Hmmmm. I'm totally unfamiliar with "Publisher '98" -- I have the

standard stuff, Word. I've tried every way of getting into the file I

know, including just saving it down to ASCII but still can't get into

it. You can send me the list to:

I'm sorry it's taken several days to get back to you, Judith, but this

has been the toughest week yet with my baby birds. One of them had a

heart problem and wouldn't recover and wouldn't get worse, so I ended up

staying all night with him for the last 4 nights. I don't even know

what day it is. Today he finally deterioriated and we were able to get

permission to put him out of his misery. It was terrible to see him

suffering. Now, I've got *another* difficult child to spend the night

with and with a 9 am dental appointment! I wonder if I can sleep

through it? ;-) I'm hoping, that with luck, I might get tomorrow off

(my first in 10 days). No guarentees. Days like this I'm feeling way

too old for this job!! But the healthy chicks are so beautiful and

strong it keeps you going.

I'm sorry you're going to have to go to the trouble! But thanks.

I'm still just learning, but having brand new, never before seen

pictures of Paul somehow inspired me to learn *very quickly*. I'm

making sure those battered slides are done by a professional! The

problems with the pictures were pretty simple. Believe me, I have

learned more computer stuff and new skills due to Starsky & Hutch than

any other hobby I've ever had!

These words were so touching, and yes, it breaks my heart to read them.

And yet, it is very interesting that you should say that to me. We

don't know each other Judith, so I hope I'm not imposing, but I would

like to share something with you and will presume you will keep my

confidence. I hope that's all right.

Besides my work with the whooping cranes, which is my full-time

occupation and has been for the last 15 years, I am also a professional

writer. Writers don't make lots of money usually, and so it is more

like an adjunct to my full-time job. I have 5 books now published by

major publishing houses (in collaboration with other authors), and one

of those is a movie tie-in, the novelization of the film Alien

Resurrection which was recently released. I've also worked on Star Trek

books and worked on original books. I also have several short stories

published, and on the non-fiction end, I've been involved in

co-authoring science papers at work, and have done extensive work on an

award-winning science book my department published a few years ago.

I've been writing fiction and non-fiction and have been published since

the 70's.

I'm telling you all this long-winded stuff in confidence, because I

normally keep my "fan" life very separate from my professional life.

Pro editors have a poor opinion of "fans" and it's better for me if the

two catagories don't mix. (Most of my best fan friends know about my

pro writing life, but I don't generally publicisize that much in the

fandom.)
