Lieutenant Thomas Eugene Paris stood happily in front of Captain Kathryn
Janeway, his hands layered between the strong sure hands of Ensign Harry
Kim, as he listened to the words that would bind him forever to Harry.
A broad grin appeared on his face as he caught Harry's radiant dark
brown eyes. I love you, he silently mouthed to Harry and a silly smile
lit up his face when Harry mouthed the same words to him.
With one last glance at Harry, Tom turned his attention back to Janeway.
"I now pronounce you married."
Tom thought his heart would burst with triumphant happiness at that
announcement. Words he had so longed to hear ever since he and Harry got
to get together. Yes, at last! He's mine! Harry's really mine
now! the jubilant words echoed in his heart. Tom turned towards Harry
and they moved into each other's arms. Their heads angled
instinctively in opposite directions and lips parted as they breathlessly
moved to take their first kiss as a married couple. But at the last second
before their lips met, they remembered that the ritual was not actually
finished. They paused and glanced expectantly at the captain.
Janeway quirked an eyebrow. "You may now kiss each other,"
she finished dryly.
Even before Janeway finished the sentence, Tom and Harry were already
clinging to each other, their mouths fastened in a hungry kiss, missing
the amused looks between Janeway and Chakotay.
Oh gods, I've kissed Harry so many times but this kiss. . . this
kiss somehow seems so different, Tom contemplated, then he berated
himself. You idiot! Stop analyzing the kiss and just enjoy it! He
pressed closer to Harry and deepened the kiss.
A discreet cough from the Captain penetrated Tom's lust-hazed mind.
Uh-oh. The wedding. We're still at the wedding, he thought and
reluctantly broke from the kiss. "Later," he promised Harry, his
arms still around his new husband. He and Harry smiled sheepishly at the
Captain and they good-naturedly accepted the teasing laughter that filled
the room.
"Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you our newest married couple -
Tom Paris and Harry Kim!"
Clapping and cheers erupted from the smiling guests - the loudest of
which came from B'Elanna.
"Let me be the first to congratulate you." Janeway stepped
forward and enveloped Tom in a bear hug. "Be happy, Tom," she
whispered huskily.
"Thank you, Captain," Tom grinned as he returned the hug and
impulsively kissed her on the cheek before releasing her.
"And you," Janeway embraced a beaming Harry.
"Congratulations, Harry."
"Thank you, Captain." An expression of yearning passed briefly
over his features. "I only wish that my parents were here to see me
get married," he said longingly.
Tom tightened his arm around Harry's waist and kissed him quickly on
the cheek to comfort him. He knew how much Harry missed his folks ever
since getting that letter from his parents.
"I know your parents would be here if they could." Janeway
patted Harry's hand reassuringly.
Harry nodded. "I know, Captain. They would be very happy for me too.
And once they get to know Tom, they'd love him as much as I do!"
His expression brightened. "But I wouldn't trade this moment for
anything! You guys are my family too. And now I have my Tom!" He
smiled happily at the pilot.
Janeway took Tom and Harry's hands. "We are
family," she said with conviction. "Never forget that. And
we're very delighted and honored that we're here to share this
moment with you."
Janeway addressed the guests and clapped her hands. "And, now, I
think it's time for Tom and Harry's first dance," she smiled
back at the couple and gestured towards the center of the room. At this
cue, the music started. With gazes locked, Tom put his arms around
Harry's waist and Harry wrapped his arms around Tom's neck.
"I love you, Tom," Harry whispered.
"I love you, Harry," Tom murmured softly and planted a kiss on
his beloved's forehead. Blue eyes closed as he savored the feeling of
Harry in his arms and the world seemed to disappear around them. At least
for a few minutes anyway. Tom started and his eyes flew open when a finger
tapped on his shoulder. He smiled as B'Elanna's voice piped up
behind him. "My turn for a dance with Harry. May I, Tom?"
The pilot nodded and handed Harry's hand to B'Elanna. He grinned
as Harry ordered the computer to play a faster-paced music and whirled
B'Elanna across the dance floor in a spirited waltz. An arm draped on
his shoulder and he turned to meet Janeway's eyes.
"Can I have this dance?"
"My pleasure, Captain." Tom led Janeway to the dance floor.
"They dance well together, don't they?" Tom commented
as he observed Harry and B'Elanna dancing.
"They're a perfect couple," Janeway remarked quite
seriously.
Tom nearly stumbled in shock at the captain's words. What in the hell
was she saying? This was his wedding day and she was saying that Harry
and B'Elanna made a perfect couple? "Captain?"
Confusion creased his forehead.
"It's Harry and B'Elanna's wedding day. And
you're their best man." Janeway looked at him strangely as if
there was something wrong with him.
With mounting dread, Tom's eyes frantically searched for Harry and
B'Elanna amid the crowd that had gathered on the dance floor. He
finally spotted them still dancing with each other and, to his horror,
reality seemed to shift as B'Elanna's dress uniform shimmered and
transformed into a traditional Klingon red wedding gown.
He looked down at his own body and his wedding outfit metamorphosed into
formal civilian clothes that was more of an appropriate outfit for the
best man position that Janeway said he was.
"No!" he cried, aghast. "This can't be
happening!" His heart slammed inside him as he saw Harry and
B'Elanna kissing passionately in response to the clinking of the glass
by Chakotay. Coldness gripped him and he started forward, stretching a
desperate hand towards Harry, ignoring the mystified look that Janeway
directed at him.
"Harry. . ." he choked out. All of a sudden, he was back in his
quarters, slumped in the sofa, a white-knuckled fist clutching a crumpled
invitation card. The embossed words from the card jumped out at him.
Harry Kim and B'Elanna Torres cordially invite you to their
wedding. . .
The rest of the words blurred as he closed his eyes in agony. Oh gods! It
had been just a dream. His wedding to Harry had been just a dream! Harry
was married to someone else and now it was too late for him. The
invitation card fell to the floor as he buried his head in his hands. All
sense of time fled and the next thing he felt was somebody insistently
shaking his shoulder.
"Tom? Tom, wake up! You're having a nightmare!"
Tom stirred. He blinked wearily and focused on Harry's worried face.
"Harry? What are you doing here?"
"Here? Why shouldn't I be here?" The ensign asked
perplexedly.
"You got married to B'Elanna. You're supposed to be with
her. . ." Tom's voice trailed off as he noted the incredulous
look on Harry's face. The truth suddenly came flooding back and, with
a relieved sob, he flung himself at a still very puzzled Harry.
Tom buried his face in Harry's neck. "Oh Harry!" he clung
to his husband as if he would never let him go. "I had this dream
that we didn't get married. That you married B'Elanna instead. I
went to your wedding. . ."
Harry rubbed Tom's back in a reassuring manner. "You're the
only one I wanted to marry." He felt little tremors running through
Tom's body. "Oh, Tom, you're shaking. Let me get you some
water. . ." he moved to get up but was stopped by Tom.
"No! Just stay and hold me, Harry. I just need to feel you near me.
Please?"
How could Harry refuse? He sat back down beside Tom and pulled him close.
He heard Tom sigh. "What is it, Tom?" he asked worriedly.
"It's so weird. That dream seemed so real." Tom wove his
fingers with Harry's, greatly reassured by the sparkling glint of gold
metal bands on both their fingers. Another deep sigh. "I guess I
still haven't totally gotten rid of my old fears of losing you."
Harry kissed Tom. "You don't need to be afraid of that, Tom.
I'll always be here for you. Didn't you know? You're stuck
with me forever," he teased.
Tom chuckled. "Love, I'll choose to be stuck with you any day,
any time." He kissed Harry a little harder. "Forever won't
be enough as far as I'm concerned," he said.
"I love you, Tom."
"I love you too, Harry."
"Come to bed." Harry stood up and reached a hand towards
Tom. "Maybe we can do something to help you forget that
dream," Harry suggested playfully.
Tom grinned. He caught Harry's hand and allowed himself to be pulled
to his feet. They exchanged more kisses as they walked to their bedroom.
Tom moaned with pleasure as Harry quickly disrobed him, hands roaming
where they pleased.
Slowly, the last images of his nightmare dimmed and receded with each
gentle touch, every burning kiss and every ardent caress from his husband.
This was real and Harry was really his! As Tom melted into
Harry's embrace, he knew without a doubt that someday very very soon,
those nightmares would no longer come to haunt him.
