I study her.

She is all at once my happiest dream and my most frightening
nightmare.

Does she know that? That with a single heartfelt smile she will have
me producing my own for days? That with another declaration of
loneliness I want to grab her by the shoulders and shake her until she
realises that it was her decision, her call?

Too late. She already knows. She excels at denial.

I should be disgusted, sympathetic, understanding, angry -- any of
these.

She smiles at me and...I am happy. Even though I am no longer the
person I was.
