A Lament for Darkness
by Jenny Sand

Isn't it funny... that on such a beautiful, sunny day,
my thoughts will wander back and stray...
to a starless night
that seems so far away.

The warmth of the sun upon my face...
is forgotten for the chill of another place...

The sound of laughter and the smiles of the elves and my friends...
are lost in a memory of darkness that knows no end.
Blossom-scented air... bathes my weary face,
but can't erase the foul stench... that ruled that reeking place.

this place is free of evil,
and we need not fear—not as then,
when, ever watchful,
we felt the danger near.

And yet I yearn for that darkness,
that smell of fear and gloom.
Yes, I miss all the hardness...
that is Moria, is Khazad-dúm.

For in its darkness...
I could hold you tight,
could feel your warmth,
and sense your inner light.

For all Lorien's glory,
I shall find no rest here.

Never to hold you again...
That is all that I fear.
