Hey guys,
Just a test message and a note to let you all know I'm now
on Veniceplace.

I write under the name Virginia Call, and most of you have
probably seen my ramblings on Z3. I'm a 34 year old housewife
with two young children who are *finally* in school, so I have my
life back. : )

Really like slash, but for myself, I do consider it AU, as I
don't see it happening in the series. But hey, love it anyway!
Can't have *too* much love, can we?! Plus, the thought of more
than one universe with the guys in it is just too much fun.

TTYL,
Virginia

Okay, better do it now, before I forget again!

I write under the name Virginia Call, I'm 36 years old, married
15 years at the end of this month to a guy a couple of years
younger than I am. I grabbed him while he was young, and can
honestly say that I am the first and last person my husband ever
dated. Computer nerds don't get out much. : ) I have two
children, a boy age 11 and a girl age 9. I'm a stay-at-home Mom
who is trapped for the summer with no transportation and two kids
who's sole purpose in life is to give me gray hair. For various
reasons, hubby doesn't know about slash, and he's pretty sure he
actually doesn't *want* to know what I read. He embarrasses
incredibly easy.

When "Starsky & Hutch" came on I was in eighth grade in Reno,
Nevada. (I actually lived on a part of that burning map at the
start of 'Bonanza'.) Didn't see the "Starsky & Hutch" pilot, but
got to see one of the eps. and fell in love. I've always been
pretty much into partnerships, which started with books like "The
Hardy Boys" and worked it's way up to "Sherlock Holmes". Since I
was/still am a voracious reader, I've always been pretty much a
loner. S&H was the first show I could really get into with a
group of friends! We'd talk about every episode until we were
blue in the face.

Moved a few times the next few years, and until TNT had it's
reruns, didn't realize there were four episodes I had never
actually seen! Now I can't remember which ones they were. My
other favorite shows are/were Star Trek, which I've lost interest
in it seems, The Sentinel, which I love dearly, Hardcastle and
McCormick while it was on, and I think "Alias Smith and Jones",
but I don't remember too much of it now. One of these days I'm
planning on reading "The Professionals" fanfic, and seeing what
that's all about when I get more time. And maybe I'll give Miami
Vice a try, since I never got to see much of that one either.
After spending three years in Japan, where I pretty much gave up
on the base library and started reading fiction in the "A"
section because I was getting desperate, I'm enjoying hoarding
the net fanfic even if I don't have the time right now. I'm gonna
*need* it some day!!

I've got various pages up right now, my main web page, the S&H
Character guide, my S&H Collectors Page, All my S&H dolls dressed
up in Action Jackson outfits, (It's one of those things, you just
had to be there. : ), The Sentinel Character Guide and my other
doll collection. I've written some Gen, which I've retired for
awhile, and some slash, (which is *hard work* BTW!) but haven't
had the energy or time this winter to do any writing. Got
massively stalled with RL and my son's school problems and found
my concentration shot all to hell.

Other than that, I'm a pretty boring person, I like to organize
things and am into Genealogy for a whole county in Missouri.
Which goes perfectly with the fact that I'm incredibly bad at
remembering names and spelling. Self torture. : )

Hey, guys!

< It's great to meet everyone and find out how they got into S&H,
but now
> it's time to dish the dirt. How did YOU get into slash?

I've always been drawn to partners, even when little. My first
love was the "Hardy Boys". I fell in love with Sherlock Holmes
and Dr. Watson, and followed that to tv with Adam 12, Emergency!,
Star Trek, S&H, etc. etc.

The slash came later when I was looking at Star Trek fanfic and
figured out what 'slash' meant. Decided I'd take a look and
liked a lot of the stories.

But I don't see every pair as a slash pair. In fact, there are
really only a few fandoms that I can see them that way, even if I
really enjoy the Gen.

>Why did it appeal to you?

I can only guess it was because, after all was said and done,
that I could see that the *love* was there and having sex
wouldn't have affected that basic, soul-deep attachment of two
people who've met their soul mates. And while most gen stories
are about the guys ~working~ together, on cases and such, the
slash stories have them delving very intimately into personal
issues and feelings.

Of course, the sex is great! : )

>How do you deal with it?

I share when I feel comfortable and read as much as I can.

>Are in the closet about it?

Yes. I'm sure hubby has a good clue, but he's *not* really
interested in knowing. (In fact, he shies away when I get close
to telling him just *exactly* what the X-rated material I read
*is*. He knows it's X-rated, he knows a lot of society wouldn't
like it, and he knows I've written some of it.)

It would make him uncomfortable, and knowing he was uncomfortable
would make me uncomfortable...

And, of course, if a 'mystery' story gets me all hot and
bothered, he's ecstatic! Why would he want to rock the boat? ;)

> What compels you to write it and read it? >>

I haven't felt compelled to write it, although I have, and am
much more comfortable with Gen. I think slash is *much* harder
then Gen when it comes to emotions, locations, dialog, etc. etc.
Then add in the sex scenes, and I find myself feeling totally out
of my element. : )

But I *love* reading it. What gets me the most are the 'tender'
moments between the guys. Even if they don't have sex in the
story, there is such freedom to express the love that the Gen
stories don't usually allow without a major 'hurt' aspect.

others.

Georgia wrote...
> > I also wrote to
> > her privately, letting her know that while *I* wasn't keen on
Freddy Kruger
> > and Jason, if she wanted to write about people slashing each
other to bits,
> > she had my full support and I didn't think she was a pervert.
>

And then Flamingo wrote...
> She was almost
> *relieved* when I explained, very embarrassed, what it really
did
> involve.
>

I really laughed when I read those, because the first thing I did
when trying to let my hubby know what I was getting into, was to
explain to him that slash wasn't about *that* kind of story.
Although he still doesn't know exactly what 'slash' is, other than
it is X-rated in most cases, I think he's pretty sure he doesn't
*want* to know. I think he has a good idea, it's just not
someplace *he* wants to go, so he doesn't want any details. But
as long as it encourages me to mature into a _dirty-old-broad_
he's all for it. : D

I have to say that I didn't see slash in S&H when it was on the
air, but I was awful close to it. I didn't discover slash until a
few years later, when I bought a K/S zine to see what it was all
about and found that it seemed like a natural thing for those two.
Didn't take much to go back to thinking about S&H. I felt then
that I had overlooked something pretty obvious! : )

For me, it has to start with the relationship. There has to be
*something* between the two to make me feel that those two
characters need each other. Being a slash fan hasn't stopped me
from being a gen fan too. If the emotions and commitment are
there, I don't need the sex to be satisfied with a good story.
Although, I *do* enjoy the sex. : )

There aren't many shows I follow this closely, enough to be a
'fan', although there may be quite a few shows I like. But I'm a
sucker for a good buddy show, as long as the 'chemistry is there
for me.
