Hi again Robin,

You can tell this is a boring day here, I've written my intro
already, and if you could I'd like any past intros you have.
Thanks.

Hi everyone,
      My name's Karen, I'm 33, and I've loved S&H since it first
aired. I had no idea that fandoms existed at this level, let
alone ever heard of slash, till last year. I'd been a "fan" of
shows, like Trek and Dr Who, for a long time, but the whole world
of zines, fannish art and songtapes were unknown to me.

I've been a fickle fan, I usually get really involved in a
show and then after a while, move on to another. I still like
the old interests, just don't participate in them as much. I
can't say the same for S&H, I never lost that intense love for
the characters and the show from the time it left the air till
the time it came back on TNT. Needless to say, now that I've
discovered this fandom, I'm in heaven. The introduction to slash
soon after my introduction to zines just broadened my horizons.
I still read some gen, but get the most satisfaction from slash.
The best writers and stories are found there, and I like the
added aspect of the sexual relationship - implied or explicitly
portrayed. I'm not into some of the stuff, no offence to anyone
who likes violent rape stories, but they are not my cup of tea.
I prefer to think of S&H entering into that part of their
relationship mutually, not by force. I'll read a death story
once, but they are not my favs. I'm a big fan of the romantic
stories, but I also like a good bit of conflict. Humor is a fav
with me, I love a writer that can do S&H dialog that is really in
character. Some of the stuff I've read so far is just terrific,
I can't wait to talk about it with anybody's who's interested!

As far as other shows go, I've always been a big
relationship fan...besides Trek, Dr Who, and S&H, I love Miami
Vice, Wise Guy, The Avengers, Tour Of Duty, Moonlighting,
M*A*S*H, St Elsewhere and many others. X-Files is my current tv
fav. Like I said, give me my relationships!

I'm really glad I've gotten the chance to subscribe to this
list, I love to talk S/H to anybody who'll listen, and now I've
got a captive audience! <G>

Count me among those who was a tolerant gen-only fan that got
interested in slash mostly because of the constant anti-slash
rantings of her fannish friends. I had no idea what slash was
until one of them explained, rather reluctantly and with much
distaste, the general idea of slash. Also, like Audrey, I really
didn't start reading slash until I ran out of gen, but this was
not totally by choice. I didn't have any fannish friends who
were into slash at that point, and I was hanging out with a crowd
of intolerant gen fans - NOT a good point from which to try to
explore slash. When I was first introduced into fandom three
years ago, S&H slash fandom was still pretty much underground,
and if you didn't know somebody who was already "in", it was not
easy to get your foot in the door. I'm not accusing anyone and
can understand the caution, I'm just very pleased that new fans
are not having as hard a time finding S/H fanfic and fans as I
did. The 'net' has made things a lot easier for new fans to find
S&H - obvious thanks go out to many hard working *generous* fans
far too numerous to mention by name.

More pondering - unlike a lot of fans I've met, I had no ideas of
"sexual" slash between Starsky and Hutch when I first watched S&H
in the 70's - I was a very naive 13 year old at the time. All my
fantasies were of the Mary Sue variety, most of them with me in
Kristy McNicholish role. I usually ended up either helping S&H
or needing to be rescued by them, and there were scads of
scenarios with the guys in h/c situations. I had a *huge* crush
on Hutch at the time, but most of my "stories" were not of a
romantic variety. I have always been attracted to close male
partnerships - in movies, TV, books and real life - but guess I
wasn't ready for the actual sexual aspects of a m/m relationship
till I was older. Here's my questions: how many fans who were
old enough to see S&H when it ran in the 70's slashed them at the
time, and how old were you? For those who didn't, did anyone have
a "hell NO!" reaction when they first heard about slash? The
whole concept of fandom and slash fascinates me - I love to hear
other fans experiences!

Karen

P.S. - Welcome to all the new fans on VP!
