The BLTS Archive- Montgomery's Shock: Nyota's Letter Sixth in the Edge of Forever series by S.R. Benjamin (phil@temples.com) --- This is for Maellen of Yiktor, who suggested it in the first place. --- Dear Scotty: I hope you get this before the transwarp testing. Leonard told me that he had heard from you, and he suggested that I write. He said very little, but implied more, in that subtle way of his. It was something about a misunderstanding with the Captain and Spock that had led you away from the Enterprise. I was so surprised, Scotty. Especially since I didn't hear from you at all once you left. And I have to say when you came down to my cabin drunk three weeks ago and tried to explain, I just couldn't understand. I can't imagine anything that the Captain and Spock would do that would make you leave us. At least, not with respect to running the ship. It had to be something else. Leonard as much as told me that. But Scotty, you already knew about them, didn't you? You only need to watch them together to know how they feel about each other. Remember the holiday party where you and I were in that dark corner near the replicators and we saw the Captain put his arm around Spock, who turned toward him and stroked a hand down the Captain's back? Maybe you were too busy holding me to notice all that, but it was there for anyone to see. Is that what you're making an issue of now? I don't want to spend my time guessing what your slurred "having to leave" and "can't work with that" meant when we met three weeks ago. I want you to tell me, by reply transmission. We have shared enough between us that at least you could show me the respect of a response. When I was growing up, my mother was adamant about communicating when there were disagreements in the family. Maybe not right away, but surely. Well, it's time for surely now. Don't forget how much I care about you, Scotty. I miss you. And I want to know what I can do for a dear friend who isn't here with me when he should be. Love, Nyota P.S. Leonard believed what you said about transwarp interference with communications. But you don't expect me to fall for that, do you? Just run the right Fourier transform when you transmit, Scotty, and I'll be right here to receive it. --- The End
