Hello VP neighbors! My name is Lisa and I'm new to the list,
though by no means new to S&H -- I fell for Starsky at the ripe
old age of 9 about halfway through the show's run and then,
proving that with age comes wisdom, I developed an appreciation
for Hutch while watching the show regularly for the first time as
an adult last summer (I can tell you exactly when it happened --
"Captain Dobey, You're Dead" and that black turtleneck! Yes,
indeedy!) I began seeking out fanfic on the web after TNT put the
show back on its schedule over the summer, devouring every bit I
could find, and I haven't looked back since! (This is where I
admit I wanted to join this list so I could bug Flamingo about
"Total Eclipse" on a regular basis! )

In my other life I'm married with an almost-two-year-old son and
a spoiled feline, living in the Deep South (i.e. snow-free!)
where I work as a copy editor.

Looking forward to chatting with my new neighbors! :D

Lisa

<< It's great to meet everyone and find out how they got into
S&H, but now it's time to dish the dirt. How did YOU get into
slash? Why did it appeal to you? How do you deal with it? Are
in the closet about it? What compels you to write it and read
it? >>

In the other fandoms in which I had been actively involved before
finding S&H fandom, I hardly ever read slash because it just
didn't seem all that believable (I mean, really, Mulder and
Skinner?!) and I wasn't looking to read it in S&H fanfic either.
But then one day I was sure I had read every gen story there was
to read online, and I needed some new reading material. I knew
there had to be some S/H somewhere on the web but the only name I
knew to look for was Alexis, so I did a websearch of her name and
found a link to the slash archive. I didn't know what to read
first, so I went with the two names I recognized from fandom --
Lovett and Flamingo. The pieces I read were terrific and I
realized that with all the love and caring we see between these
two men on the series, a sexual relationship could very easily be
the next logical step. So then I proceeded to read everything at
the archive and have been going broke buying slash zines.

I'm not choosy, though, I'll read gen and slash -- as long as the
relationship is there in spades in a story, I don't care which
category it falls under. The relationship is what drew me to the
show (incredible good looks of the two leads, aside, of course! )
in the first place and it's what I look for first and foremost in
fanfic. It just seems to be much more pronounced in slash.

And I am definitely in the closet when not online. (I actually
made a comment about S/H to my husband earlier tonight and he
asked incredulously, "You mean people actually write stories
about Starsky and Hutch with *each other*?!" I waited for him to
ask me if I'd ever read any of it, but he never did, so the
closet door remains safely closed for now...)

Lisa
