I want you John." Doggett's expression showed a little confusion. He wanted this too but there were too many conflicting emotions running around inside him. This was his work partner. How could she possibly be his lover too? Looking into her wanting brown eyes, seeing her lips plead to be kissed once more, he moved forward. This kiss was long and slow, in contrast to the hasty, fiery one in their office that morning. Reyes felt those arms of his slowly envelop her as their mouths moved in synchrony. Her hands making their way over his bare back caused her mouth to open more and Doggett responded to this by laughing a little then running his tongue along her lips and plunging it in her mouth as the kissing became more forceful. Their bodies were dangerously hot now with so much skin and body contact but they didn't care. They both wanted this no matter the repercussions later. After minutes of sensual, close contact Reyes rested her head in the crook of Doggett's neck while they both caught their breath. Doggett still felt her lips on his even when they'd been parted. "So John, what say we give this paperwork a miss for now and continue our new case in one of our bedrooms?" Doggett was just about to respond when there was a heavy knock at the door. ............................... They must have looked rather dishevelled as they answered the door because the look on Detective Meyer's face seemed to convey confusion. Doggett had very quickly found a T-shirt to cover his bare chest. "Did I disturb something here?" Reyes was the one to respond. "No! We were reading through the reports and just didn't expect anyone to be visiting us." He didn't seemed convinced, after all he was a trained detective; he probably knew exactly what had been going on. "Thought I'd just pop in and see if you've read the reports yet and have any questions about the case." "Just a few." Doggett showed a little sarcasm. He still didn't trust this man. There was something about his smarminess that suggested he was hiding something. "Can I come in?" Doggett moved aside all the while staring at him. As the detective passed Reyes he leant in and whispered, "Nice outfit." Reyes just smiled. She'd met people like this before and knew it was usually better just to play along rather than make a big deal out of it. Doggett wasn't so tolerant. "Do you come onto all the FBI agents like that Meyers?" "Only ones as hot as your partner. You I could pass." He laughed and headed over to the table. "I can see you've actually been doing some work here." He picked up one file then dropped it again. Doggett seethed under his quiet exterior. Reyes decided to diffuse the situation. "Ray, would you like a cool drink, an iced tea, a beer?" "A beer would hit the spot Agent Reyes." "Okay, I'll be right back." Meyers waited until she was out of earshot before he spoke. "Doesn't the Bureau have rules against that Agent Doggett?" "Against what Detective Meyers?" He spoke with jaw clenched. "Romantic affairs with partners." "What makes you think there's a thing between my partner and myself?" "Come on." He leaned towards Doggett. "How could you not touch her, she's one sexy woman?" His demeanour then turned unexpectedly cool. "Maybe headquarters needs to hear about this." "And you would do that?" "Agent Doggett, I got the feeling in my office earlier that you may decide to keep some findings from me. I'm not used to being kept out of the loop." Just then Reyes came back and distributed beers to the men. Without breaking his stare he spoke to Reyes, "Monica, it looks as though Detective Meyers here is threatening to tell lies about us to the FBI." Meyers suddenly went back to all sweetness. "Thankyou Monica for the beer." "She's Agent Reyes to you." Doggett felt a sudden urge to literally knock some manners into this man but it would not help the fact that there was an obstacle here between them that he was damned sure he was going to hurdle. The detective just lifted his eyebrows and went to sit down. "Not so fast Meyers, it's late now. How about we contact you in the morning when we've finished up with all this?" Doggett indicated with his head towards all the paperwork they still needed to sift through. "All right, let's make a firm time." Doggett walked to the front door and opened it indicating for the detective to leave. "If we must we'll meet you at ten." Meyers walked past Reyes and she was sure she felt a light touch on her butt. Deep down she was a little flattered by this attention but she could see that Doggett was peeved. As Meyers left he looked from one of the agents to the other and said in a low voice, "Sweet dreams." His face erupted in a sassy grin as he headed towards his car. He turned to his car and as he opened the door he looked back at them. "Oh and by the way, just remember I have eyes and ears everywhere." ............................. Doggett waited until the sound of the car engine was well away before he spoke. "Monica we're really going to have to watch ourselves here. I don't want any trouble with this Detective Meyers." "You don't think he's being serious do you John?" "I think he's trying to keep us on our toes, for the life of me I don't know why. We have to keep our minds on this case and not on any feelings for each other." Reyes was obviously disappointed but understood that Meyers could cause trouble for them even if what he said wasn't entirely true. If any word got back to A.D.Skinner about their unprofessional behaviour they could be taken off this case and left in disgrace. "Come on Monica, we've got at least a couple of hours reading before we can go to bed." Sharing a bed that night had been on their minds but was now out of the question. Reyes' thoughts were not on the case as she lamely read through the words. The heat was oppressive and the thought of an opportunity lost with this man before her played on her mind. It was probably just as well the detective came when he did and not a little later when maybe they would be in bed together making love. The thought of Doggett in bed with her made her mind wander further. Thoughts turned lustful as she imagined his naked body against hers, those arms entwined around her and his legs linked with hers. Just the way he hugged her she just knew he would be good in the bedroom too. How could his ex-wife leave this man? She knew she would never want to be without him by her side. Her eyes became glazed as she blankly stared into space. "Monica, your mind's not on this. What are you thinking about?" Reyes didn't particularly want to tell him that she'd been distracted from the case by thoughts of him making love to her. "I'm not really up to this right now, I'm tired and it's far too hot. I think I need to wash up a bit." "I'll just finish up here and then I'm going to bed." Reyes wondered whether Doggett had been thinking of her too. She'd seen him glance at her a little too often. They had kissed twice now and the second one even topped the first. She would go to bed alone with these thoughts and all the possibilities of where their relationship could head when this case was over. She got up and went to the bathroom and turned the cold faucet first. Running her finger through the water she waited for it to turn cool. It only took about ten seconds before she realized that she was only going to feel warmth. "Where are you going?" Doggett called from the couch. "To get some ice. This climate has heated the water pipes so if we want cold water while we're here we're going to have to make it ourselves." "That's something I hadn't thought of." Doggett was thinking. "I'll be back soon Mon. I'm going to see if Karen's still up. Maybe I can get extra ice from her." By the time Doggett came back Reyes was in bed half asleep. She vaguely heard what she thought was the bath being filled with ice. If she couldn't have him in her bed right then she would imagine it. As she clutched the pillow beside her she dreamed about him lying next to her and what it would be like if he came to her in the middle of the night having changed his mind. In the other bedroom as Doggett prepared for bed. He was also thinking about Reyes and was even more determined to wrap up this case to see if they could make a romantic relationship work. He stripped right down and hopped under the covers. This was going to be one long night. The oppressive heat and humidity was going to make it very uncomfortable. Another contributing factor was the knowledge that he was alone in bed once again when a beautiful, sexy woman was right next door; one who also wanted him. His eyes closed imagining what it would be like if she was in his arms all through the night. ..................... Chapter Seven Doggett's and Reyes' Cabin 3 am "What's wrong Monica?" Doggett had to say this a number of times before he got a response. He moved quietly over to her bed through the darkened room. The night was muggy, hot and uncomfortable and he'd had to sleep in just his boxers to feel any inkling of comfort that he could grab onto to get at least a little sleep. Reyes was still groaning in what appeared like fitful sleep. She looked so beautiful bathed in the moonlight that was streaming through the window. The silvery fingers of light reflected off the faint gleam of sweat over her chest, face and neck. Doggett wondered what she was wearing to bed. She was definitely wearing something because he could see the thin straps over her shoulders. "Oh John,," she murmured only half awake. "Is that you?" Her hair was slicked back off her face and her expression appeared a little pained as her eyes opened only part way. "Monica, it sounded as though there was something wrong. You were groaning." He sat on the bed beside her; a little forward on his part but the heat had lack of sleep had drained the energy out of his legs. "Wait, I'll get you a cool drink." He came back moments later with a glass of the cool water from the bathroom sink. "Oh thankyou," she said as she sat up slowly and took the glass. As she did her bed sheet fell to her lap and Doggett caught a glimpse of her small burgundy camisole outlining very precisely her exquisitely shaped breasts. He had the immediate urge just to reach out and feel them through the silky fabric, to make her nipples harden at his touch but drew back. Her defined shoulder blades were beckoning to also be fondled and as those lips touched the edge of the glass he once again remembered those lips on him back in their office in DC and just hours before in the living room. "So what's wrong Monica?" he had to stop these thoughts. He took the empty glass from her hand and placed it on the bedside table. "I just can't sleep in this heat John. I've been having small dozes but then I've woken up with beads of sweat running down me. What about you John?" "Same." "Don't worry about me, just try and get some sleep. Thanks for the water." She slumped down in bed again and as she did Doggett saw a glimpse of bare midriff and the rim of matching burgundy fitted boxers. Her camisole clung to her sweaty body He thought for a moment and got up determinedly. "What is it?" A moment later he came back with something in his hand. "I'm going to try and cool you down so you can get some sleep okay?" "All right," she said a little quizzically. In the silvery light it looked like he had a washcloth. ................... "This might be a little cold to start with." Monica felt the coolness on her arm and knew that Doggett had drenched the washcloth in the cool water left over from the melted ice in the sink. With a long, slow movement he trailed the cloth down one arm from her shoulder, over her elbow to her wrists and hand. He then repeated the same action just as deliberately, feeling every contour on the way. Then he went to her other arm and did the same, making sure he covered every nook and cranny. "Like that?" It took a short while before Reyes could answer. The feel of him touching her this way was becoming too much. "Hmm," is all she could say. "Wait a moment and I'll get a bowl of cold water. The cloth's getting warm already." He was back in no time and dipped the cloth into the icy water. "Now your face." Doggett leant over her and she closed her eyes feeling firstly his hip pushing in next to her then the cool material on her face. He brushed over her forehead first then her cheeks then he made a line over her lips. Some gurgles came from her throat as the cloth was drawn over her neck, which wasn't just flushed from the room temperature. "Like that? Is it working?" She still couldn't talk. Reyes wondered if Doggett knew how he was making her feel. What he did next made her situation even more urgent. She felt the bed covers move down her body and his fingers trail ever so lightly over her abdomen which made her jump. "I'll stop if you want me to Monica." "No!" she managed to bleat. With that encouragement the bed sheet was pulled right off her and she felt the coolness on her feet and ankles first. Doggett every now and then replenished the cold water as he made a slow journey up her legs. She was quite cool now but didn't want him to stop this attention to her body. When he finally got to her thighs he lifted her knees so he could move the cloth all the way around. Reyes found her knees moving apart a little as the cloth traced over her inner thighs. She wondered what Doggett was thinking. Was he doing this as a friend helping another friend or was there more to this? When the washcloth was on her stomach she flinched at the suddenness. "I want to do this for you Monica, I'll go back to bed when you tell me." Again the words were just not capable of escape. The coolness trailed over her bare abdomen then she could feel fingers lift her camisole and the cloth go underneath to her breasts. Doggett must have surely known then that she was very aroused. Her hips were moving, she was breathing heavily and bubbling sounds were coming from her throat. His fingers made their feathery way over her chest and she knew he wanted her camisole off. Her arms lifted automatically until she was bare breasted in front of him. She could feel his strong hands through the cloth as he made slow movements over her. "Sit up, I'll cool down your back." She complied although with difficulty because of her heightened state of arousal. After rinsing the cloth and squeezing he straddled her and reached to her back with arms wrapped around her. There were a number of things he did now that almost made her just want to give in and make love to him there and then. Apart from the cool of the material on her back she felt his hot breath very close to her cheek. She wanted to reach around and kiss him but also didn't want what he was doing to stop. What she also felt was what she'd felt between them when they'd been kissing on the floor in their office when he had rolled on top of her. This also aroused him and she knew now that all his actions would have to lead to the inevitable. "Oh John, don't stop.... Ahhhhh" She was moving her hips under him now and could feel him get even harder. Trailing once again around to her front he made icy circles around her breasts, then his hands found their way over her shoulders and down her sides to stop just short of the rim of her silky boxers. He moved them rim down over her hips until it lay just above her hairline. This was all too much. "I want you John, now." She couldn't hold it in any longer. Her hands went to the rim of his boxers to rip them off but he grabbed her wrists and put them to her sides. Without any words he got off her and the bed and walked out of the room. .............................. Doggett couldn't believe what he'd just done. He leaned over the bathroom sink with hands on the rim supporting his weight just trying to see how it had got to this point. The throbbing between his legs was almost unbearable but he had to think thoughts to make it go away. Skinner had expressly said that they were not to play around with each other and he had promised him. He couldn't break a promise. He couldn't jeopardize his career over an action he did because of his hormones. It could all be seriously regretted later when the deed had already been done. He punished himself for getting his partner to the point where she wanted sex. "John?" Reyes appeared at the door now with her camisole back on, her pants pulled up and spoke with a shaky voice. He just shook his head for a moment while his partner and almost lover came over to him. "Tell me what's wrong? Don't you want me?" He kept shaking his head for a few more moments while Reyes was thinking all sorts of possible reasons for this change in behaviour. "We promised Skinner, Monica. I assure you I didn't start out to seduce you. I just wanted to help you and it got out of hand." "I know we promised Skinner but I'm finding this all too much, this weather and you." "Me? You're finding me too much?" He looked at me with a worried expression still with his hands over the sink. "Every time you touch me or even look at me I keep remembering that kiss and now..." "Now you'll think of what I've just done to you." He looked down and shook his head again. She placed a gentle hand on his arm. "Yes, I will not forget it, and now I want more. You can't leave me like this John. You made me hot for you and I want to make love to you no matter what Skinner says." He kept shaking his head. "We both want this. Tell me now if you don't want me and I'll go back to bed and try to sleep." The wait was excruciating for Reyes. "Yes, I do want you," he said too quietly for Reyes to hear. "What was that? Do you want me or not?" Doggett had real difficulty saying it the first time without having to repeat it so was silent. "I'm going back to bed now John. I expect you to come and *show* what you want before I go back to sleep. I want your body next to mine very soon. ................... Chapter Eight Reyes' and Doggett's cabin 3.30 am What was Doggett doing? Reyes knew he wanted to make love and sleep with her. Surely he wasn't intimidated by Detective Meyers' words that he had eyes and ears everywhere. It wasn't his nature to be threatened like this so it must have been something else. This was in the middle of the fucking night. As if anyone would see them in the same bed together. The resort was at best at a quarter residential capacity and they hadn't seen any activity in the cabins adjacent to theirs. Enough was enough. Reyes was adamant now that she would find out the problem and talk some sense into him. If it was only his promise to Skinner then she may be able to talk him over that hurdle. This night was the night they would sleep together; it was the perfect opportunity. They were away from home, alone and out of immediate scrutiny. If she didn't do this now there may not be another chance as ideal. She got out of bed and made her way to Doggett's bedroom. He was not there. That didn't faze her, instead of looking for him she'd wait for him in his bed. Minutes later she saw him enter the room and make his way to the bed. "Monica, I was looking for you." So he wasn't just going to leave her to pine away for him. She'd had images of being alone in bed in the morning. "Get in here now John. You're not getting away with bringing me to the brink of sexual arousal and then taking it away." "I told you I didn't mean for that to happen." "Well it did and you just have to follow through. I know you were just as stirred up as I was." She held out her hand for him to get under the sheet beside her. He hesitated a little but conceded. "What's bothering you John?" He rolled onto his side to face her and looked at her with a slightly worried expression. "I don't want to do anything here that either of us is going to regret later," he said in his quiet low husky voice. She ran the back of her fingers over his cheek and smiled. She'd seen that forlorn expression before and it always made her want to protect and mother him. "I would never regret anything we do together. I want us to be closer. Now come here and hug me." She held her arms out and this time she felt his wonderful hands directly on her rather than through the washcloth. Here they were finally in bed together. After all the years in close contact, the pain, the angst, the longing and then the comforting embraces they were about to physically cement their feelings of love for each other. They both wanted to be there in the bed together and each knew they wanted the other to be completely satisfied with the experience. Doggett was the first to lay a kiss on her lips. His fingers made their way slowly over her back of her shoulders and pulled her in so their bodies touched exquisitely. They both knew this first time was going to be slow and exploratory. The kisses were just getting better each time. Their mouths were only slightly apart at first but as their hands moved down each other's backs their lips opened and they intensified the kiss. Each knew that before this attention was complete they would have mapped out each other's bodies with roaming hands. The quiet of the night surrounded them. All that could be heard was their breathing and contented sighs. Doggett's hands traced down Reyes spine and lightly feathered her ass then with firm but gentle fingers she felt his fingers on her inner thigh as he lifted her leg to rest over his hip. This caused her to lay a little on top. Then it was her turn to feel down his bare back. This was the body she had ogled at before and now he was letting her touch him. Her leg linked with his moving up and down feeling its contours with her foot. He rolled her over still kissing so now he was almost on top. Doggett drew back for a moment just peering into her eyes and when he saw love and longing looking back at him he knew he could proceed. Reyes just knew they were progressing to the next stage. ............. His hand went to her camisole and he pulled the rim as Reyes sat up a little. This helped him to pull it over her head. Then with one hand he traced the outline of her breasts. Reyes arched back letting him take control. "That's so good John," she whispered. She could feel the sweat from the inexhaustible heat dripping down her cleavage. This kind of heat she didn't mind. He went into kiss again and knew that he wanted to feel his chest on hers. He clung to her other leg and rolled her over so she was on top. At first all her weight was on his but then for better control she placed her hands beside him. "Monica, are you ready?" He began to tug at her boxers. What such a sweet question to ask. Of course she was ready. She let him take them down over her hips and she helped him the rest of the way. Doggett was watching on as she slipped the last remnant over her right foot and onto the floor. "You're so beautiful." At these words Reyes felt an inner glow; they were so heartfelt. As he admired her body his hands went to her ass and he drew her closer for more kisses. He was very hard between them now and they each knew it wouldn't be long before they were linked in body as well as soul. "I want you now John." Reyes felt every pour of her body tingling with desire. Doggett's limbs were throbbing with want. Reyes sat up and began pulling Doggett's boxers down. He lifted his ass to aid her. As the material caught on his arousal he gasped. Once she'd made sure her hands had covered the length from the tops to the bottoms of his legs her hand went to his erection. Firm fingers wrapped around it. "Oh god John, I love you so much." She was dying for this thick, long shaft to be inside her. He took control again at this stage and rolled her over onto her back. Their bodies were sweaty and the sheets clung to them as they did so. Doggett pulled off the sheet and dropped it to the floor so they were totally bare on the bed. He then urged her to spread her legs with which she complied with a few more groans. This was finally going to happen; something they'd both wanted for a while now. His cock was resting on her opening ready to penetrate. "Are you still sure Mon." How could he ask that when everything about Reyes said she was crying for it? "John, I love you, just make love to me." Her hands went to his butt to direct him. He went in a little at first just feeling the internal heat of his lover there below him. He moved in very slowly groaning with each inch, until he felt he could go no further. Reyes felt up and down his legs between her and her hands ran over his back. She just wanted a reminder that this was really him on top of her and in her. She almost held her breath below him as she felt this exquisite manhood slip measuredly inside her. He moved out just as slowly. Every move was like they'd captured a little bit of heaven. They both wanted this first time to last. Every movement in and out became a little quicker each time. This was just right for both of them. Doggett was in awe of this squirming body below him. She was alive and glistening in the moonlight, which shone through the nearby window. Her vocal sounds just made him hotter for her. He leant down to give her more kisses until he just had to break them to concentrate on the exquisite feel of being inside her at last. Reyes was becoming more vocal and her hips were meeting his with more force. As if reading each other's signals the movements built up gradually until they were almost frenzied. The sweat was dripping off their bodies then as they were nearing the ultimate in sexual union. Reyes felt hers first just as a slow tingle in the pit of her stomach. It was a very slow start so she knew this was going to be strong. Doggett must have sensed her changed body language and was also showing signs of an imminent orgasm. The feel of Doggett pumping brought her to the heights of giddiness. "Oh Monica, I love you." He was slowing down then and she felt a drop of his sweat drip down her cheek. They were both soaked with sweat from the heat of the room and the searing sex. It was ages before they had calmed down enough to become aware of the room around them again. It was only then that Doggett slipped out of her and lay beside her. "That was wonderful Mon." Reyes felt a trickle down between her legs and smiled knowing it wasn't sweat. This memory she also clung onto. This had been their first sexual encounter and it had been unforgettable. Her fingers lightly felt down his arm as she spoke. "Yes, we can make it even get better and better." His face lit up with the thought that now that they had made love once there would be many other opportunities. There would be no thoughts of regret tonight. Doggett reached out for Reyes hand and squeezed it and closed his eyes. Before they each knew it they were sleeping despite the muggy heat that had kept them awake before. .................. Chapter Nine Doggett's and Reyes' cabin - early morning Reyes woke in the morning to an empty space beside her. Where had Doggett gone? She remembered back to the middle of the night and was proud of herself for making the move she did. They had finally made love and it had been better than her hottest dreams. Her eyes closed imagining his body in close contact, the heat, the desire, the sweat and her eventual release. Her heart made a few flutters as she once again felt him inside her. It must have been about fifteen minutes she lay like that and Doggett was still not back and she heard no other sounds. The space in the bed was too empty. The temperature in the room was too hot. How could anyone cope with heat like this? She looked across to the barometer on the wall. It was now 98.3. It was only six in the morning and all ready too hot. Her body wanted to get cool. As she got out of bed her mind fixated on cool water and decided what she'd do. After finding the cabin empty with no Doggett she went to have a shower and then got dressed in shorts and a v-necked T-shirt. Grabbing a dry towel from the bathroom she headed out the door towards the lake. Why had they decided not to bring swimsuits? Obviously their minds had not realised just how hot this place would be. At the water's edge she paddled in the coolish water with bare feet then looked around her. Seeing no one she took off her T-shirt and shorts and left them on her towel on a nearby seat. Just in her bra and pants she waded a little way into the water then dived in. The cool water surrounding her was welcome respite. She swam out a little way then trod water as she looked all around her. The setting was wonderful. Even though the heat was still there it momentarily was forgotten as she took in the beauty of the bluish snow capped mountains in the distance and the dark green forest surrounding the lake. The reflections in the water were pristine. An inner calmness took over Reyes' body as she floated on her back looking up at the clear blue sky. Just waving her arms in the water every so often she didn't notice something behind her until she bumped into it. Quickly turning she'd bumped into a pontoon part way into the lake. She looked back and estimated she had drifted about one hundred yards from shore. Climbing up gave her a wonderful view of the way she had come. She could hardly make out the cabins and the large mansion through the trees. She could just imagine herself as the only one here on this planet. Just then she saw a figure in the distance and knew who it must be. Diving in she began her swim back to shore. As she got to the edge she looked up to see Doggett with a big grin on his face holding up her towel and clothes. For a moment she wondered what he was going to do and then he began to walk away. "John, come back here you rat!" He just shook his head and kept walking. So she was expected to walk back to the cabin in her underwear? "John!" She made one last plea before he turned around grinning widely and began his walk back. What was he thinking? He put her clothes on the seat and then began to take off his clothes. When down to his boxers he made his way to the water's edge and then dived in. After a few swift strokes he stopped and turned waiting for Reyes to catch up. "Come on girl, swim with me." He still had that devilish grin as she swam up to him. He wrapped his arms around her and gave her a glorious morning kiss. "How do you do that?" Reyes was almost drowning with her knees going weak. "Do what?" "Kiss me like that?" He just laughed and then swam off and Reyes followed him. He let her catch up a little way ahead and they swam once again to the pontoon. "So where were you John? I missed you in bed this morning." They were both lying on their backs side by side looking up at the sky. "Just looking around. You looked so peaceful sleeping I didn't want to disturb you." "You didn't leave me a note?" He got up on an elbow and lifted his eyebrows. "Gotta keep a little mystery. Sometimes I think you read me like a book." She laughed because that's often how she felt. "So where were you?" "Just taking a look around. Did you know they have an indoor swimming pool?" "No, I haven't read the whole brochure yet. I suppose they don't need to spend too much money on pool heating here." Reyes laughed. "Well there's something fishy about that. The pool room is actually cool and as far as I can tell it's the only cool area in the whole resort." Reyes interest was definitely peaked. "That's funny, must be some sort of clue I suppose." "Another thing, there were duel entrances into the swimming pool. I couldn't open the second door unless the first was closed." "So it's as though they are trying to keep the cool air in." "Or the hot air out." They both made mental notes. Doggett looked into Reyes eyes once more and a gentle smile appeared in his serene face. "You're very beautiful Monica. Last night I will never forget." "There's plenty more where that came from." Almost before she had the chance to reply he was kissing her again. His hand ran to her back and pulled her to him. Reyes responded and opened her mouth to let him in again. As they kissed passionately and then made love again neither of them saw the lone figure watching them from far away on the shore. They certainly didn't see this figure answer the cell phone ringing in Doggett's pants. ............ Chapter Ten Doggett's and Reyes' cabin 8 am They were now dressed again after their early morning swim and decided to have some breakfast then spend about an hour going through the reports they'd neglected last night because of the heat and the lascivious thoughts they both had for each other. It was still a couple of hours before their appointment with Meyers so they thought this would be a good time for some investigative work. Heading off in the car they decided to retrace yesterday's steps back to the town sign they had passed on the way in and to plot the mileage. Remembering back to the sudden gush of hot air as they got to this sign they both wanted to know the exact extent of this heatwave. "This works out to be six miles from the town centre." Reyes looked up from her map then looked across to her partner. "You're wondering the same thing as I am?" "Where this heatwave extends to?" She reached for the glove compartment and retrieved the pen to mark the spot on her map. "I just want to see if the theory I have is true." "Theory John? What theory's that?" "That it may be centred around the town with a radius of those six miles you calculated." "How do you figure that? "Well the whole thing seems so unnatural. It almost seems technological in nature rather than just a random event" "So you haven't discounted extraterrestrials and maybe a satellite going haywire?" "Monica, we can't discount anything yet but what you're saying is a little too much bullshit for me." He turned the car around and then they headed to the other side of town once again testing Doggett's theory. "That's six miles again John. Want to try east now?" She marked this also on her map as Doggett once again turned the car around. They hadn't yet noticed the car that had been following them. Their drive east took them past a school. Reyes estimated about twenty children happily playing in the yard. "John, even the children here seem to not mind the heat." He glanced over to see a couple of children looking as though they were playing the old fashioned game of chasey. "That is odd Monica. They don't even look lethargic. What's with that?" "They're being sun smart though, at least they're wearing hats for sun protection." As she felt the cool air of the air conditioning on her face she began wondering whether vehicles in this town used climate control. As they approached the six mile mark they both braced themselves before opening the window to test the outside temperature. Their thoughts were confirmed as they exited the city limits and entered cool air once more. "Do we even bother trying the other direction?" Reyes marked this new section while she spoke. "Yes, at the moment we think it may be circular but we have to test the other direction to make sure." This time they passed a few houses and then the trees seemed to end and all they could see were open fields. At the four mile mark they saw something up ahead that broke the monotony. 'What's that?" Reyes was the first to see it. "Looks like a fenced off section." As they came closer they could see a number of warning signs. Each of them was not looking forward to the heat again after the cool atmosphere inside the cabin but this was something they needed to do. Pulling up near a gate in the tall wire fence they got out. As Doggett went to the gate Reyes walked a little way along the perimeter peering inside. "Can't see anything here John. Looks like it's a fairly big area being fenced off." Doggett was rattling on the gate but it looked as though it would not budge. From behind them they heard another vehicle approaching. They both turned to see a silver Ford Crown Victoria pulling up next to their rental car. Both Doggett and Reyes waited expectantly while the occupant showed their face. "Whatcha doing here? This land has restricted access." A rather large man in a suit walked towards them. Doggett flashed his FBI badge. "I'm FBI Special Agent Doggett and this is my partner Special Agent Reyes and you are?" "I'm Roger Martin, let's just say I'm a friend of Detective Meyers." Doggett produced his familiar frown, the one that showed he needed some evidence before he trusted this man. "What do you have in here Mr. Martin?" The man walked up to the gate hands in pockets and looked through. "Let's just say Agent Doggett it's nothing to do with the FBI." "What's so important that it has to be kept secret?" It was Reyes' turn to talk. "Nothing at all really." His look showed otherwise. He looked at his watch. "I believe you have fifteen minutes until your appointment with Meyers. You don't want to keep that man waiting." Without his gaze leaving Martin he spoke to Reyes. "Come on Agent Reyes, maybe we can get answers elsewhere." They both walked back to their car and backed out onto the road. "What was that all about?" Reyes spoke. "It's nothing? Bullshit! Monica I think we're going to have to work out a way to come back here. I haven't read anything on the reports about an area with restricted access. Don't you think that's a little bit suspicious?" "Maybe it is nothing and that's why we have heard mention of it." "That's not what I think. That man's hiding something. What's going on in this town?" he looked across to his partner. "I'm not taking any more of this town's crap. We're going to find out what's happening here Monica. No amount of intimidation and blackmail is going to stop me." Reyes turned to him smiling. This was the John Doggett she had come to admire and love; the one who determinedly pursued the truth at all costs. Chapter Eleven. Laketon Police Station 9.55am "What's all this about a restricted access area out of town?" Doggett forcefully pushed open the door of Detective Meyers' office. The detective looked up from his desk. He was sitting on the edge and an attractive woman was on the seat in front of him. "Agent Doggett do you normally barge into someone's office like that?" Doggett noticed the flushed expression of the woman and wondered what had been going on just before he'd entered. "You've been keeping stuff from us Meyers, we need some explanations." The detective motioned for the woman to leave. She hurriedly did so hanging her head slightly as she passed the agent. "Why don't you take a seat." He looked over to the door. "Agent Reyes's not with you?" "She'll be here, she's just taking a call." Doggett wondered why Meyers suddenly smiled. "What's so amusing?" "You think you're going to find anything here that we haven't found already? You big FBI agents come out here thinking you're god. You'll go back with nothing I tell you." Doggett leaned forward and said in a low, determined voice. "We will find out what's going on here, what you're obviously trying to hide from us." Meyers leant back in his seat and smirked. "So what's the penalty in the FBI for having a sexual relationship with a partner?" Before Doggett could respond the detective continued. "I do believe you could be dismissed." Doggett just gritted his teeth. What could he say? He couldn't lie to this man but he also couldn't come out with the truth. "She's a very beautiful lady. I'm sure she's hot in bed too but what she sees in you I don't know." Doggett continued to look on seething. "What my partner and myself do behind closed doors is no concern of yours." "My sources tell me that behind closed doors is not the only place you do it." Once again he didn't let Doggett respond. "I told you I have eyes and ears everywhere Agent Doggett" "You're talking about Martin? Don't you trust us or is it just that you have something you don't want us to find." He once again turned serious. "I just want to remind you Doggett that I will know your every move. I already know you were out at the quarry." "The quarry, so that's what it is? You don't mind if we look around a bit?" "There's nothing there that's connected to this heatwave, I assure you." "Then you won't mind if we take a look." "Don't go there Agent Doggett!" He was a little too forceful with this comment which only lay credence to Doggett's theory that the quarry was indeed important to this case. A moment later Reyes walked into the office. "What lies have you been telling about us Meyers?" She was just as forceful as Doggett had been when he entered. Her partner looked on inquisitively. Her change in attitude must have been due to the phone call she'd received as they were entering the police station. "Lies Agent Reyes? You two are a little jumpy today. Worried about something?" Reyes turned to Doggett. "That was Assistant Director Skinner on the phone saying he'd received news from here that our first priority here was for sex rather than the case." "Sit down Agent Reyes." She looked at her partner as he spoke and didn't see the astonishment that she'd expected. "He already knows." "What!" Doggett stood and faced Meyers again and spoke with a cool, steady voice and pointing a finger, "But that doesn't mean we're not focussed on this case. We're going to leave no stone unturned. Mark my words, if there is anything here to tie you to this charade then we're not the ones who will be dismissed." With that lightly touched Reyes' elbow and stormed out of the office. As Reyes rose to leave too she noticed an ever so slight change of expression in the detective and she knew. Chapter Twelve Laketon Resort Indoor Swimming Pool 12 noon "See what I mean?" Doggett tried to open the second door of the Laketon Resort's swimming pool room with the first one open but it wouldn't budge. Reyes closed the first door and then the second opened easily. They felt the cool air hit them like a pleasurable sea wave. "I've seen this device used before. It's obvious they want to keep the cool air in." "Why Monica? Why would they go to all this extra expense and effort for a few lousy rushes of cool air into the atmosphere outside?" Reyes took Doggett's hand and they made their way to the change rooms. On the way they passed a number of tourists who were visibly enjoying the respite from the heat outside. "Come on, I have a few ideas. Let's go for that swim we know we both need to cool down and we can talk." They'd both stopped by the general store in the township to buy some swimsuits. There wasn't a big range. Reyes had found a simple black one piece. She didn't even try it on. Anything she wore she knew she'd attract Doggett's eye. He on the other hand decided to buy a pair of Speedos because that's all they had in their minimal range. As they met at the poolside they both smiled at each other's reactions to the way they were dressed. "Monica, how am I possibly going to be objective about this case with you dressed like that?" "It's just an ordinary swimsuit." He leant in and whispered, "But it's on an incredible body." "Why thankyou John. You're not so bad yourself." She raised her eyebrows, as she noticeably looked him up and down. "Come on, let's do a few laps then we need to talk." This was certainly a welcome relief from the heat. They felt a little guilty having fun while on a case but this was a good way to cool down and hopefully open their minds to what was going on in the town. After a few laps they met at one end of the pool. "So Monica, you said you might know what's happening here?" "I don't know what's causing the heatwave, that's what we still must discover. What I do know is that Meyers is in on this somehow. I think that in fact the whole township is involved." "How do you figure?" "Just by looking around you John. Everyone's been behaving as though this is all quite normal. Why is it that no one seems to wants to change things, they're quite happy the way things are?" Doggett nodded, "Because they all know what's going on and are covering up whatever it is." "Exactly." "I have a very strong hunch that we're going to find out something about their little secret in that quarry out of town." "John, hold me!" Reyes suddenly clung to Doggett and planted a kiss on his lips. When she finally let go Doggett questioned, "What was that for?" We have to be careful here." Reyes just whispered in his ear. "See that man over there by the pot plant?" Doggett complied and spoke quietly, "Yes, what about him?" "He's not one of the tourists." "How so?" "Notice him shivering? He's trying hard to hide the fact that he's cold. Now kiss me again John so he doesn't become suspicious." Reyes pinned her partner against the pool edge and they kissed again. Holding each other close they spoke quietly into each other's ears. "I think Meyers must have replaced our spy after our encounter with Martin." "That's going to make breaking into the quarry a little difficult." Doggett began kissing and licking Reyes' neck as though they were still making out. His hand roamed over her back. Reyes closed her eyes and sighed. "We're either going to have to out wit them John or go during the night when it's dark." He licked her earlobe. Reyes found herself not being able to fully concentrate on what Doggett was saying but rather on what his mouth and hands were doing. He then turned her around and pinned her against the side of the pool and began licking the ridges of her other ear. "Monica, I think we're going to have to go back to our cabin to continue our *chat* in bed." This was also turning on Doggett. "Don't you remember how hot it is there? Maybe there's somewhere here we can go for more privacy." ...................... Reyes handed Doggett his towel as he got out of the pool. He tied it around his middle and they walked down a short passageway and found a door at the end that was labelled . "I didn't see any babies here did you Monica?" He didn't wait for an answer but just opened it and pulled Reyes inside. Locking the door he lead her over to the couch that was probably provided for the comfort of nursing mothers. "So where did our conversation leave off Mon?" "I think we were talking about somehow getting into the quarry." "Oh yes." He sat on the couch and pulled her closer so that she was lying on top of him and began nuzzling and kissing her neck. "We shouldn't be doing this John." "Why not?" He kissed along one shoulder and brought her swimsuit strap down in the process. "Because we're on a case. What will Skinner say to us about this?" "What did you tell him on the phone?" His fingers linked with the other strap and also moved it over her shoulder, licking and sucking as he went. "Well first of all he said... ahhhh." Doggett had pulled the straps right down to her waist and was tracing circles around one nipple with his tongue. Before proceeding the other breast he looked up and smiled at his lover's reaction. "He said ahhhh did he?" He chuckled at the thought then began sucking the other nipple. "He said that he's was told we'd been seen having sex on the pontoon in the middle of the lake." Reyes' heart was beating very fast now as he moved the swimsuit down her body further. He rolled her onto her back so she was reclined over the end of the couch. As he slowly took the swimsuit down he kissed the skin as he went until he was at her toes and her attire flopped to the ground. Between slow kisses up her legs Doggett spoke. "And how did you respond?" It took a moment for Reyes to catch her breath especially when he reached her thighs and began moving her legs apart. "I put the question back at him?" Her eyes were closed now as she felt the heat of his tongue and his breath between her legs. "Which was?" The vibration of his voice on her clit sent waves of pleasure through her body. Then his tongue was on her, sweeping along one side of her clit then the other making it very difficult for her to talk. "I asked him," Reyes took a few breaths as he plunged his tongue inside her, moving it in and out. "If he believed.... we would have..... sex in the open.... like that." He then alternated between fucking her with his tongue and sucking her clit. "He.... took....the....point." As she became absorbed in all his attention to her body she then found it almost impossible to talk. "I have... an idea....about the.... quarry." That's all she could get out before her vocal chords gave out. Doggett could tell that what he'd been doing was very arousing for her but wanted to be inside her for this orgasm. He gently coaxed her into a sitting position and then took down his Speedos revealing a very ready erection. Sitting down on the couch he helped her on top of him. With knees beside his hips she sat down slowly allowing him to penetrate her completely. Reyes almost collapsed on him from the exquisite feel of his solid cock inside her again like this. They both moved together all the time Doggett nuzzled Reyes' neck and ran his hands down over the velvety skin of her back. Neither of them spoke but rather put their energies into this act of love for each other. Each thrust was a little bit of heaven; each hand movement on their bodies pure bliss. It had been a long time since Doggett had had sex this good, with someone he truly loved. The moment was all too much. He could feel her pulsating on his cock and her breasts heaving and he had to let go. Wave after wave filled her as their bodies floated on the choppy sea. The ripples became calmer as they both came to shore onto solid earth. Still holding each other tightly Doggett was the first to speak, "What's that quarry idea you were talking about Mon?" Doggett smiled slyly. After a moment's reflection of what had just happened between them she responded, "I suppose we'd better get dressed then I'll tell you on the way." .............................. Chapter Thirteen Laketon Resort Indoor Swimming Pool 12.45pm "Don't look now but see that couple over there, the ones who look as though they're on their honeymoon?" "Yes, and?" "I suggest we ask for their help." Reyes took Doggett's hand and led him towards them. "Come on John, play along." "Excuse me," Reyes said in her sweetest voice to the couple lying on twin deck chairs. "Hello I'm Monica and this is John." They looked a little astonished so Reyes continued. "We were wondering whether you could help us. We're FBI agents here to investigate this strange weather and we've run into a little trouble." "Okay, I'm Graeme and this is my wife Trudi, what do you want us to do?" Reyes looked them over and realised they would work perfectly for her plan. "Come back to our cabin and we'll explain there. Just act as though you're coming back with us for friendly conversation." Trudi and Graeme exchange glances and generally seemed to regard it as an adventure. They all collected their belongings and left passing by the evident intruder along the way. Once inside Reyes explained about their case and that someone had been sent to spy on them, following their every move. Doggett was listening on and smiling waiting for this plan of his partner's. "We're wanting to go an investigate an old quarry just out of town that the local police say has nothing to do with this but we're not convinced." "So where do we come in?" asked Trudi. "We want you to pretend to be us to throw the spy off track." "Good plan Monica, I'm impressed. How should we go about this?" Doggett stood there eyebrows raised quite keen to hear her thoughts. "We swap clothing and then Trudi and Graeme here take our car and lead the man on a merry chase." "So how are we meant to get to the quarry with no transport? We can't walk, it's like a desert out there." "Take ours," mentioned a matter of fact Trudi. She went to her bag and produced a set of keys and gave them to Reyes. "It's outside cabin fourteen, the dark green Caprice." "Okay," Monica grinned. "It's a deal then. We can meet later after we're successful." They exchanged clothing and then was the time of deception. They had swapped clothes and all wore sunglasses. Reyes had her hair tied up like Trudi's. "Well we're set. I say we go first," mentioned Doggett. "We'll walk to your cabin. That should distract the guy long enough for you to leave and get into our car. There's a good chance that he'll think we are heading off and follow you two. By the time he realises what's happened we'll be well into our quarry visit." All went off perfectly and the agents were once again on their way to the quarry. "Has this thing got any climate control Mon? It's a sweat box in here." "I'm looking John but I can't find it." Reyes ran her fingers over the various knobs then just shook her head. "Looks like our friends got the better deal here. They're driving around in comfort and we're in a sauna." Reyes laughed at Doggett's humor. "Here we are Monica and no one's on our tails this time." He parked the vehicle a short way from the fence and as they got out they kept an eye on the road behind them. There were no traffic sounds. The coast was clear. "Chains." Doggett called to Reyes who was looking for an alternate way to get in. The fence was just too high to climb. "What?" "The gate is locked with chains and a padlock." Doggett went back to the car and found the tire iron and linked it through the padlock and with a good amount of force twisted it until it shattered in pieces. "Bingo." They were no free to search. There was not much there really. The grassed area around them was bare of any other vegetation. The ground was rough under their feet suggesting that large vehicles had passed over it at one time. The quarry was about a ten minute walk from the gate but had clearly been abandoned a while back. "Well John, I can't see anything here that they'd want to cover up." Reyes finally spoke. "Just grass, dirt and more dirt." "I'm not convinced Monica. You saw the look on both Martin's and Meyers' faces when they talked about this place. They're hiding something alright and I'm damned if I'm going to find it." He moved on assuredly. After about fifteen minutes of seeming fruitless search Doggett heard Reyes calling from about seventy metres away. "John, come here!" He ran over and saw Reyes on bended knees surveying the ground. "What have you found?" "Look down here, they're all over the place." Over about a ten square metre area were numbers of bore holes into the earth. "What do you make of this Monica?" "Looks to me like core samples." "Core samples." "Yes, I believe probably a team of geologists were taking samples from the earth here. They can bore down a long way and bring up the layers of dirt that has accumulated over time. That way they can study the evolution of the earth over time." "So you think that this might have something to do with the heatwave." "They may have found something that has been let loose in the atmosphere; something never seen before." "So you're saying that this thing that has been let out into the air deliberately covers a circle of six miles radius and then stops? That's a bit far fetched Monica even for you." "It's just a theory; stranger things have been know to have happened." "You're telling me," said Doggett under his breath. Reyes got out her sample bag, retrieved a small vial and collected some of the dirt. "Let's send this back to the lab and see what they come up with." Reyes held the bag and studied it up to the light. "Well I hope they do find something because I think we're clutching at straws here. Let's go Mon. If that sample comes up negative then we'll send in a team to scour this place." "Either way John, if it turns out there is something here we'll have a swarm of people all over the place." Something just then dawned on Reyes. Their deception had worked but they were both disappointed that there wasn't more; something more tangible to make leeway into the case. Chapter Fourteen Laketon Resort Reception 2 pm The heat haze in the distance was almost hypnotizing as they drove back to the newlyweds' cabin. Why didn't they have air conditioning in their car? They must have rented it from a place in the township. They needed respite from the harsh atmosphere and quickly but first they had to find a way to send their dirt sample from the quarry back to the FBI for testing. After entering the resort once again they parked the car outside cabin fourteen. Finding the newlyweds not in they headed to Reception. Doggett walked up to the front desk and spoke once again to Karen the resort's receptionist. Reyes was close behind. "Do you have a post office around here or courier service maybe?" He held up a white envelope with something bulging inside. "Oh hello Agents, there's one in town." Doggett nodded but waited almost expecting her to go on. "I'm going into town in a bit. If you have something to send I can take care of that for you." "That's really good of you Karen. We'll take you up on that offer." Reyes looked over with what her partner knew was concern on her face As he spoke he handed the package to Karen who put it under her arm. "We need it to get to the FBI Headquarters lab in DC as soon as it can. We'd like it to get there today if possible." Doggett deliberately watched Karen's body language with one of his transparent expressions as Reyes still appeared concerned. It was only as they exited the mansion that Reyes spoke softly, "Why did you do that John?" She touched his arm as they made their way back to their cabin. They both made the observation that Trudi and Graeme were indeed back when they saw their car parked outside their cabin. "You know we both don't trust her. I don't believe any of the locals here." When they were safely back inside Doggett reached into his pocket and produced a familiar looking vial. "John, you sneak! So you're trying to catch them out?" "Let's just see where this one goes shall we? I don't think the fake sample will be going anywhere except straight into Detective Shithead's hands, do you?" Reyes laughed. She loved the way her partner was a no nonsense guy. She also loved the way they worked together; their methods and ideas in tandem yet complimentary. "Okay John so how do we send the real sample off without attracting that butt bug out there?" Doggett produced one of his smiles again that indicated to her he knew exactly what to do. "That's where our honeymooners may come in handy again." He went to retrieve two postal envelopes and began addressing the outside of one. "They can post this for us in town hopefully without attracting undue attention." "But won't the post office attendant become suspicious if it's addressed to the FBI?" "Ah," Doggett showed her the envelope and what he'd written. "Addressed to Walter Skinner, good one John. Now we just have to get it them. That leech is bound to follow us." Without another word he got out of his seat and headed for the kitchen. When he arrived back he lifted the second envelope and placed a saltshaker inside. "I suggest I take our car and lead our spy guy on a merry goose chase while you convince our new friends to do yet another good deed for us." Reyes liked that plan. Trudi and Graeme had left the car keys under the door so Doggett had them safely in his hand. Before leaving he took one last look at his partner and saw his newly acquired lover. Before leaving he was compelled to go to her and wrap his protective arms around her. "You be careful now, I never want anything bad to happen to you." He said this in the most seductive voice she'd heard so far and kissed her lightly on the lips at first going in for a second and a third. Then as he hugged her closer the kiss grew more heated. If it wasn't for the fact that this solving this case was important for them they'd be back in the bedroom once again in sexual union. "Monica, I promise when all this is over," He spoke breathlessly into her hair. "I'll take you away for the weekend, just the two of us to somewhere nice and cool." Reyes suddenly forgot the heat, all she wanted to do was finish this too. The idea of spending a weekend of sex with this man whenever they wanted it was suddenly quite energizing. She could see them staying in bed all weekend only venturing out to visit the bathroom and to eat. Even eating was optional. "If you put it that way John, let's do it." He gave her one last prolonged kiss and then left with a final loving yet determined look over his shoulder. .............. Reyes waited about ten minutes after her partner had left before she ventured out into the heat with the envelope in search of Trudi and Graeme. This time the honeymooners were back and agreed to help out again. Meanwhile Doggett took the spy on a meandering circuit of the countryside. The agent thought to himself how dumb this person must be to really believe he had an objective. A couple of times he stopped the car, got out with the white envelope under his arm then stepped back inside. This was to remind his follower he still had the sample. When he arrived back at the cabin Reyes was trying to cool off with a cold drink and standing under the ceiling fan. Her hair was slicked back and her neck glistened as a result of the excessive heat. "So did you convince them?" Doggett also went to get himself a cool drink. "You kidding? They felt complimented that they could help the FBI on a case like this." "Well we're screwed if they're really two of the townsfolk." He came back with a can of Coke and stood next to her under the somewhat cooling fan. "I know John, I'd thought of that too but I don't believe it. I can just feel we can trust them. Anyway I've rung Skinner and told him what to expect. I also outlined everything we've come across so far. He's as suspicious now as we are. He said if they find anything in the sample he'd send out a team as soon as possible to investigate further." "Did he say anything more about these sexual allegations against us?" "No John but I could tell it was on his mind. He just wants us to solve this case; it's been on the books for too long. We may have to face music afterwards though." Doggett turned to Reyes and ran a thumb over her cheek wiping away the sweat. "No matter what Monica, I wanna be with you. We've waited too long to be together just to break it apart because of our jobs." "But they may not let us work as partners any more." He rubbed his coke can over her neck eliciting a pleasant groan. "I don't care. I didn't particular want the X-Files in the first place. I was only there to find Mulder when he went missing. I found him but now I'm still here. Why? Look Monica, if it means me moving to a different division would that be so bad?" He moved the Coke can down to her breasts remembering the way yesterday she had tantalised him. He could see her nipples harden then moved the can down over her breastbone to her stomach. "Oh John, we can't, not now." Her pulse was racing and she just knew that her lover was ready for more sex. "Yes we can." He said very seductively as he took the drink can from her hand and laid both hers and his on the floor. His hands slid around her butt and he drew her in closer. Reyes felt a little proud that Doggett was so easily turned on by her. Hips solidly joined they swayed together. "Really John, our friends said they'd meet us at the pool for an afternoon swi.." Before she could even finish her sentence Doggett had responded with his lips on hers catching her final words. This time his kiss was almost trying to persuade her that the two of them tied in sexual union was more important than keeping a deadline. As Reyes' legs became weak she found herself falling slowly to the ground. Doggett followed her every move down to lie on the floor. She held onto him for support until he lay her head gently down and moved on top still kissing her. She felt herself give into him with a sudden thrill rushing through her body. Her legs parted and he rested his crotch against hers just moving slowly to let her feel him growing more and more against her. This was so erotic feeling his desire for her grow physically. "Still want to be on time for our meeting Mon?" He didn't wait for an answer but started slowly taking Reyes shorts then panties down on their slippery path to her bare feet and off. He once again lay on her running kisses over her neck then back to her mouth. The closeness of his hard cock right near her entrance but cooped up in his pants was turning her on more and more. Doggett kept tantalizing her with his mouth until he received a sign Reyes had given in, then reached for his shorts button then zip. While crouched over her, looking into her dreamy eyes, he took his pants and underwear off without her realizing. Then he was right there at her entrance teasing her clit with his erection. "I didn't hear what you said Mon." He was not going to enter her until she'd made herself clear. "Just do it." Reyes was desperate. He was so tantalizing that it almost hurt for him not to be inside her. "But we'll be late." He mocked. With that she reached down and began playing with his erection. Her fingers wound around it and moved up and down the thick shaft. Some fingers lightly touched his balls at times. Now who was teasing whom? Doggett wanted to enter her but each time she moved his cock away until she felt it trembling in her hands. Without even looking she knew that the veins in his neck would be exposed due to his heightened arousal. When she thought he could take no more she guided him into her with hips slowly thrusting upward. The hard floor under them was forgotten as their soft, moist flesh once more joined in this ultimate act of love. Reyes was in another realm as he slowly pumped away building the momentum up ever so slowly. She could tell he was holding off for her. His eyes and body said it all. She started becoming faster and more audible to let him know that she wanted him to make her come. He let out the breath he'd been holding and moved more rapidly in her. Her legs went as wide as they could to accommodate all of him. Doggett felt the fan cooling his neck and legs as he made love to the beautiful woman below him. Moving down to her face he licked over her eyebrows and along her cheekbones. The fan above cooled the wetness he left behind. His mouth hovered over hers as he thrust into her below. She could taste the saltiness of her sweat on his tongue as he gave her many fevered kisses. Her hands slid under his T-shirt and lifted it to expose his sweaty back to the cooling fan. Her hands then slid down running over his butt and thighs, committing to memory every sexy curve. A wave of sheer love for this man overtook her as she came throbbing wildly on his member inside her. Her heart fluttered and her chest heaved with the mere intensity. The feeling was heightened by his gush of warmth she felt inside her. Doggett gave a few final pushes and then flopped his head smiling into her dreamy, happy eyes. There was sweat dripping from his face and she felt the welcome drops on hers. He chuckled a little as he pulled out slowly and lay beside her on the floor. Reyes felt his seed running out of her and felt warmth at the thought of him giving a part of himself to her. "I think I need a shower before swimming John." Reyes looked up at the ceiling not wanting to move just yet. Doggett was equally drained. "Me too but I suggest we have one there though. The water's a little too hot here." It took a while for either of them to move. Doggett was the first, he rolled over and gave her another wonderful kiss then got up and took Reyes hands to help her up also. They each made a bathroom visit and dressed again. They took their swim suits and a fresh set of clothes with them to change into after their swim. "So I wonder if there are any babies who need changing there now?" "Is that all you think of? We're here to solve a case don't forget," Doggett mocked as they opened the door to the still searing heat. .................. This time there were only a handful of pool users. Doggett and Reyes felt the cool air on their sweltering bodies and audibly expressed relief. Doggett took Reyes' hand as they made their way to the change rooms. Trudi and Graeme hadn't arrived yet so they both knew they had time to shower. All of a sudden Reyes felt a little lightheaded and almost toppled over. Strangely enough Doggett felt the same way and also noticed his partner's disorientation. Before either of them could utter any words their world faded away and all went black. ............................ Chapter Fifteen Unknown Place Reyes woke up to find her self in a bed in what looked like a hospital room. She peered under the covers to see that she wore a hospital gown. There was absolutely no recollection of how she'd come to be in that situation. John, where was he? Had this happened to him too, whatever 'this' was? The room was stifling hot and she felt wet all over from the sweat that had accumulated since being brought there. They had to solve this weird case and get the hell out of that town. First she needed to find her partner. Getting out of bed was not as easy as first thought as she toppled right back after a wave of nausea swept over her. Just then a nurse entered the room. "Not so fast Ms. Reyes, you need more rest." Checking her forehead she put the cover back over her. "What's happened to me and where is my partner?" "First of all Mr. Doggett is all right. He's still sleeping in another ward." "I want to see him." "All in good time, you've both just had a nasty case of heat stroke and need your rest. It happens all the time with tourists here." Reyes was not convinced that she'd had heat stroke at all. There was something that wasn't right; she just couldn't quite put her finger on it. Why had they both been affected at exactly the same time? Reyes couldn't help feeling it all had something to do with that quarry and the soil sample they'd collected. "When can I see John?" Reyes was missing her lover's closeness already. "How about I go and see if he's awake and then I'll bring him to see you." Reyes was happy with that suggestion and lay back and closed her eyes as the nurse left. Reyes had nodded off and was woken by her cell phone ringing from somewhere in the room. Carefully she made her way to the sound having to hold onto furniture as she went. The closet door slid open and where she'd expected to see her clothes and possessions was only her cell phone. 'That's odd,' she spoke out loud to herself. A later search of the rest of the room would also reveal that indeed she had no other belongings. "Reyes." "You've been hiding out on me Agent Reyes." The detective's rough voice was not welcome to the ears at this time. "Do you know what I have here in my hot little hand?" It didn't take much imagination for her to picture a white envelope addressed to the FBI. "No, what?" "You don't know what you're doing. This is a big mistake." "It is? You tell me why Detective. What are you and the townsfolk not telling us? It's something in that soil sample isn't it?" "You're not welcome in our town any more Agent Reyes. You've done enough snooping. We want you and Agent Doggett and the FBI to leave today and not come back." His voice was harsher than she'd heard before. "We're not leaving until we have all the facts. You can't threaten us." Reyes felt her blood simmering. "You give me no other choice then. If you haven't left our town by six this evening then I'm just going to have to tell your superiors what you were doing in Agent Doggett's bed last night and on the floor of your cabin this afternoon." Reyes' blood was now boiling but she knew she had to keep a level head. This breech of privacy was inexcusable. She had to call his bluff though. "All right, Agent Doggett and myself are lovers. Go ahead and accuse all you like but it's not going to stop us finding answers here." The phone went dead. .......................... "All right you two, you can have fifteen minutes then the doctor needs to check you over." The nurse had wheeled her partner to her bedside in a wheelchair. When the nurse left Doggett moved shakily over to Reyes and embraced her. "What happened to us John?" As he lay next to her on the bed he spoke, "Have they left you any clothes?" Doggett looked to check there was no one around before he spoke. "No, why is that?" Doggett then responded in a quiet whisper, "I got a call from the AD on my cell phone just before the nurse came to bring me here. It seems that the lab got our soil sample okay and there is definitely something about it that's very puzzling." "Tell me John." "They're sending out a team as we speak. It's all very hush hush given that we told Skinner the townsfolk are being cagey." "Do we have any more to go on?" Again Doggett looked around. "Yes, apparently there is something in that sample that the lab assistants haven't ever seen before. The sample is filled with pollen and spores never before seen by any scientists. Looks like that team of geologists unearthed it all when digging core samples. The guys in the lab can only surmise that the team all died. AD Skinner's looking into that part of the case now." "They all died John, how does he figure?" "Well you know what happened to us?" "I don't know what happened to us." Reyes could tell that her partner knew more than she. "Apparently the pollen is deadly if inhaled. Looks like that's how the geologists died. "But John we're not dead." "We must have had pollen and spores on us from digging around in the quarry. When we came in contact with the cool air at the swimming pool that's when it started to affect us." "So John you're saying that the hot atmosphere here is somehow keeping the pollen and spores dormant so they can't hurt anyone?" "Exactly." "So they destroyed our clothing to get rid of the hazardous materials in case we took it back with us into the cool air once more. That still doesn't explain the constant heat and humidity here." "That's what Skinner and his team are working on now. This is man-made Monica. Someone is responsible for generating this heat to keep the spores and pollen dormant." "I got a threatening call from Detective Meyers just before you came in. He wants us out." "Wouldn't I like to drag that guy's sorry ass to jail. I just know his hands are dirty on this one Mon. Don't worry we will find out what's going on." "So what should we do next?" "We get out of this place. Skinner's said we have done all we can this end and he's pleased with what we've done. He's expecting us back in DC as soon as possible." That was a welcome thought. They were both eager to get back to some sort of normality. Each also knew that they would have to face Skinner explaining the sexual allegations made about them by Detective Meyers. Chapter Sixteen X-Files Basement Office Both agents chatted happily as they padded out of the elevator and down the hallway to their basement office. "The air conditioning doesn't seem to have been fixed yet." Reyes felt her face go warm as they approached their office door. "Well if it's not fixed I'm going to demand us another office until it is. We can't work under these conditions Mon." Doggett opened the door and let Reyes through first. They each went through their ritual of taking off their jackets and hanging them on the coat rack. "John," Reyes' voice sounded ominous. Doggett turned to her then followed her gaze to his desk. It had been totally cleared of all files, papers, stationery, not a skerrick was left on top. The agents' jaws dropped in disbelief. ...................... Doggett sat slumped at his desk just staring at the smooth surface, his mind going wild with all the possibilities. "John, look at it this way, it's not all your fault. Why would your position here be in jeopardy and not mine? I had just as much involvement in our relationship as you. Do you see my desk cleared? There's something else here and we need to meet with the assistant director shortly to find out what." When Doggett hadn't moved Reyes went up and took his warm hand in both of hers. "John, if you're dismissed then I'm leaving too. It would be so unfair. I want you; I want us. Come on get up please." Tugging on his hand eventually brought him to his feet and she wrapped her arms around him and rested her head on his chest. "Monica please don't do that, not just for me. This is the job you've wanted. If the worst happens, it won't be the worst because I'll still have you. You will be my reason to go on." He placed his hands on her shoulders to look into her eyes. "Monica I love you." Reyes' smile widened. "I love you too John." They both kissed and hugged each other as though they would never part. They both took solace in that they shared mutual affection and would support each other through thick and thin. ......................... AD Skinner's Office "Why sir?" Doggett brow furrowed and he held his hands out as he entered the room after Reyes. "We helped solve this case." "Sit down Agent Doggett," Skinner motioned them to a chair without answering Doggett's question. "You too Agent Reyes." Reyes tried to read Skinner's expression. It was sort of non-descript, neither happy nor angry, just matter-of-fact. "Is it because of what Detective Meyers said about us because we can keep that to ourselves sir? It doesn't need to come to the office it can stay within our four walls at home." Skinner just sat there almost with a smug look Reyes thought. "Sir, it was my fault too, why Agent Doggett and not me? We can't help having feelings for each other but I agree with my partner here that we can contain them." Skinner shifted in his chair ready to talk. "We'll get on to that shortly but first I want to discuss the case with you." Doggett expressed a mixture of frustration and resolve. They were getting rid of a good, hard-working agent who had an excellent case record. Reyes showed a slight frown as she sat back in her seat waiting for the assistant director to talk. "We all must commend you on your excellent work here agents. Thanks to you two this drawn out case has been solved." "So sir please fill us in on the details. We know that the soil and the atmosphere in Laketon holds the plants spores and pollen and that the heat makes them dormant somehow but where and how is that heat generated?" Reyes posed the question they were both eager to ask. "Glad you asked Agent Reyes. We looked back over any records of the townsfolk and found one name that stood out. His name is Professor Paul Kinney." "Haven't heard of him. What's his involvement in all this?" Doggett was still curious. "He used to work at the state's main power plant and you'll never guess his specialty." "No what?" "Geothermal Physics." "So," Reyes was slowly getting the picture. "You're saying that somehow this Professor Kinney made some sort of geothermal device or machine that keeps the area hot enough to protect the township from inhaling the toxic substances?" "Geothermal?' Doggett was lost. "Yes John, he must have built a machine or machines that generate heat. Maybe they're underground and that's why we didn't see anything else suspicious there." She turned to Skinner. "Am I right sir?" "That's right Agent Reyes. In fact six devices have been located in various places around the town spread in such a patter that it forms a perfect circle of heat with a radius of six miles." "Okay," It was Doggett's turn to talk. He wanted justice for this cover-up. "So what happens now? Someone's gotta pay for this cover-up. There have been deaths here and deep deception." "And yes there will be. The town's detective.." "Detective Meyers." Doggett said almost with a snarl. "I take it you weren't on good terms?" "That slimy fuck needs the book thrown at him." "And it will be. He's in DC for questioning as we speak. Put it this way, it seems he instigated the whole matter and threatened the townsfolk if any of them spoke. Many moved away because of his unwanted intervention or just stayed and got used to the weather." "Talking about the weather," Reyes interjected. "What happens now?" "The people are quite happy with their circumstances. The local university is studying the pollen and spores and working on a way for them to be able to restore their original weather but for now it will remain hot." Both Reyes and Doggett seemed at home with all these explanations. "Now about you too and your relationship." Doggett and Reyes moved uncomfortably in their seats waiting for what they both knew they'd have to face eventually. "You both know that a relationship based on more than friendship cannot be tolerated here in your situations. You have more than admitted to me that you are indeed carrying on a sexual relationship with each other so for that reason I'm putting you both on suspension for two weeks." The partners looked at each other wondering if they'd heard correctly. "So I haven't been dismissed sir?" Doggett was almost relieved. Suspension he could handle. Dismissal from the FBI would be something that would permanently mar his track record and may make it difficult to secure any other job in law enforcement, the area he was devoted to. "What about my desk sir?" Skinner got out of his seat and both pairs of eyes followed him across the room behind them. He picked up a large cardboard and came over to hand it to Doggett. "I don't understand." He took the box and looked inside as he rested it on his lap. It did indeed contain his desk's belongings. Skinner went to sit again while the agents waited for explanation. "Agent Reyes, you're to stay in the X-Files and we'll assign you a new partner as soon as possible." Reyes was just nodding. She was happy that her job was still secure. Her worry turned to the concerned man beside her. If he was demoted and not her then it would be so unfair. In her ponderings she almost missed what the assistant director said. "You will no longer be a special agent," Doggett's heart was thumping at the anticipation. Skinner got out of his seat and walked to him with his hand out. Doggett put the box on the floor and stood slowly. As Skinner began to shake his hand he explained. "Congratulations Assistant Director Doggett." "What?" Reyes vocalized what her former partner was thinking. "You have had an exemplary record here at the FBI and it's way past time that you were rewarded for it. Kersh put you down in the X-Files for reasons we all know and since then I've been looking for a position to come free more suited to your talents and interests. I am now looking at the new Assistant Director of the Violent Crimes Unit." Reyes and Doggett couldn't believe what was happening. This was the opportunity of their dreams. It left them with jobs they would both enjoy and they could still continue their loving relationship. "Go on then," Skinner motioned with his head to the door. "Your new office is on the third floor. Set it all up and your new position will be waiting for you after two weeks." "Thankyou sir, I don't know what to say." "Just go." Reyes and Doggett walked down the hallway to the elevator to take to the third floor. Moments passed without words, each thinking about the new life ahead of them to love each other freely. "So John, what will we do for two weeks? I thought I might go and visit my family." Doggett looked across to his former partner and saw the huge grin she sported. "You're not serious." "So you want to spend the next two weeks with me?" Her voice was lighter. "I wouldn't want to spend it with anyone else." They were in the elevator alone and Doggett leaned across to kiss her lips. "So let's go away somewhere. What do you say John." "Right now Alaska sounds good." The elevator doors opened and they stepped out both smiling inwardly knowing it wouldn't be hard deciding on what they'd do for the next two weeks. Epilogue Reyes' Apartment So they were on suspension. They both knew that this was only a formality and that Skinner had little choice in suspending them for their inappropriate actions on the job. For all they knew the Assistant Director was probably smirking right now knowing they'd be together loving every minute of the next fortnight. Two weeks without pay would be a little harsh but it was all worth it for the happiness they both felt in each other's company. Doggett was a little annoyed that the obnoxious Meyers had been set free with no evidence as yet of his involvement in the Laketon cover-up but it would only be a matter of time before something was found that would land him in prison. He did have solace in the fact that he too was on suspension from his law enforcement role and may never return due to the revelation that he'd been having an affair with the mayor's wife. This was the agent's first evening back in DC and they'd decided to spend it at Reyes' apartment. The lights were low and the mood tranquil. Reyes had an idea about how they could spend the next few minutes before going to bed. She produced a heap of her early childhood photos from a smaller box she'd retrieved form her room. John's eyes widened as he picked up a few and studied them. "Mon, I didn't think they took naked baby shots any more. Isn't it too much of an embarrassment at twenty-first birthday parties?" He chuckled as she snatched the photo out of his hand and looked. Her face flushed at the site of her in the bath being washed by her mom. Without talking about her embarrassment she put it behind her on the floor and changed the subject. "So John, when do I get to see some of your early photos?" He continued to look through the stack, every now and then turning his head to see one that was on an angle. His eyes told all about his feelings as he scrolled through. He loved her; he loved looking at every image he saw. He looked up at her every now and then almost comparing the then to now. "Monica, you were beautiful then and you're even more beautiful now." She moved over to sit next to him and they shared the visual memories. Those words of his helped her melt into his body. Her head rested on his shoulder as he went through the rest of the photos slowly, almost too slowly. She felt his breathing more audibly and knew that he was responding to her closeness. She moved her arm around his waist and sank even deeper into his shoulder. This gave him the signal that she wanted more. "Mon," she felt his chest rise and fall and knew that he was responding to more than the photos. Her hand traced lines down his thighs to his knees then up to his hips. She took the photos out of his hands and placed them on the table all the time looking into his eyes. "John, you don't need to see photos when you can have the real image." Doggett knew exactly what Reyes was thinking. He took her hand and led her to the bedroom. .............. Reyes couldn't remember the last time a man had slept in her bed. All the nights she'd dreamt of this man beside her under the sheets paled against the fact that it was actually going to happen. The feel of his strong hand in hers was all she needed to know that this was just the start of a night filled with pleasure and passion beyond belief. "So Mon, show me the real image. I want to see a real naked Monica." Next to the bed he took her in his arms and squashed her body against his. Her arms found their way around his waist and she hugged him tightly and breathed in taking in his wonderful smell. He then pulled away and lay back on the bed with a smug expression. "Go on, show me." Reyes knew exactly what her lover wanted and was not shy to show him either. He'd seen her naked a few times now but hadn't seen him actually watching her. His was such an expressive face; she wanted to see his reaction first hand as she undressed. "What would you like to see first?' Her fingertips lightly traced her body, over her breasts and stomach, then down over her hips to her thighs. This gesture alone elicited a wide-eyed almost panting look on her lover's face. He was putty in her hands at that point. "Anything you want to show me Mon." She moved up to the bed and went into kiss him just leaving a little distance between them. As his lips almost met hers she moved back again teasing him. She was going to make him ache for her. Her fingers went to the button of her pants and undid it and then the zip. She pulled them down slowly over her hips and then turned to wriggle them all the way off. This gave Doggett a view of her ass and although she couldn't see him she heard his breathing and knew he like what he saw. Her thumbs hooked the elastic of her panties and she bent right over as she drew them down her legs and kicked them off. "Monica, come here." Reyes knew that Doggett was hot for her but was not going to let him have what he wanted just yet. Teasing him more she moved to the side of the bed just out of reach of his arm trying to touch her. "Please Mon, I want you now." "Uh uh," she shook her head. Not until you see me totally naked." Her fingertips went to her shirt buttons and she unclasped them ever so slowly showing a little bit more cleavage each time. "Do you want to touch me John? Do you want to make love to me now?" "Yes, come here now." Her eyes went to the obvious bulge in his pants and felt pleasure at being able to turn him on like that. When the buttons were exhausted she pulled the shirt off leaving her just in her bra. Turning around again she undid the clasp and let the flimsy garment drift to the floor. "Oh Mon, you're beautiful." She could feel his eyes burning holes in her bare flesh. As she turned she witnessed the transformation on his already aroused face. He really liked what he saw as she moved closer standing just out of reach again. "So what do you want now John?" "I want to touch you Mon." Then was the time to get closer and she found herself wondering what part of her he'd touch first. ................. His hands felt wonderful as they trailed over her stomach then down to her dark curls and between her legs. Her legs widened accepting his manual attention. His fingers felt the readiness for him and she found herself almost toppling as he ran circles around her clit and then slip inside her. His thumb massaged her clit as two fingers pumped her internally. She had to hold the headboard of the bed for support as she felt a wave of pure ecstasy encompassed her body. Seeing and feeling her release, with his other hand he reached for her arm and pulled her onto him. As he did so his fingers slipped out and she felt a rush of cool air where they'd been. How did he do this to her so quickly? She heard a little chuckle and knew that Doggett felt proud that he could bring her to orgasm like that. Laying on top of him they kissed as his hands felt down her spine tracing all the curves of her back and ass. Reyes felt her strength returning again and sat up to undo Doggett's shirt buttons. His clothing was a lot quicker to come off. In no time they lay there together warm skin touching and kissing. As he rolled her over onto her back he moved her legs apart and Reyes knew that her lover was ready for the physical union they both craved. His cock teased her still sensitive clit a little before he pushed inside her. All their past love-making rushed into her mind as he gave her very special attention with his body. This man making love to her was a godsend. Not only was he wonderful to look at but he loved and cared deeply for her and he was a perfect bed partner. She had never had two orgasms so close together before but this was happening all over again. Doggett felt Reyes' body tense beneath him and knew she was coming for a second time. He'd held on as long as he could and now was relieved he could let go. He'd never felt this experience of mutual orgasm as profoundly as he did with his lover. They rode the currents in tandem letting each other call out their names in ecstasy. Doggett let his head slip down with exhaustion but was careful not to put any weight on Reyes. He looked into her eyes and loved what he saw; the aftermath of his lovemaking to her. She had contentment and love written all over her. They gave one final kiss before Doggett lay beside her holding closer then close. "So Monica, what do you want to do for the next two weeks?" She snuggled in closer to his warm, taut body under the sheets and found herself lightly kissing his chest. "I can't get my mind past the bedroom John. How about we stay just like this forever." "That's fine with me." He nuzzled into her hair feeling its silky softness. "How did you spend your suspension John?" he mimicked. "Oh, in bed making love to a beautiful, sexy woman. Half your luck!" He felt her laughter on his chest and he smiled into her hair. Doggett couldn't get his mind past the bedroom either. The real end - of this part of the story that is... 46
